Chapter 1

"Natalie Hart? We're running about twenty minutes behind."

The nurse at the front desk of Beacon Hill Women's Surgical Center smiled at me like I was here for a teeth cleaning.

"That's fine," I said.

"Your husband's not with you today?"

"Grant had a client meeting. He'll pick me up."

She nodded and slid a clipboard across the counter. "Last two pages. Consent for bilateral tubal ligation. Sign where it's flagged, and bring it back when we call you."

I took it. The pen felt heavier than it should have.

Permanent. Irreversible. Not intended to be undone.

I'd read those words a dozen times this week. Every time, Grant had kissed my temple and said the same thing.

"You almost died with the twins, Nat. I'm not watching you go through that again. Two kids is enough. You're enough."

He made it sound like love. Maybe it was.

I signed the first page. Then I pulled out my phone, because my hands needed something to do besides shake.

My feed served me a post from an anonymous forum. It had forty thousand upvotes.

*Eight years. That's how long it took me to take everything my best friend ever had.*

I almost scrolled past. I didn't.

*We met when we were ten. She had the perfect dad, the perfect grades, the perfect life. I had nothing. So I decided I'd have hers.*

*First, her father. He funds my business now. She thinks he's just being generous to her oldest friend.*

*Then her career. Who do you think whispered in her boss's ear before she got "restructured"?*

*Then her husband.*

The comments were a circus.

*"This is fake lol."*

*"Proof or it didn't happen."*

The poster had answered.

*Proof? Fine. Here's my favorite part. She has twins. Boy and girl, six years old. She went through IVF. She thinks they're hers. They're not. The clinic used my eggs. Her husband arranged it. She carried MY babies for nine months and nearly bled out doing it.*

I laughed.

Out loud, in a waiting room full of quiet women. One of them glanced up at me. I covered my mouth and kept laughing, because it was insane. It was a stranger's cruel little story.

Then I scrolled to the photo.

A man's bare back on white sheets. Face turned away. On his left shoulder, a birthmark shaped like a crescent moon.

I stopped laughing.

I knew that birthmark. I'd traced it with my finger on our honeymoon in Maine. I'd joked that he'd been kissed by the moon.

On the nightstand beside him sat a small glass sculpture. Two swans, necks curved into a heart. I'd bought it for our tenth anniversary. It lived on Grant's side of our bed.

My bed.

I zoomed in. My thumb slipped on the screen because my skin had gone cold and damp.

The poster's username was *b.sloane.wins.*

Brielle Sloane. My maid of honor. The twins' godmother. The woman who'd held my hand through every IVF appointment and cried harder than I did when the first scan came back with two heartbeats.

Of course she cried. They were hers.

There was one more comment from her. Posted forty minutes ago.

*Update: she's getting her tubes tied TODAY. His idea. Once that's done, she'll never have a child that's actually hers. Not ever. I almost feel bad. Almost.*

"Natalie? Natalie Hart?"

I jerked my head up. A different nurse stood at the door to the prep area. Older, kind eyes, name badge reading *Denise.*

"We're ready for you, hon. Did you finish the paperwork?"

I stared at the clipboard in my lap. My signature sat on page one in neat blue ink.

"Ma'am?"

I stood. My knees almost didn't hold.

"I'm not doing it."

Denise blinked. "I'm sorry?"

I tore the consent form off the clipboard. Both pages. Then I ripped them in half, and in half again, and the sound was loud and ugly in that soft beige room.

"I'm withdrawing consent. For the procedure. All of it."

"Okay." Her voice gentled, the way you'd talk to a spooked horse. "That's absolutely your right. Can I ask if something happened? Are you feeling pressured?"

That word landed like a slap.

"Yes," I said. "I think I've been pressured for a very long time."

She studied my face. Then she nodded once. "Let's go somewhere private."

"No. I need something first." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I want it written in my chart. That I came in, that I refused, and that it was my decision. Today's date. The time."

"We can do that."

"And if anyone calls asking about me—including my husband—"

"We don't release information without your authorization. I promise."

"Good."

She led me to a small consult room and left me with a cup of water I didn't touch.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to drive straight to Grant's office and throw the swan sculpture through his window.

Instead, I opened my phone.

Screenshot. The post. Screenshot. The photo. Screenshot. Every comment, every timestamp. I opened the forum on my browser too, saved the page, and emailed everything to an old college account Grant had never known about.

My hands stopped shaking somewhere around the thirtieth screenshot.

Then I called my husband.

He answered on the second ring. Audio only.

"Nat? Hey, baby. Is it done?"

His voice was fast. A little breathless. I heard a door shut in the background.

"Where are you?" I asked.

"Office. I stepped out of the meeting. I've been worried sick. How do you feel?"

Worried sick. Forty minutes ago, his mistress had been bragging about my surgery to forty thousand strangers.

"Can you turn your camera on? I want to see you."

A pause. Just a beat too long.

"Signal's terrible in this stairwell. Tell me how it went."

I closed my eyes.

Six years of IVF bills he insisted on handling. The clinic he picked. The doctor he'd known "through a friend." Brielle in every waiting room. Grant in every conversation about how hard it all was on me, how I should rest, how I shouldn't worry about the details.

I'd been so grateful. I had thanked him.

"Nat? You still there?"

"I'm here."

"You didn't chicken out, did you?" A soft laugh, the one he used when he wanted me to feel silly. "I know it's scary. But we've got Leo and Ava. We have our family. You don't need to put yourself through anything else."

*Our family.*

Something inside me went very quiet. Not broken. Just still, like water before it freezes.

Every time I'd swallowed a doubt, he'd used it. Every time I'd said *you know best*, he'd taken another piece.

"Natalie?"

"Everything went fine," I said. "It's done."

His exhale was pure relief. He didn't even try to hide it.

"Thank God. I'm so proud of you, baby. Go home and rest. I'll bring dinner."

"Bring Thai," I said. "Brielle likes Thai. Maybe invite her."

Silence.

"Brielle?"

"She's been so supportive. I want to thank her."

"Sure," he said. Too fast. "Yeah. I'll text her."

"Love you, Grant."

"Love you too."

I hung up first.

Denise poked her head in. "Your chart's updated. You okay to drive?"

"I'm fine."

She didn't believe me. She let me go anyway.

In the parking garage, I sat behind the wheel of my car and looked at my own eyes in the rearview mirror. They were dry. That scared me more than tears would have.

Home was twelve minutes away. The house I'd decorated. The kitchen where Brielle drank my wine. The bedroom where she'd posed my husband next to my anniversary gift.

I started the engine.

I wasn't going to scream at him tonight. A scream would give him a chance to cry, to lie, to call Brielle and get their story straight.

No. I wanted them comfortable. I wanted them certain I was broken and sealed and harmless.

Then I wanted them to watch every lie come down at once.

My phone buzzed on the passenger seat.

A text. From Brielle.

*Heard you were a champ today, babe!! Grant says Thai tonight? Can't wait to see you. 💕*

I smiled, and typed back.

*Can't wait to see you too.*
