Chapter 2

I stepped out of the shadows.

Nolan's head jerked up. His hands fell away from Jade's waist. For a second, he just stared at me. Then his face shifted. I watched it happen in real time. The shock melted into something practiced. Something smooth.

"Everly," he said. His voice was calm. Too calm. "This isn't what it looks like."

I didn't say anything. I just walked closer. My heels clicked on the asphalt. The music from the warehouse thumped in the background. People were laughing somewhere behind me. Someone revved an engine.

"Baby, listen," Nolan said. He stepped away from the car. Away from her. "Jade was upset. She was crying. I was just—"

"Comforting her," I finished. My voice came out flat. Cold.

"Yes," he said quickly. He nodded like I'd finally understood. "Exactly. You know how sensitive she is. She's been under a lot of pressure at work, and tonight with the dress thing, she felt terrible—"

"She felt terrible," I repeated.

Jade moved then. She clutched Nolan's arm with both hands. Her eyes were huge. Wet. "Everly, I swear, nothing happened. He was just being nice. You always think the worst of me. You've hated me since the day I started."

I looked at her. Really looked at her. The tears were perfect. Just enough to make her eyes shine but not enough to ruin her makeup. Her lower lip trembled. Her voice was small and wounded.

She was good. I'd give her that.

"You burned my mother's dress," I said.

She blinked. "It was an accident—"

"And now you're kissing my husband."

"I wasn't—" Her voice broke. She turned to Nolan. "Tell her. Please. She's always done this. She's always twisted everything I do."

Nolan's jaw tightened. He looked at me. "You're being paranoid, Everly. I know tonight was hard, but you can't just—"

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the air. His head snapped to the side. The lot went quiet. Or maybe it didn't. Maybe the music kept playing and people kept laughing and I just couldn't hear anything except the ringing in my ears.

Nolan touched his cheek. His eyes went wide. Then narrow. "What the hell—"

I turned to Jade. Her mouth was open. She took a step back.

I slapped her too.

She gasped. Her hand flew to her face. "Oh my God," she whispered. "You're insane."

"No," I said quietly. "I'm done."

I pulled off my engagement ring. The diamond caught the neon light from the warehouse. I looked at it for a second. Three carats. Platinum band. He proposed on the terrace of his parents' hotel. There were roses and champagne and a photographer he hired to capture the moment. I cried when I said yes. I thought it was the happiest night of my life.

I threw the ring at Nolan's chest. It bounced off and landed somewhere on the asphalt. He didn't move to pick it up. He just stared at me.

"We're done," I said. My voice didn't shake. "Everything we built? You're about to find out exactly who built it."

I turned and walked away. My legs felt steady. My hands didn't tremble. Behind me, I heard Nolan shout my name. Once. Twice. I didn't look back. I got in my car, started the engine, and drove.

The penthouse was dark when I got home. I didn't turn on the lights. I went straight to the kitchen and poured black coffee into a mug. My hands were steady now. Completely steady. I carried the mug to the dining table and spread out the files I'd been keeping in the locked drawer of my desk.

Bank statements. Credit card records. Account transfer logs. I'd flagged irregularities for months. A Porsche lease under the company account. A luxury apartment rental in Tribeca. Designer purchases. All traced back to corporate funds. All authorized by Nolan.

I cross-referenced dates. Amounts. Vendors. The Porsche was registered to Jade Simpson. The apartment lease had her signature. The purchases matched her Instagram posts, the ones where she captioned everything with *#Blessed* and *#SurprisedByLove*.

He'd been stealing from the company. From us. To buy her a life.

I worked through the night. The sky outside turned gray, then pale blue. At 5:47 a.m., I called Rachel Nguyen. She answered on the second ring.

"Everly?" Her voice was sharp. Alert. "What happened?"

"I need you," I said. "Now."

"I'm on my way."

By dawn, Rachel was sitting across from me at the dining table. She flipped through the files. Her expression didn't change. She made notes in her leather portfolio. She asked questions. I answered all of them.

"This is embezzlement," she said finally. "Clear-cut. We can file a civil suit for recovery of funds. Depending on the amount, we might also have grounds for a criminal referral."

"Do it," I said.

She looked at me. "Everly, are you sure? Once we start this—"

"I'm sure."

She nodded. "Then we start today."

My phone buzzed. Then again. And again. I glanced at the screen. Nolan.

*Baby, let's talk. We can fix this.*

*You're overreacting. Nothing happened.*

*The company needs me. You can't do this.*

*After Brooklyn? After everything I gave up for us?*

I read every message. I didn't respond. I took screenshots. I forwarded them all to Rachel.

"For the file," I said.

She smiled. It was a small, cold smile. "Perfect."

I set the phone down. The coffee had gone cold. Outside, the city was waking up. I could hear traffic. Sirens. The hum of a million people starting their day.

I wasn't crying. I wasn't shaking.

I was ready.
