My Husband Took His Best Friend on Our Honeymoon

9.8 / 10.0
London is only two hours away, yet the honeymoon we spent half a year perfecting—down to the silk nightgowns—now feels like a cruel joke. Bryan strolls in, phone in hand, casually announcing Halle is joining us; her breakup trumps our vows. Every packed dream turns to ash as he chooses her comfort over our love, forcing me to confront a devastating truth.

My Husband Took His Best Friend on Our Honeymoon Chapter 1

I zipped my suitcase shut with a sharp tug. We were leaving for London in two hours. It was our honeymoon, the trip Bryan and I had planned for six months. I had packed my nicest dresses and two silk nightgowns. My chest felt light and full of excitement.

Then Bryan walked into our bedroom, checking his phone.

"Hey," he said casually, not looking up. "Halle is coming with us."

I froze with my hand on the zipper. "What?"

"Halle," he repeated, finally looking at me. "She’s having a really rough time with her breakup. She needs a break. So I told her to come along. She already booked her ticket on our flight."

Blood rushed to my ears. "Bryan, it's our honeymoon. Our honeymoon. You invited your friend on our honeymoon?"

Bryan sighed. He made that familiar clicking sound with his tongue, the one that meant I was being unreasonable.

"You're overthinking this, Saylor," he said. His voice was smooth and dismissive. "She’s my best friend. Nothing more. Why do you always have to make everything so dramatic? Why are you so insecure?"

"Insecure?" I stared at him, my throat tight. "Wanting my husband to myself for one week is insecure?"

"She has nobody right now," he snapped. "If you can't show a little empathy, that's on you. I'm not uninviting her."

He grabbed his duffel bag and walked out. I stood by the bed, my chest burning. My thumb found my left hand, twisting my wedding band around and around until the skin beneath the gold was pinched and raw. I said nothing else.

The flight across the Atlantic was a quiet nightmare.

Bryan traded seats with an older man so he could sit next to Halle. I sat across the aisle by myself. For seven hours, I watched them share a pair of white earbuds. Halle leaned her head close to his shoulder, whispering and pointing at a movie screen. They laughed at private jokes, their knees touching under the shared blanket. Bryan didn't look across the aisle at me once. Not when the drinks came. Not when the lights dimmed.

When we landed at Heathrow, the airport was loud and freezing. We walked down to baggage claim in the gray morning light. Halle immediately linked her arm through Bryan’s elbow.

"Bry, I need coffee or I will die," she whined softly, tilting her head up at him. "Let’s go find that flat white place near the exit."

"Sure," Bryan said with a soft smile. "Come on."

He walked off with her. He didn't tell me where they were going. He didn't ask if I wanted anything. He just left me standing by the luggage belt.

I waited alone. Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. The carousel groaned and spat out heavy bags. Finally, my floral suitcase tumbled onto the rubber slats. I dragged it off by myself, nearly losing my balance.

I hauled it through customs and pushed through the sliding glass doors into the main arrivals hall.

I scanned the sea of drivers holding paper signs. I checked the coffee shop. I looked near the underground entrance.

They weren't there.

I pulled out my phone with trembling hands. No missed calls. No text messages. Nothing from Bryan.

I dialed his number. It rang four times, then went straight to voicemail.

They had taken a cab and left me. Left his brand-new wife alone in a foreign airport without a word.

A sharp, hot tear slipped down my cheek. I wiped it away with the back of my hand. The handle of my suitcase shook violently in my grip. I stood frozen in the middle of the terminal, surrounded by rushing strangers.

Suddenly, the sadness in my chest snapped. It didn't break me; it turned into cold, hard anger.

*He wants a best friend? Fine.*

I unlocked my phone and scrolled past Bryan's name. Down, down to a contact I hadn't opened in four years: Liam Evans.

Liam had been my best friend since we were seven years old. He lived two doors down from me growing up, bandaged my scraped knees, and carried my backpack. But when I started dating Bryan, Liam took a job in London and disappeared. We hadn't talked since my wedding invitation went out.

I pressed call before my courage gave out.

It rang once. Twice.

"Saylor?"

His voice came through the receiver, deep, steady, and utterly familiar.

My voice cracked instantly. "Liam..."

"What's wrong?" The warmth in his tone vanished, replaced by an edge like steel. "Where are you?"

My pride fell to pieces on the airport floor. "I’m at Heathrow. Bryan... he brought Halle. And they left me here. Liam, I need help. Can you come? Can you pretend to be my guy best friend? I want to play his game. Just... please."

There was a half-second of silence.

"I'm already in London, Say," Liam replied quietly. "Send me your terminal. Don't move."

Twenty minutes later, the airport traffic parted outside the glass doors.

A long, gleaming black Bentley pulled up to the curb. It stopped right in front of me, sleek and imposing.

The door opened. A man stepped out into the damp London air.

My breath hitched.

Liam had grown into someone breathtaking. He was taller than I remembered, his shoulders broad under a tailored charcoal wool coat. His dark hair was combed back, his jawline sharp and clean. He walked with a quiet, dangerous authority that made nearby travelers glance his way.

He didn't say a word. He walked straight toward me, his dark eyes locked on mine.

He reached down and wrapped his large, warm hand over mine on the suitcase handle. Gently, he peeled my frozen fingers away and took the bag.

"You're freezing," he said softly.

He opened the heavy passenger door for me. The interior smelled of rich leather and cedar. Heat washed over my face.

I slid into the seat. Liam loaded the trunk and slid behind the wheel, closing the door on the cold outside noise.

As the Bentley pulled away from the curb and merged into the London morning, the tight, suffocating knot that had lived in my chest for months suddenly loosened.

For the first time in a very long time, I could breathe.
