Chapter 3

Elena Vasquez had an office on the fourth floor of a brick building in Brooklyn. She didn't belong to my father's elite legal circle. She had never met my mother.

She slid a thick folder across the desk.

"Clause 9 is a trap, Scarlet," Elena said. Her voice was flat and dry. "If you adopt a child, legal guardianship expands. Westin gains joint parental standing immediately. In twenty-four months, he can petition the court to co-manage the trust principal."

"Five million upfront?" I asked.

"Five million the day the adoption is finalized," Elena nodded. "And full access to the remaining ten million two years later. You lose sole control of the money."

I traced my thumb along the paper. My scar throbbed slightly beneath my waistband, but my face stayed blank.

"Draw up the divorce papers," I told her. "Make them airtight. Freeze every joint account. Prepare the fraud disclosures. But don't file yet."

Elena looked at me over her glasses. "When do we move?"

"When I tell you," I said. "Not a second before."

The next afternoon, I invited Dior to lunch at a café in Soho.

She ordered mint tea and spent ten minutes tearing a muffin into tiny crumbs. She wore an oversized cardigan that looked cheap, but her watch was an old Cartier.

"I feel so awful, Scarlet," she whispered, touching my wrist. Her fingers were clammy. "Bringing my mess to your door. You just had major surgery. You should be resting."

"You're family, Aunt Dior," I said, offering a warm smile. "We take care of each other."

I leaned in closer. Her mind was already racing, loud and jumpy like static on a bad TV channel.

*If Westin doesn't get that five million soon, I’m dead,* she thought. A jolt of pure panic spiked through her chest. *What if Hendrix finds me? What if he tracks me down to Park Slope?*

I kept my eyes soft. "Are you sleeping okay?"

"Barely," she sighed, dabbing at her dry eyes.

In her head, the memories flared up, raw and ugly. *Hendrix Webb. That crazy brute. Three hundred thousand dollars gone, and he's still rotting in that dump in Newark. Working construction, replaying my old voicemails every night like a maniac. If he finds out about the baby... if he sees me on the street...*

"It will all work out," I said softly, patting her hand. "I promise."

*You have no idea,* Dior thought, her lips curving into a tiny, smug smile. *You stupid, sterile girl.*

That night, while Westin slept beside me, I opened my laptop in the dark. I typed *Hendrix Webb Newark* into a public records database.

It didn't take long to find him. An old mugshot from five years ago. A current address in the Ironbound district of Newark. A string of debt collection notices.

A broken, violent man with three hundred thousand reasons to hate my aunt.

I closed the laptop and wrote his address in my black notebook.

A loaded gun. Safety on. Waiting for my finger on the trigger.

On Sunday morning, I met Julia for brunch on the Upper East Side.

The bistro smelled of roasted coffee and fresh bread. Julia looked immaculate in a beige silk blouse. Her pearl earrings caught the bright sunlight. She cut her poached egg with calm precision.

"Westin tells me you're warming up to the idea of the baby," she said, dabbing her mouth with a cloth napkin. "That's wonderful, darling. Children hold a family together."

"I've been thinking a lot about family lately," I said quietly. "About Grandma and Grandpa Lawson. I wish they were still here to see everything."

Julia’s fork stopped an inch above her plate.

Her face didn't move. Her smile stayed perfectly polite.

But her thoughts tore through my head so hard I had to grip the edge of the table.

*Smoke. Thick black smoke filling the hallway. The smell of burning pine and roast turkey. A seven-year-old Dior crying on the basement stairs, holding a red box of kitchen matches. Julia’s young hand pushing Dior’s tiny shoulder. 'Just drop it near the wood pile, Dior. Be a brave girl. Cooper and I will buy you that pony.' Thanksgiving night. Screams from the master bedroom. The Lawson estate crumbling into ash.*

My stomach dropped into a cold, black pit.

The fire was no accident.

My mother and father had burned my grandparents alive for an inheritance. And they had made a seven-year-old girl strike the match.

"Yes," Julia said smoothly, lowering her fork to the plate. "They were wonderful people. A tragic night, that Thanksgiving. But we must look forward, Scarlet. Not backward."

"You're right, Mom," I said. My voice did not shake. "Looking back changes nothing."

When I got back to the loft, I locked myself in the bathroom. I opened my black notebook and turned to a fresh page.

*November 26, 1998. Lawson estate fire. Double homicide. Julia and Cooper Price.*

I sat down at the vanity and opened the Manhattan Public Library digital archives. I started pulling old newspaper articles and insurance claims from twenty-six years ago.

They had taken my womb. They had planned to steal my fortune.

Now, I was going to unbury their dead.
