My Husband Stole My Kidney,Then Died for the Girl Who Was Me Chapter 1

I'd just finished my physical exam when a post popped up on my feed:

"My sugar baby is in kidney failure. The only person who matches her is my wife. How do I get my wife to willingly donate her kidney?"

One comment read:

"Easy. Tell your wife SHE'S the one with kidney failure, and your mistress is a kind stranger who's donating to save her. She'll walk into that operating room without a second thought!"

What a vile idea.

I was still shaking my head, pitying whatever poor woman was married to such a man, when my husband walked in holding a test result.

Benedict James was Chief of Surgery at this hospital. He stood before me now, his face a careful mask of concern and relief.

"Honey, you have kidney failure. You need surgery right away." He paused, letting that sink in. "But we got lucky—there's a kind soul here at the hospital who's a perfect match. She's agreed to donate. I've already scheduled the operation for tomorrow."

——

I stared at him.

The worry in his eyes. The way his voice caught just slightly. He looked like a man terrified of losing his wife.

I blinked, my mind blank for a split second.

It has to be a coincidence.

Benedict and I had been together for seven years—five dating, two married. He'd treated me like I was made of glass the entire time. I'd never so much as washed a dish in our home. This morning, I'd coughed twice, and he'd practically dragged me here for a full checkup.

Other than my parents, no one in this world had ever loved me more.

I looked up at him. "Are you sure there isn't some mistake?"

"I feel fine. How could I suddenly have kidney failure?"

He reached out and stroked my hair, his touch gentle. "Silly girl. Kidney disease usually doesn't show symptoms until it's serious. We're lucky we caught it early—otherwise, things could've gotten bad."

His expression was so sincere. His voice so tender.

And yet, looking at him made my blood run cold.

I stayed quiet for two seconds, then tried again. "Who's the donor?"

"A college student," he said without hesitation.

My heart dropped.

So it was true. Everything lined up perfectly.

That post—it was Benedict.

He was cheating on me.

And now he was trying to trick me into giving up my kidney for his mistress.

Ice spread through my chest, but I kept my face blank. "I don't know any college students. Why would a stranger agree to give me her kidney?"

Benedict smiled warmly. "She's a very kind girl."

"She told me her mother died of kidney disease years ago. She said she couldn't bear to watch anyone else go through that kind of pain."

"The moment she found out she was a match for you, she volunteered."

A lie. Every word of it.

But when he talked about her—that softness in his eyes, the way his gaze turned tender—that was real.

I knew that look. I knew it intimately.

It was the same look he'd had when he'd traveled a thousand miles just to see me for one day.

The same look when I'd been sick, and he'd stayed awake at my bedside for three nights straight.

The same look on our wedding day, when he'd dropped to one knee and made his vows.

He used to look at me that way.

When I didn't respond, Benedict's voice softened further. "Don't be scared, sweetheart."

"I'll perform the surgery myself."

"As long as I'm here, nothing bad will happen to you."

Hearing those words, I couldn't help but remember what he'd said years ago, the day he'd decided to go into medicine:

"Fern Fox, I swear—I'm going to become the best doctor I can be. I'll keep you safe and healthy for the rest of your life."

What a joke.

The man who'd chosen medicine to protect me—
