Chapter 3

Bria's building had a broken buzzer on the third floor. I knew this because I'd visited enough times to have memorized the workaround—two short rings, wait, one long. She was at the door before I finished the sequence.

She looked at me. Two suitcases. Coat wrinkled. The particular stillness on my face that I knew, from mirrors, looked like calm but wasn't.

She stepped back and held the door open.

"Spare room's made up," she said. "Coffee's black."

That was all. No *I told you so.* No *oh my God, Margot.* Just the door, and the light from the kitchen, and the smell of coffee already brewed like she'd been expecting me even before I called.

I set my bags down in the hallway and followed her in.

Her apartment was small and overfull in the way that meant someone actually lived there—books stacked sideways on top of other books, a red coat thrown over the desk chair, half a dozen mugs on the counter in various states of use. The whiteboard on the living room wall was already uncapped. She'd written my name at the top in blue marker. Just *Margot.* Underlined twice.

She handed me coffee. I wrapped both hands around the mug.

"Okay," she said, uncapping the marker again. "What do we know, and what do we need."

Not a question. A starting point.

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the fellowship letter. I set it on the coffee table between us.

She read it without touching it, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees. I watched her jaw tighten when she got to the Hoffman letterhead. She read Valentina's six words twice. Then she sat back.

"Three years," she said.

"Three years."

She picked up the marker. She wrote on the board for a long time without speaking. When she turned around, she'd built a grid. Evidence. Contacts. Timeline. Exposure strategy. It looked like the kind of thing that should have taken a week. She'd done it in twenty minutes.

"First thing tomorrow," she said, "you call Tucker."

---

Professor Tucker's office at Columbia smelled like old paper and the particular kind of quiet that belongs to rooms where serious work has always been done. The same framed anatomical diagrams I remembered from my second year. The same view of the courtyard, bare now in the early March cold. He was at his desk when I knocked, reading something over his glasses, and he looked up with the expression of a man who had been expecting this meeting even though I'd only called that morning.

I sat down across from him.

I placed the fellowship letter on his desk.

He looked at it for a moment without picking it up—at the embossed insignia, at the date, at my name. Then he lifted it, unfolded it carefully, and read. I watched his face. He was a man who had spent forty years in operating rooms; he had learned, the way all surgeons learn, to keep his expression from broadcasting what his mind was doing. But when he reached Valentina's note—when he read those six words in her handwriting on Hoffman letterhead—his hands went very still.

He removed his glasses.

He took a cloth from his breast pocket and cleaned them. Slowly. Methodically. The way he always did when something had made him angry enough to need a moment before he trusted his own voice.

The silence lasted nearly a minute.

"I should have pressed you when you withdrew." He set the glasses back on. His voice was even, but there was something underneath it, something tightly controlled. "I accepted your explanation because I respected what I thought was your choice." He looked at me directly. "I won't make that mistake again."

He reached for his phone before I had finished standing up.

I stood there a moment, watching him scroll through his contacts with the focused efficiency of a man who had already decided what needed to happen next.

"Keep that letter on your person," he said, phone to his ear. "Document everything you remember about her treatment timeline. Every appointment, every refusal, every conversation. Dates, times, exact wording if you have it." He held up one finger—*wait*—and then, into the phone: "James. It's Tucker. I need twenty minutes. Yes, today." A pause. "Because I have a situation that involves the London program, and I believe you're going to want to know about it before anyone else does."

He glanced at me over the phone. Something in his expression—not warmth exactly, but something adjacent to it. The look of a man who had filed a debt and was now, finally, beginning to pay it.

"Go home," he said quietly. "I'll call you tonight."

I picked up my coat. I slid the letter back into my inside pocket, against my ribs, where I'd been keeping it since the penthouse floor.

Outside, the March wind came off the Hudson cold and direct. I pressed my thumb into my wrist, once, and then I let go.

The threads were moving. That was enough. For now, that was enough.
