My Husband Sent Me to Prison to Test My Love Novel Cover

My Husband Sent Me to Prison to Test My Love

The hotel lobby drips with old money — lilies, marble, and the careless ease of those who never fear rent. Head down, I follow the event coordinator through a service corridor in a stiff new uniform, its tag still scratching my neck. My assignment: Miss King's private birthday gala. High-profile. High-stakes. Strictly no questions. Staying invisible is my specialty — until a billionaire's world of obsession and secrets pulls me under. He calls it a test of love. I call it a trap. And the price of failing it is everything I have left.

Chapter 2

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and lilies.

Brandon brought the lilies. A whole armful, wrapped in cream paper with a silk ribbon. He set them on the windowsill like he was arranging a photo shoot. He'd already had me moved to a private suite on the top floor. The kind with a view of the East River and a nurse who knocked before entering.

My hand was in a cast up to the elbow. The painkillers made everything soft around the edges, but not soft enough.

He pulled a chair to the bedside. Sat down. Straightened his cufflinks.

I watched him do it. That small, precise movement. I'd seen him do it a hundred times over dinner in our tiny apartment in Queens. I used to think it was a nervous habit. Now I understood it was a reset button. A man like him needed one, in a life like his.

"Sydney." His voice was low. Careful. "I know what you're thinking."

"You don't."

He paused. Adjusted. Kept going.

"I owe you the truth. All of it. I should have told you from the beginning who I was. I know that now." His hands folded neatly in his lap. "But everything I did—everything—was because I had to know. You have no idea what it's like, in my world. Women who smile at you and see only the bank account behind your eyes. I needed to know that what we had was real."

I stared at the ceiling. There was a water stain shaped like a bird.

"The test is over," he said. "You passed. You passed every part of it. And I swear to you, Sydney, on everything I have—"

"I lost the baby."

The words came out quiet. Almost polite.

He stopped mid-sentence. His mouth stayed open around a word he didn't finish.

"What?"

"In prison. Four months in." I kept my eyes on the water stain. "I didn't know I was pregnant when I went in. I found out at the intake physical. They told me and then they walked me to my cell."

"Sydney—"

"The lights in the infirmary were fluorescent. The kind that hum. There was a nurse on duty who was chewing gum. She didn't look up when I told her something was wrong. She said, 'Sit down, honey, we'll get to you.' There was blood on the bench by the time she got to me."

My voice didn't shake. That was the strange part. It came out flat and clean, like I was reading a grocery list.

"They took me to a hospital. I was in restraints. The doctor didn't look at my face. He told the guard the fetus was gone and asked if I wanted to see. I said no. I said yes. I said no again. They took her away before I could decide."

Brandon made a sound. Small. Broken open.

"I named her in my head," I said. "On the drive back. I never told anyone. I didn't tell my lawyer. I didn't write it down. I just carried it."

I turned my head on the pillow and looked at him.

His face was wrong. The polish was gone. His mouth was trembling, and his eyes had that terrible glassy stretch of a man who has just understood something he cannot fix.

He slid off the chair.

Onto his knees.

His hands grabbed the edge of my hospital gown, twisted the thin cotton in his fists. His forehead pressed against the mattress. His shoulders started to shake.

"Sydney. Sydney, please—God, I didn't—"

I watched him cry.

I thought I would feel something. Vindication. Rage. Some hot surge of grief finally meeting a witness. Instead I felt very far away, like I was watching him from the other side of the water stain on the ceiling.

"I'll give you anything." His voice was muffled against the sheet. "The penthouse. The place in the Hamptons. I'll put your name on the accounts—all of them, Sydney, all of them, tomorrow. A foundation. We'll start a foundation for her. Whatever name you want, we'll—"

"Stop."

He lifted his head. His face was wet. His eyes were searching mine for the crack, the opening, the place where the old Sydney still lived and could be reached.

I watched him look for her.

She wasn't there.

What he was doing—the tears, the kneeling, the itemized list of assets—it wasn't grief. I knew grief. Grief had lived in my chest for two and a half years with a name I never said out loud. This was something else. This was a man watching a deal go sideways and pulling every lever he had.

"I want a divorce," I said.

The words landed in the room like a dropped glass.

His hands tightened on my gown. "No."

"Brandon."

"No. Sydney, listen to me—you're in shock, you're in pain, you're not thinking clearly—"

"I want a divorce."

"I'm not letting you go." His voice cracked, but underneath it was something harder. Something that had never once considered the word no as a real answer. "I won't sign anything. Do you hear me? I won't. You're my wife."

There it was.

I let my head sink back into the pillow. Closed my eyes.

He kept talking. About love. About time. About how I'd see, I'd understand, we'd get through this together.

I barely heard him.

I was already somewhere else. Already three steps ahead, in a room I hadn't built yet, drafting the language of a document he didn't know was coming.

He thought refusing me was power.

He had just handed me the map.

Outside, the East River caught the last of the afternoon light. My good hand rested flat on the sheet, perfectly still.

I opened my eyes and looked at the ceiling.

"Okay," I said softly. "Okay, Brandon."

He exhaled like a man reprieved.

He had no idea what he'd just agreed to.
