Chapter 5

When I opened my eyes the next morning, the room was quiet.

The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the silence. Rain tapped lightly against the windowpane.

Then I saw him.

Finley was sitting in the plastic armchair in the corner. His head was bent over his laptop, typing with one hand. His worn canvas jacket was draped over the back of the chair. He looked tired. Dark circles shadowed his eyes.

On the windowsill next to him sat a white takeout container from the Thai spot near campus.

He hadn't told me he was coming. He had just flown across the country.

I looked at him, and for the first time in a very long time, I didn't feel my guard go up. I didn't reach for my armor.

"You came," I said. My voice was raspy from the breathing tube.

Finley’s head snapped up.

The tension in his shoulders dropped all at once. He closed the laptop with a quiet click and set it on the floor. He stood up and crossed the room in two strides, stopping right beside my bed.

"I didn't think anyone would come," I murmured.

Finley looked down at me. His dark eyes were soft and steady. There was no pity in them. Just an open, quiet warmth.

"Bad days end," he said softly. "I promised."

He reached out his hand. His long fingers were warm.

I didn't pull away. I slid my palm into his and curled my fingers around his thumb. He didn't squeeze too hard. He just held on, grounding me against the flat mattress.

I closed my eyes. The knot in my chest loosened. Holding his hand, I fell back asleep without a single bad dream.

Two days later, the head nurse came into my room to check my vitals.

She wrapped the blood pressure cuff around my arm and shook her head with a faint frown.

"You've got quite the dramatic admirer, Winnie," she said, pumping the bulb.

I blinked. "What do you mean?"

"Yesterday afternoon. A man in a dark tailored coat tried to shove his way past security at the reception desk. He was demanding your room number. He claimed he was your husband."

I stared at her. "My husband?"

"That’s what he said. He was raising his voice, causing a scene. The floor supervisor had to step in." The nurse released the valve, listening to the pulse. "We pulled up your chart. You left strict instructions before surgery. Only one authorized visitor."

"Finley Torres," I said.

"Exactly," she smiled. "We told the man that Finley Torres was the only person allowed on this floor. He turned white as a sheet. Wouldn't leave until security threatened to call the police."

I didn't say anything. I just watched the rain slide down the glass.

I found out later from Marcus that Ignacio had flown out on a commercial flight in the middle of a workday. After being escorted out of the hospital, he didn't fly back right away. He drove back to his hotel and sat in his rental car in the empty parking lot for two hours.

The signed divorce papers were still sitting in his glove compartment.

He sat there in the cold, reading my signature over and over. For the first time in his privileged life, the truth was sinking in.

I was gone. And he couldn't buy his way back.

By the time I returned to Seattle three weeks later, the city was buzzing with new gossip.

The Daniels family PR team had been working overtime. With their stock price bleeding and the public still furious about the chandelier video, they needed a fast pivot. They needed a redemption arc.

So they turned a dirty affair into a fairy tale.

On Friday morning, full-page announcements ran in every local paper. Ignacio Daniels and Rowan Meyer were officially engaged. The press release called it an "unexpected journey to true love."

They booked the Grand Ballroom at The Four Seasons Seattle.

Three hundred high-society guests. Custom imported white roses. Live orchestral music. Top-tier media outlets received VIP passes to cover the spectacle.

Ignacio wanted a show. He wanted to prove that Daniels Corporation was untouchable, that his life was perfect, and that he had moved on without a scratch.

He probably thought the news would break me. He probably thought I was sitting in my condo, crying over his new bride, wishing I had never asked for a divorce.

I sat at my glass dining table with a mug of black coffee.

Across from me, Finley was running code on his screen. The early morning sunlight hit the bay, turning the cold water to silver.

I picked up the thick manila envelope Marcus had delivered the night before. Inside were pharmacy logs from twelve years ago. Bank wire receipts. A written, signed confession from Clara Reyes, our old housekeeper.

Proof that Sophia Meyer had slowly poisoned my mother’s heart medication.

I ran my thumb over the edge of the papers.

I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel pain.

I felt only cold, crystalline clarity.

"Finley?" I said quietly.

He looked up from his monitor. "Yeah, Winnie?"

"Do you have a tuxedo?"

A faint, curious smile touched his lips. "I can rent one."

"Good," I said, setting the coffee mug down. "We have an engagement party to attend."
