Chapter 4

The first cramp hit at two-fifteen.

I was at the sink, washing my hands, watching the water run over my knuckles. Then it came—low and deep, like something tearing loose from its roots. I gripped the edge of the porcelain and breathed through it.

Just stress, I told myself. Just the pills settling.

The second one dropped me to my knees.

I caught myself on the tile wall. My phone slid from my coat pocket and skidded across the floor, stopping three feet away. I reached for it. My arm wouldn't cooperate. The cramp was a fist now, squeezing, twisting, and I pressed my forehead against the cool marble and made a sound I didn't recognize as my own.

I knew.

I think I'd known the moment I swallowed them. That low, sick hum behind my sternum. That crawling wrongness I couldn't name.

I knew what was in those pills. I knew what they were doing.

I pressed my palm flat against my stomach. The fabric of my dress was warm. Then wet.

The pain came in waves after that. Each one worse than the last. I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the floor with my back against the cabinet and my knees drawn up and my hand still pressed to my abdomen like I could hold something in. Like I could stop what was already happening.

I couldn't.

My phone screen glowed three feet away. Rhodes's name was in my recent calls. I stared at it.

I didn't call him.

I don't know why. Maybe I already understood that it wouldn't matter. That he would send Claire. That he would call it an episode. That Aleena would be in his office when he got the news, and she would touch his arm, and he would believe whatever she told him.

Maybe I just didn't have enough left in me to hear his voice.

I pressed my cheek against the tile and closed my eyes.

I'm sorry, I whispered.

The words went nowhere. The bathroom was white and quiet and completely empty. The city hummed forty-two floors below. Someone's heels clicked past the door and faded down the hallway.

No one knocked.

No one came.

I lay on the cold marble floor of my husband's office building and lost our child, and the only sound was my own breathing and the distant, indifferent noise of the world going on without me.

---

I don't remember the security team finding me. I remember the ceiling moving, and a man's voice saying *ma'am* very carefully, and the strange sensation of being lifted.

The hospital was private. A single room with heavy curtains and the smell of antiseptic and fresh flowers someone had put on the windowsill for appearances. A doctor spoke to me in a low, measured voice. I answered his questions. Yes. No. Three weeks, I think. I don't know. I don't know.

No one mentioned the word *miscarriage* in any official paperwork.

The discharge summary read: *stress-related collapse, observation and recovery.*

I signed it. I didn't argue.

Aleena had already been to see Rhodes. I could tell by the way the nurses moved around me—careful, a little too careful, the way people move when they've been told a story and aren't sure they believe it. Whatever she'd said, it had held. Rhodes sent flowers on the second day. White lilies. No note.

I left them on the windowsill when I checked out.

---

The penthouse was quiet when I came home.

Rhodes wasn't there. I didn't ask where he was.

I moved through the rooms slowly. Everything was exactly where it had always been. The marble counters. The gray sectional. The view of the city that had never felt like mine.

I went to the bedroom. Then to the closet.

Someone had reorganized it while I was gone. My coats were shifted to the left. The shelf paper was smoothed flat. Everything was neat and ordered and wrong.

I looked up.

The hatbox was still there. Top shelf, pushed back toward the wall. A thin film of dust had already settled on the lid.

I stood on my toes and lifted it down.

The booties were inside. Pale yellow. Soft. Still looped on the needles where I'd left them, not quite finished. The envelope was underneath, addressed in my own handwriting.

*My little one.*

I sat down on the closet floor with the box in my lap.

I didn't cry. I'd expected to cry. Instead I just sat there in the half-dark with the box against my chest and the city glowing faintly through the curtains, and I felt something very quiet and very permanent settle into place inside me.

Not grief. Not yet.

Something colder. Something that had no name yet but was already deciding things.

I put the lid back on the box. I stood up. I slid it to the back of the shelf.

Then I walked out of the closet and closed the door behind me.
