Chapter 2

I heard Brielle's laugh before I even got my key out of the lock.

It floated out of the living room, bright and tinny through a tablet speaker.

"Show me again, Maisie! Show me how you hold the reins!"

I stepped inside. My twins sat cross-legged on the rug, heads pressed together over the screen. Evan held the tablet. Maisie had her fists raised in front of her, pretending to steer an invisible horse.

"Like this, Aunt Bri! Like this!"

"Perfect, sweetheart. You're a natural."

The door clicked shut behind me.

Both kids turned. Two pairs of eyes, the same shade of hazel I'd always told myself came from Grant's side.

"Hi, Mom," Evan said.

"Hi, Mom," Maisie echoed.

Polite. Like greeting a teacher in the hallway.

Then they spun back to the screen.

"Aunt Bri, are you coming Saturday? To riding?"

"Please, please, please?"

"Wouldn't miss it, my little cowboys." Brielle's face filled the tablet, glossy lips curved. Her eyes found me over Evan's shoulder. "Oh! Hey, Nat. Feeling okay, babe? Big day."

"Big day," I agreed.

"Rest up. I'll let you have your mommy time."

She blew the kids a kiss. They both caught it and pressed it to their cheeks.

I'd never taught them that.

For six years, I'd stood exactly where I stood now, watching my children light up for someone else. I'd blamed myself. I worked too much. I wasn't fun. I was the one who said *bedtime* and *vegetables* and *no.*

But now I counted.

The weekend I'd booked the cabin on the Cape, just me and the kids, Grant had invited Brielle "so you'd have help." The first time I tried bath time alone, Grant called her over because Maisie wouldn't stop crying. Maisie had stopped the second Brielle picked her up. She'd been three months old.

I'd called it a gift. *She's so good with them.*

"Nat. You're home."

Grant came down the stairs. His hair was damp and combed back. His collar sat crooked, one side tucked under, like he'd dressed fast.

He was supposed to have been at the office until five.

"You showered," I said.

"Long day. I wanted to be fresh for you." He crossed the room and kissed my forehead. He smelled like our soap and something sweeter underneath. "Kids, Rosa's taking you out to the garden. Go find your boots."

They scrambled off without a backward glance. The nanny met them at the patio door.

Grant reached behind him and pulled out a white box with a blue ribbon.

"I got you something. For recovery."

He held it out. I didn't take it.

The box was labeled POST-PROCEDURE RECOVERY SUPPORT in English. But there was no Supplement Facts panel, no manufacturer listed, and no dosing instructions. One edge of the cardboard was slightly puffed, the glue line too thick, like somebody had opened it and sealed it shut again.

My stomach rolled.

Brielle's post. Third update, buried in the comments. *Got her a little something special for after. A gift that keeps on giving.* Forty-two people had replied with laughing faces.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Supplements. Iron, vitamins, that kind of thing. A doctor friend recommended it."

"Which friend?"

His smile stayed fixed, but his jaw tightened under it. "Does it matter? Nat, I drove across town for this."

"I'm just asking."

"You're always *just asking.*" He set the box on the side table harder than necessary. "Do you know what I juggle for this family? The firm, the bills, your father. I took the whole day to worry about you, and you're looking at me like I'm handing you poison."

I said nothing.

He softened his voice. That was always the next move.

"Baby. You signed the papers. You trusted me with the biggest decision of your life." He stepped in close and slid his hands to my waist. "Don't start keeping walls up now. Not after today."

His thumbs pressed under my shirt. His mouth found my neck.

I went rigid.

Then I flinched and hissed, one hand flying to my stomach.

"Grant—stitches."

He jerked back. "Shit. Sorry. I forgot."

"It's fine. I'm just sore."

"Of course. Of course you are." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm an idiot."

"You're thoughtful," I said, and picked up the box. "I'll take these after I eat something."

Relief smoothed his face. "That's my girl. Oh, Bri can't make it tonight. Something with a client."

"Too bad."

Upstairs in the bathroom, I locked the door and photographed the box. Every side. The resealed edge. The missing product information. I sent the pictures to Dr. Patel, my old OB, and to the attorney whose number I'd found in the parking garage.

*Please identify contents. Do not discuss with my husband.*

Then I dropped the box into the cabinet under the sink, behind the spare towels.

I opened the forum again. Brielle had been busy.

*Hart family dinner tomorrow. Daddy's big 65th. Guess who's sitting at the head table? 😘 And after that, a little present arrives that will change that whole family forever.*

Below it, someone asked, *What present?*

She'd answered with a single emoji. A crown.

My phone buzzed. The family text thread. Fourteen new messages.

Grant had posted an hour ago.

*Natalie's procedure went well. She might be emotional the next few days. Hormones, the doctor says. Please be patient with her. I'm doing my best to keep her calm.*

Aunt Carol: *You're a saint, Grant.*

Cousin Danny: *Hang in there, man.*

My father: *Proud of you, son.*

Son.

The phone rang before I could put it down. *Dad.*

"Natalie." No hello. Richard Hart never wasted words on hello. "Grant tells me you were short with him today."

"Did he."

"After everything that man does for you. He handles your finances, he raised those kids with you while you were chasing promotions, and you snap at him over a gift?"

"It wasn't over a gift."

"Then what was it over?"

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

*Your goddaughter is sleeping with my husband. My children aren't mine. And your business partner of six years planned all of it.*

He'd call it hormones. He'd call Grant.

"Nothing, Dad."

"Good." He exhaled, satisfied. "Tomorrow, seven sharp. The Lennox ballroom. Brielle's helped plan the whole evening, so try to look grateful."

"I'll be there."

"And Natalie? Smile for the photographers. I don't want people saying my daughter looks miserable at my birthday."

He hung up.

I sat on the edge of the tub and laughed. Quietly. It came out wet and wrong.

Because some stupid, stubborn part of me still wanted to believe him. That he wasn't cruel. That he'd just been fed the same sweet lies for so long he couldn't taste anything else. That if I showed him the truth, he'd look at me the way he used to when I was eight and had a fever and he sat by my bed all night.

I wiped my face. Then I got to work.

The forum. The photo. The supplement pictures. Call logs with times. Grant's message to the family. Brielle's texts going back three years. I sorted them into folders and uploaded them twice.

At nine, the attorney called back. Her name was Joanna Kessler. Her voice was dry and quick.

"You said fertility fraud?"

"And marriage fraud. Maybe financial too. My father's money runs through my husband's firm."

"Don't confront anyone. Don't delete anything. Don't eat anything he hands you."

"Already ahead of you."

"Good. Then we'll get along fine."

Grant came to bed at eleven. I kept my eyes shut and my breathing slow.

At midnight, the mattress shifted. His phone screen glowed against the ceiling. He slipped out, and the door eased almost closed behind him.

Not all the way.

"Hey," he whispered from the hall. "She's out cold."

A pause. A soft laugh.

"I know. I know, Bri. Just one more night."

I curled my fingers into the sheet.

"After tomorrow, it's done. Once your gift lands at that party, Richard won't have a choice." His voice dropped lower, warm in a way it hadn't been with me for years. "The whole Hart family. Everything. It'll be ours."

Tears slid sideways into my pillow. I didn't make a sound.

For six years, I'd asked myself if I was crazy.

Now I knew I wasn't.

And tomorrow, at my father's birthday, Brielle was planning to hand him something that would end me.

I just had to find out what it was before she did.
