Chapter 4

My lawyer called on Thursday afternoon.

"He signed," Mr. Vance said over the speaker.

The Daniels Corporation board had met that morning. With the stock price tanking and the gala video playing on every news feed, they gave Ignacio an ultimatum: sign the divorce papers to stop the bleeding, or lose his seat as CEO.

Ignacio folded.

Mr. Vance told me Ignacio threw the gold pen across the conference table. He told his attorneys it was just temporary PR damage control. He swore I would come crawling back on my knees within a month, and that he didn’t even care.

An hour later, a courier arrived with the red folder.

I opened it on my kitchen counter. There it was: Ignacio’s sharp, arrogant signature at the bottom of the last page. Seven years of marriage, finished with black ink.

I left the papers on the counter next to my coffee mug. My hands didn't shake.

I pulled out my phone and made two calls.

The first call was to the Massachusetts General Neurosurgery Center in Boston.

"We have an opening this Friday morning for the resection," the coordinator told me.

"Book it," I said. "I'll be on the red-eye."

The second call was to Finley.

He picked up on the second ring. "Winnie?"

"Are you busy?" I asked. "I need a ride to Sea-Tac tonight."

He didn't ask why. He didn't ask where I was going or when I’d be back.

"I'll be at your curb in twenty minutes," he said.

His beat-up silver sedan pulled up right on time.

He popped the trunk, stepped out into the mist, and took my small rolling suitcase. His fingers brushed against mine. His skin was warm against the cold drizzle.

"Thanks, Finley," I said, sliding into the passenger seat.

The drive to the airport was quiet. The rhythmic thump of the windshield wipers filled the car. Finley kept both hands on the wheel, his jaw set tight. He didn't pry. He never pried.

He parked in the terminal garage and walked me inside. He carried my heavy coat over his arm. At the gate, we sat side by side on the vinyl seats for thirty minutes, watching the tarmac lights flicker in the fog.

When the agent called my boarding group, I stood up.

Finley stood with me. He handed me my bag. His dark eyes searched my face. They were full of quiet worry, but his voice stayed calm.

"Text me when you land," he said softly.

I looked at his worn canvas jacket, his tired eyes, his gentle mouth. A sudden tightness squeezed my throat.

"Finley?"

"Yeah?"

"If I don't come back the same..." I paused. My fingers curled into my coat pocket. "Remember that I liked the Thai place."

It was the closest I had ever come to telling him I was scared. It was the most honest thing I had ever said to him.

Finley blinked. His lips parted, but before he could say a word, I turned and scanned my boarding pass at the turnstile.

I didn't look back.

Finley told me months later that he walked back to his car and couldn't turn the key. He sat in the dim concrete garage for forty minutes after my plane took off, staring at the steering wheel in the dark.

***

The hospital room in Boston was bright and sterile.

A team of nurses in blue scrubs wheeled me into the operating theater. They placed a cold plastic mask over my nose and mouth.

"Count down from ten, Winnie," the anesthesiologist said.

"Ten. Nine. Eight..."

The world went black.

When I opened my eyes, the ceiling was a blur of soft yellow lights. My head throbbed under a thick wrap of bandages.

A doctor with gray hair stood beside my bed, holding a tablet.

"Welcome back," he said with a warm smile. "The surgery went very well. We removed the mass cleanly."

I swallowed. My throat felt like sandpaper. "Good."

"I need to run a few cognitive checks with you. Can you tell me your full name?"

"Winnie Fox."

"Do you know the year?"

"Yes." I gave him the year, the month, and the city.

"Good. Who was your mother?"

"Penny Fox," I whispered. A small ache went through my chest, but it felt familiar. Like an old scar.

The doctor nodded, tapping his screen. Then he looked up at me carefully.

"Do you know who Ignacio Daniels is?"

I stared at him. I rolled the syllables around in my head. *Ignacio. Daniels.*

Nothing.

The name sounded like a stranger from a phone book.

"No," I said honestly. "Should I?"

The doctor exchanged a quick glance with the nurse. He asked me about a wedding in Seattle. He asked about a high-rise penthouse. He pulled out a printed photo of a tall man in a dark suit with sharp, handsome features.

I looked at the man in the picture. My heart rate monitor stayed completely flat and steady.

"I’ve never seen him before," I told the doctor. "Who is he?"

"A piece of your hippocampus took some trauma during the tumor extraction," the doctor explained gently. "It caused targeted retrograde amnesia. You've lost specific episodic memories from the past seven years. It looks permanent, Winnie."

He waited for me to cry. He waited for me to panic.

I lay back against the flat pillow and looked at the white curtains.

Seven years of my life had vanished into thin air. Every argument, every broken promise, every tear on a cold floor—wiped out like chalk off a board.

I placed a hand over my chest.

There was a blank space inside me. But it didn't burn. It didn't ache at all.

I didn't feel broken. I just felt light.
