Chapter 5

Mrs. Foster arrived unannounced on a Thursday afternoon. She had a key—Pierce gave it to her months ago, something I discovered only when she let herself in while I was nursing in the living room.

'Oh, don't mind me,' she said, setting her purse on the console table. 'I just wanted to see my grandson.'

I adjusted my nursing cover and smiled. 'Of course. He just ate, but he'll be up soon.'

She walked past me into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator like she owned it, and poured herself a glass of water. I watched her from the sofa. She was wearing cream slacks and a silk blouse, her hair freshly blown out. She looked like she was dressed for lunch at the club, not a spontaneous grandmother visit.

'You look tired, dear,' she said, turning to face me. Her tone was gentle. Concerned. The kind of concern that felt like a scalpel.

'I am tired,' I said. 'New mothers usually are.'

'Mmm.' She sipped her water. 'You know, when Pierce was a baby, I made sure to keep myself together. It's important. Men notice these things.'

I kept my expression neutral. 'I'm sure they do.'

She walked closer, set the glass on the coffee table. 'I'm only saying this because I care about you both. Pierce has been… restless lately. I can tell. A mother knows.' She sat in the chair across from me, crossed her legs. 'Marriage takes work, Jordan. Especially after a baby. You can't let yourself go.'

I looked down at my postpartum body, still soft in places, still healing. Then I looked back at her. 'I'll keep that in mind,' I said.

'Good.' She smiled. 'I knew you'd understand. You're a smart girl.' She stood, smoothed her slacks. 'I'll just peek in on the baby before I go.'

She walked toward the nursery. I waited until I heard the biometric lock deny her entry—three failed attempts, then silence—before I stood and followed.

Mrs. Foster was standing in the hallway, staring at the door. 'The lock isn't working,' she said.

'It's working fine,' I said. 'It's biometric now. My fingerprint only.'

She turned to look at me. Her smile was thinner. 'That seems… excessive.'

'I disagree,' I said. I opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it behind me without inviting her in.

I heard her leave ten minutes later.

That night, I made tea. Not for myself—for Mrs. Foster's next visit, whenever that would be. I set the tin on the counter where she'd see it. Chamomile. Honey. Routine.

Estelle arrived at nine PM on Saturday. Pierce was in Boston overnight, another conference. Diane Shaw came twenty minutes later, carrying a slim leather briefcase.

We sat in the library. I'd laid everything out on the desk—printed transcripts, USB drives labeled by date, the toxicology report in its sealed envelope, Marcus's financial breakdown in a bound folder. It looked like a prosecution exhibit. That's because it was.

Diane opened her briefcase and pulled out a legal pad. 'Walk me through the timeline one more time,' she said.

I did. She took notes. Estelle sat on the arm of the sofa, silent, watching.

When I finished, Diane set her pen down. 'The criminal charges are airtight,' she said. 'Embezzlement, assault with a controlled substance, conspiracy to commit fraud and kidnapping. The DA will take this. The evidence is overwhelming.'

'Good,' I said.

Estelle leaned forward. 'And I go live at eight PM on anniversary night. Wide angle on the living room. I'll frame it as a surprise celebration stream—my followers eat that stuff up. By the time things get interesting, we'll have fifty thousand live viewers minimum.'

'More than that,' I said. 'You'll have hundreds of thousands.'

Diane looked at me. 'You understand there's no walking this back. Once it's public, it's permanent.'

'I'm counting on permanent,' I said.

I opened my leather notebook. The last item on my list was written in my own handwriting: *Execute.* I drew a single line through it. The ink was black, deliberate.

Diane smiled. 'Then we're ready.'

Pierce came home Sunday night. I was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables for dinner. He dropped his bag by the door and walked over, kissed my cheek. 'I missed you,' he said.

'I missed you too,' I said. I kept chopping. 'I've been thinking about our anniversary.'

He paused. 'Yeah?'

'I want to do something here. At home. Small. Intimate. Just family and a few close friends.' I looked up at him. 'Nothing big. I'm not ready for that yet.'

Relief washed over his face. He'd probably been dreading some public event, some restaurant where he'd have to perform for hours. 'That sounds perfect,' he said. 'Really perfect.'

'I'll handle everything,' I said. 'You just show up.'

He kissed me again, longer this time. 'You're amazing,' he said.

I smiled. 'I know.'

The next morning, he ordered flowers. Peonies, my favorite. He made reservations at a wine shop for a private tasting, then canceled them, saying he wanted to be fully present at home. He was so relieved, so grateful, so utterly convinced that I was the same trusting woman he'd been drugging for months.

I watched him arrange the celebration of his own destruction and said absolutely nothing.

---

On Tuesday afternoon, I sat in my office with my phone. I opened the cloned messaging app—Pierce's number, mirrored perfectly. I typed carefully:

*Change of plans. Come to the penthouse early on anniversary night. 7 PM. Wait in the guest bedroom. Don't let Jordan see you. This is the next phase. Trust me.*

I hit send.

Naya's reply came four minutes later: *I'll be there.*

I deleted the app. Wiped the phone. Then I walked into the nursery, picked up my son, and held him close.

'It's almost over,' I whispered.

He yawned, tiny and perfect, and fell asleep against my chest.
