Chapter 3

I started pouring the tea down the sink on a Tuesday.

Pierce made it the same way every night. Chamomile, honey, a splash of milk. He'd bring it to wherever I was sitting—the nursery rocker, the living room sofa, the bed—and set it on the side table with a kiss to my temple. 'Drink up,' he'd say. 'You need your rest.'

The first night I dumped it, my hands shook so badly I had to grip the sink edge. I ran the water, watched the pale liquid swirl down the drain, then rinsed the mug and left it on my nightstand like I always did. Empty. Evidence of a ritual completed.

I got into bed and waited.

Pierce came in twenty minutes later, glanced at the mug, smiled. 'Good girl,' he murmured. He thought I was already asleep. I kept my breathing slow and even, the way I'd practiced in the mirror that afternoon. My son was in the nursery with Maria. The baby monitor sat on the nightstand, volume low.

Pierce kissed my forehead and left the room. I heard his office door close. Then nothing.

I stayed still for two hours. My back ached. My breasts were full and uncomfortable. I didn't move.

At 1:47 AM, I heard the front door unlock. Not the deadbolt—the smart lock, the quiet mechanical click of an authorized entry. Footsteps in the foyer. Two sets. One heavy, one lighter. Heels on hardwood.

Whispered laughter.

I didn't open my eyes. I tracked the sounds. They moved past the living room, past the kitchen, toward the guest bedroom at the end of the hall. A door closed softly. The lock turned.

I lay there in the dark and cataloged everything. The time. The sound of Naya's voice—I recognized it now, that low, satisfied laugh. The creak of the guest bed frame through the wall. I made myself listen. I made myself remember.

They left at 4:32 AM. I heard them in the kitchen first—the refrigerator opening, glasses clinking, more laughter. Then the front door again. Silence.

Pierce came back to bed at 4:50 AM. He slid under the covers, careful not to wake me. His hand rested briefly on my hip. I kept my breathing steady.

In the morning, he kissed me awake like nothing had happened. 'How'd you sleep?' he asked.

'Like the dead,' I said.

I did it two more times. Poured the tea, feigned sleep, listened. The third night, I heard them in the kitchen before they went to the guest room. Naya's voice was clearer this time, unguarded. 'When's your anniversary?' she asked.

'Two months,' Pierce said. 'Why?'

'Just thinking about timing.' A pause. 'My due date's three weeks after that.'

'Perfect,' Pierce said. There was a smile in his voice. 'We'll have everything in place by then.'

I added it to the list in my head. Dates. Times. Quotes. I didn't write anything down. I didn't need to.

On Thursday morning, I called Marcus Hale. He'd been White Industries' CFO since before I was born, one of my father's oldest friends. I trusted him the way I trusted my own instincts.

'I need a favor,' I said. 'A quiet one.'

'Name it,' Marcus said.

I framed it as routine. An internal audit of discretionary accounts, standard procedure for post-acquisition integration. Nothing alarming. Nothing that would trigger alerts. Marcus was too sharp to ask unnecessary questions. 'I'll have preliminary findings in two weeks,' he said.

He called me back in ten days.

'You need to see this in person,' he said. His voice was careful, controlled. That's how I knew it was bad.

We met at his office downtown, not at White Industries. He handed me a folder. Inside were account statements, wire transfer records, vendor invoices. Fourteen months of transactions. Shell companies. Offshore routing. A corporate card in Pierce's name. An LLC registered to Naya Kelley.

'One point four million,' Marcus said quietly. 'That's what I can confirm so far. There may be more.'

I looked at the numbers. They blurred slightly. I blinked and they sharpened again. 'Can you prove intent?' I asked.

'Without question,' Marcus said. 'The pattern's too clean. This wasn't sloppy. It was deliberate.'

I closed the folder. 'Keep digging,' I said. 'I need everything.'

The toxicology panel was easier. I scheduled it as routine postpartum bloodwork, something my doctor recommended during my six-week checkup. I used a private lab in Midtown, one with no hospital affiliations, no ties to Pierce's network. I paid cash.

The results came back in five days. Sustained exposure to a prescription benzodiazepine—consistent with nightly administration in liquid form over a period of at least eight weeks. The levels weren't dangerous, but they were deliberate. Calculated. Enough to keep me under without raising suspicion.

I read the report twice. Then I sealed it in an envelope and added it to the locked drawer in my home office, next to the encrypted drive with the surveillance footage and Marcus's financial forensics.

That night, Pierce made my tea again. Chamomile, honey, milk. He set it on the nightstand and kissed my temple. 'Drink up,' he said.

I waited until he left the room. Then I poured it down the sink, rinsed the mug, and went to check on my son.

He was sleeping peacefully, one tiny fist curled near his cheek. I stood there for a long time, watching him breathe. Then I went back to my office and opened the locked drawer.

I had everything I needed now. Almost.

I just needed the right moment.
