My Husband Sent Me to Prison to Test My Love Novel Cover

My Husband Sent Me to Prison to Test My Love

The hotel lobby drips with old money — lilies, marble, and the careless ease of those who never fear rent. Head down, I follow the event coordinator through a service corridor in a stiff new uniform, its tag still scratching my neck. My assignment: Miss King's private birthday gala. High-profile. High-stakes. Strictly no questions. Staying invisible is my specialty — until a billionaire's world of obsession and secrets pulls me under. He calls it a test of love. I call it a trap. And the price of failing it is everything I have left.

Chapter 3

Diana Lowe arrived at the hospital on a Tuesday morning.

She wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather portfolio the color of dried blood. She did not smile at me. I liked her immediately.

"I've drafted what you asked for," she said. She set the portfolio on the tray table beside my untouched breakfast. "Read it before he gets here."

I read it with my good hand holding the pages flat. The language was clean. Six pages. No loopholes. The clause that mattered sat in the middle of page four, written in the same neutral font as the rest.

In the event of any infidelity by the Husband, whether physical, emotional, or financial, all marital and non-marital assets held in the Husband's name shall transfer, in full, to the Wife.

I read it twice.

"He'll want to negotiate," Diana said.

"He won't."

She raised an eyebrow.

"He needs me to believe him," I said. "He can't negotiate that."

She nodded once and stepped back against the window.

Brandon arrived at ten with coffee I didn't ask for. He set the cup on the tray and saw the portfolio. His eyes flicked to Diana. Back to me.

"Who is this?"

"My attorney."

He smiled the way you smile at a child holding a knife. "Sydney. Baby. We don't need attorneys."

"Sit down, Brandon."

He sat.

I pushed the portfolio across the tray table with my fingertips. My cast dragged on the plastic. He watched it move like it might bite him.

"I want to try," I said. "I've been thinking about what you said. About starting again."

His face opened. Actually opened, like a door I hadn't touched in years. For a second I almost felt sorry for him. Then I remembered the emerald on the marble floor and the feeling passed.

"But I need something first," I said. "I need to know you mean it."

He opened the portfolio.

I watched his eyes move down the first page. The second. He was fast. He'd been raised on documents like this. When he hit page four, his hand stopped.

He didn't look up.

"Sydney."

"Yes."

"This is—" He laughed, short and thin. "This is everything."

"If you cheat."

"This is my whole life."

"If you cheat," I said again.

His hand hovered over the last page. His pen was already in his fingers. I don't remember him taking it out. Some part of him had known this was coming from the moment Diana said good morning.

He looked at me finally. The performance was still on his face, but underneath it something small and rat-like was calculating.

"You don't trust me," he said softly.

"No."

"After everything I've told you—"

"Brandon." My voice stayed level. "If your love is real, this paper costs you nothing. You'll never trigger it. You'll die a rich man in our bed at ninety and this document will sit in a drawer."

He stared at me.

I stared back.

He signed.

The pen scratched. Diana stepped forward, took the portfolio, checked the signature, and closed it. She was already walking toward the door.

"Thank you," I said.

Brandon exhaled. He leaned back in the chair. Then, without thinking, without any awareness at all, he lifted his wrists and straightened his cufflinks. Left. Right. That small precise reset.

I watched him do it.

I knew then. Not suspected. Knew. The way you know a match will light when you strike it.

He would cheat again.

I reached for the coffee he'd brought and took a sip. It was still warm.

"Take me home," I said.

"Home," he repeated, like the word tasted good in his mouth.

He had no idea which home I meant.

***

The gala was his idea.

"A welcome home," he told the press. "For the woman who has always been my whole world."

He rented the ballroom at the Plaza. He hired a stylist named Fernand who spoke only in French and pinned couture to my ribs with the reverence of a man handling relics. The dress he chose for the announcement was ivory silk, cut narrow through the waist, with a train that whispered when I walked. I ran my thumb along the seam once, out of habit. Hand-stitched. Italian house. Six thousand dollars of thread, maybe more.

Brandon watched me in the mirror. "You look like yourself again."

I smiled at him in the glass. "I feel like myself."

That part was true. He just didn't know which self.

For three weeks I played the role. I stood beside him at charity dinners in the Village. I let photographers catch me laughing at his jokes on the steps of the Met. I wore his mother's diamonds to a Lincoln Center benefit and told a reporter from Vogue that we were, quote, stronger than ever.

At night I lay on the far edge of the mattress and listened to him breathe.

Maya came over on Thursdays. Officially, she was helping me pick fabrics for a return to design. Unofficially, she brought a laptop in a canvas bag and we sat on the floor of the guest room with the door locked.

"Holding companies here," she said, sliding a printout across the rug. "Three in Delaware, two in the Caymans. Property portfolio is under Hayes Meridian, which sits under Meridian Trust, which sits under him personally."

I traced the chart with my finger.

"Patrick Shen," she said, tapping a name near the top. "He signs for everything. If Brandon coughs, Patrick catches it."

"Then Patrick is next."

Maya looked at me.

"After," I said.

She nodded and went back to the pages.

Downstairs, Brandon was on the phone with a florist about the gala centerpieces. His voice drifted up through the vents, warm and sure. He was laughing about peonies.

I listened to him laugh.

I turned the page.
