Chapter 2

I waited until Pierce left for his morning run. He kissed my forehead on his way out, the same gesture he'd done every morning for three years. 'Back in an hour,' he said. The door clicked shut.

I was already at my laptop.

The nanny-cam system had been Pierce's idea, actually. 'For the baby's safety,' he'd said when our son was born. Cameras in the nursery, the hallway, discreet angles in the living room and kitchen. I'd agreed immediately—what new mother wouldn't want that security? What I hadn't mentioned was that I'd expanded the system myself, adding administrative access through my White Industries credentials. The penthouse was technically corporate property. Every camera fed through servers I controlled.

I pulled up the interface and started with Pierce's office at White Industries. My hands were steady as I entered the date range: the last thirty days. The footage loaded in thumbnail grids—empty offices, late-night cleaning crews, Pierce working alone at his desk.

Then, at 9:47 PM on a Tuesday two weeks ago, Naya Kelley entered his office. She closed the door behind her. I watched her walk to his desk. Pierce stood. They spoke for eleven seconds—I couldn't hear the audio yet, but I could read the body language. Then he kissed her.

I didn't look away. I made myself watch the entire seven-minute sequence. When it ended, I scrolled forward. There were two more instances within the same week. Different days. Same pattern. The third time, Naya sat on the edge of his desk while he stood between her knees, his hands in her hair.

I exported all three files to an encrypted drive. Then I switched to the penthouse cameras.

The bedroom footage was date-stamped from nine days ago. I remembered that night—Pierce had texted that he was staying late for a board prep session. I'd taken an Ambien around ten because I'd been having trouble sleeping. The baby had been restless.

The timestamp read 1:32 AM. The camera angle captured most of the bed. Pierce entered the frame first, then Naya. They were laughing softly, her hand on his chest. I watched them undress. I watched them get into my bed. I watched what happened next.

My throat felt tight, but I didn't cry. I just kept watching. At one point, Pierce glanced toward the hallway—toward the guest room where I'd been sleeping that week because the baby's bassinet was there and I didn't want to wake Pierce with the night feedings. That's what I'd told him. That's what he'd encouraged.

'She won't hear anything,' Pierce said on the footage. His voice was clear enough through the audio feed. 'She took something.'

Naya laughed. It was a low, satisfied sound. 'You're sure?'

'I'm sure.'

I saved the file. My hands were shaking now, but only slightly. I forced myself to breathe slowly, the way I did during board meetings when someone challenged my authority. Evidence first. Reaction later.

I scrolled further back, checking other nights when Pierce claimed to be working late. There were four more entries. Four more nights when Naya had been in my home, in my bed, while I was somewhere else in the apartment. On two of those nights, the footage showed Pierce walking down the hallway first, pausing outside the guest room door. Listening. Then returning to the master bedroom where Naya waited.

I exported everything.

Then I opened the kitchen camera feed. The nanny-cam there was positioned to monitor the baby's bottles and formula prep area—a safety measure Maria had suggested. The angle was wide enough to capture the breakfast bar and part of the counter.

I found it at 1:15 AM, six days ago. Pierce and Naya were standing by the counter. She was wearing one of my robes—the silk one I kept on the back of the bathroom door. He was pouring something from a small brown prescription bottle into a mug. My mug. The one with the chipped handle that I used every night for chamomile tea.

'She won't wake up,' Pierce said. His voice was casual, almost bored. 'She never does.'

Naya leaned against the counter, watching him stir. 'Double-check the dosage,' she said. 'We can't have her remembering anything.'

Pierce held up the bottle, reading the label. 'Two milligrams. Same as always. Enough to keep her under for six hours.'

'Good,' Naya said. She touched his arm. 'We're so close now. Once the baby comes, we just need to wait for the right moment.'

'I know.' Pierce set the mug aside to cool. 'Jordan trusts me. She always has.'

The footage continued for another thirty seconds—Naya kissing him, Pierce checking his watch, both of them leaving the kitchen. The mug sat on the counter, steam rising from the surface.

I sat in front of my laptop for four minutes. I know because I watched the timestamp in the corner of the screen. Four minutes where I didn't move, didn't blink, didn't breathe properly.

Then I closed the laptop and walked to the nursery. My son was asleep in his bassinet, one tiny fist curled near his cheek. I stood there, looking at him, until I heard Pierce's key in the front door.

'Honey?' he called. 'I'm back. How's my boy?'

I picked up my son, held him close, and walked out to meet my husband. 'He's perfect,' I said. My voice didn't shake. 'We're both perfect.'

Pierce smiled and kissed my forehead again. 'Good,' he said. 'That's all I want.'
