Chapter 2

The doorman held the lobby door open with a tip of his hat. "Welcome home, Mrs. Gray."

"Thank you, Thomas," I said, offering a small, fragile smile.

I took the elevator up to our Tribeca loft. When the doors slid open, Westin was waiting in the foyer. He wore soft gray cashmere and smelled of sandalwood. He took my weekend bag and wrapped his arms around me.

"I missed you so much," he murmured against my hair.

I rested my chin on his shoulder. My hands patted his back gently. "I missed you too."

That evening, I made his favorite dinner: pan-seared ribeye with rosemary butter and roasted potatoes. I sat across from him at the dining table, resting my chin on my hands, asking about his broadcast ratings and the network gossip. I nodded at all the right times. I laughed at his jokes.

Later, in our king-sized bed, he pulled me against his chest. His arm draped over my waist, careful not to press too hard against my healing incision.

He closed his eyes, breathing slowly. But inside his head, the noise never stopped.

*Three years of sneaking around with Dior,* his thoughts hummed, smug and warm. *All that waiting, and it's finally paying off. She's in that crummy apartment on 4th Street in Park Slope with the baby, running out of cash. But not for long.*

I kept my breathing steady. I stared into the dark room.

His mind drifted deeper, running through numbers like a ledger. *Clause 9 in her father’s trust. An adopted legal heir triggers an immediate five-million-dollar distribution, and full principal control within two years. And Scarlet won't suspect a thing. She can't have kids now anyway. God, getting that secret vasectomy last year was the smartest move I ever made. No stray mistakes. Just Dior's boy.*

A chill ran down my spine, but my body stayed limp in his arms.

*A secret vasectomy.*

He had cut his own cords months before he begged me to cut mine. He had never intended to give me a chance.

The next morning, Westin left early for a network breakfast meeting.

The moment the front door clicked shut, I went to the kitchen. I made a pot of coffee. For five years, I had added two spoons of sugar and a splash of oat milk to match his taste. Today, I poured it black. I took a sip. It was hot, bitter, and sharp on my tongue. I didn't wince. It tasted clean.

I set the mug down and pulled a flat cardboard box from under the bathroom sink. It had arrived at the recovery clinic under a fake name.

Inside were six thumbnail-sized audio bugs with high-gain microphones.

I moved through the loft with quiet focus. I slipped one bug into the hollowed spine of a hardcover art book in Westin’s study. I stuck another behind the trim of the liquor cabinet where he poured his evening scotch. I knelt and pressed a third beneath the lip of the heavy quartz kitchen island, right where he stood to take private calls.

When I finished, I sat at my vanity. I pulled out a small black moleskin notebook and began to write.

I didn't write about heartbreak. I wrote dates, addresses, and account numbers.

*Dior Lawson. 712 4th Street, Apt 3B, Park Slope.*

*Three-year timeline.*

*Vasectomy: Dr. Miller's clinic, check medical records.*

*Trust clause 9: adoption trigger.*

I closed the book and locked it inside my jewelry safe.

Two nights later, Julia called for a family dinner at our loft.

She arrived carrying a bakery box of pastries, wearing an ivory wool sweater. Behind her walked my aunt Dior. Dior looked pale. Her dark hair fell around her face in loose waves, and she wore a simple sweater that made her look small and helpless.

We sat around the living room coffee table. Westin poured wine for everyone except me.

"How are you feeling, Scarlet?" Dior asked softly, her fingers fidgeting with a paper napkin. "Julia told me about the surgery. I was so sorry to hear."

*Look at her,* Dior's mind hissed, sharp and acidic. *Sitting on fifteen million dollars, completely useless. She doesn't deserve Westin. She never did.*

"I'm recovering well, Aunt Dior," I said, keeping my tone meek. "Just taking things one day at a time."

Julia cleared her throat, placing a manicured hand on Dior’s wrist. "Dior has been having a very difficult time, darling. With the baby."

Dior’s eyes filled with tears right on cue. She looked down at her hands. "I just... I don't know what to do. The father vanished. The rent is impossible. I'm drowning, Julia. I love my boy, but I can barely buy formula. I’ve been thinking... maybe adoption is the only way he gets a real life."

*Hit your mark, Dior,* Julia thought, her eyes narrowing slightly. *Don't oversell it.*

*Come on, take the bait,* Westin’s mind urged from the armchair beside me. His knuckles whitened against his wine glass. *Offer to help. Say the words.*

Julia sighed deeply, leaning forward. "It breaks my heart. A child of our blood, raised by strangers? Scarlet... Westin... I know you two decided against having babies of your own. But what about this? What if you took him in? A family adoption. It would save Dior, and it would give a child a beautiful home."

The room fell completely silent.

Three pairs of eyes fixed on me.

I looked from Dior’s trembling chin to my mother’s polished smile, and finally to Westin’s earnest, pleading gaze. Beneath their masks, their minds were screaming at me in unison, hungry and vicious.

I pressed a hand against my stomach, feeling the faint ache beneath my sweater.

Then I looked up, letting my eyes turn round and unsure.

"It's... so sudden," I whispered softly. "I'm still healing, Mom. Westin and I need time to think about this. Give me a few days."

Westin quickly reached over and squeezed my knee. "Of course, sweetheart. No pressure. We'll talk about it."

*She's already softening,* his mind purred with satisfaction. *We have her.*

I smiled faintly at my husband and took another sip of my black coffee.
