Chapter 5

I woke up in the guest room.

The ceiling was white. The light was wrong—too bright, too late. My mouth tasted like copper and something sweet underneath it, chemical and faint. My head felt packed with cotton.

I sat up slowly. My dress was wrinkled. One heel was missing. I had no memory of leaving the dining room.

I pressed my fingers to my temple and tried to pull the night back. The dinner. The champagne—one glass, I'd only had one. Aleena across the table, touching Rhodes's sleeve, laughing at something he said. A man I didn't recognize handing me a fresh drink. The room tilting.

That was the last thing I had.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand.

Fifty-seven missed calls.

I opened the first news alert and went very still.

*MRS. CUNNINGHAM'S SCANDAL: EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE.* The thumbnail was blurred. My face was not.

I watched eleven seconds of it. That was all I could manage. Eleven seconds of myself—glassy-eyed, barely upright, a stranger's hand on my shoulder—before I put the phone face-down on the mattress and sat there with my hands in my lap.

The city was already awake outside the window. It didn't care.

---

Down the hall, in his study, Rhodes watched it in full.

I know because I could hear Aleena's voice through the door. Low and careful. The voice she used when she was performing grief.

'I tried to tell you,' she was saying. 'I didn't want to be right. I really didn't.'

A pause.

'The board has already called twice this morning. Your father too. Rhodes, I'm so sorry. I know how much you wanted to believe in her.'

Silence from him. That particular silence I knew—the one that meant a decision had already been made and he was simply waiting for the paperwork to catch up.

I stood in the hallway in my wrinkled dress with one heel on and listened to my marriage end through a closed door.

Then I went to the bathroom and washed my face. I found my other heel under the guest bed. I changed into clean clothes. I made myself coffee in the kitchen because no one else was going to.

I drank it standing at the window, watching the street below.

A woman walked a dog. A delivery truck idled at the corner. A man in a gray coat checked his watch.

The world had not stopped. It never did.

---

His assistant called me into the study at eleven.

Not Rhodes. His assistant.

He was at his desk when I walked in. Jacket on. Tie straight. The same posture he'd had the day I swallowed those pills in this building, in front of this man, while Aleena sat three feet away and watched.

The divorce papers were in the center of the desk.

A pen beside them.

He didn't stand. He didn't look at me directly. He looked at a point just past my left shoulder, the way you look at something you've already decided to stop seeing.

'The video speaks for itself,' he said. 'You've humiliated the Cunningham name for the last time. The settlement is generous. More than generous, given the circumstances.'

Given the circumstances.

I looked at the papers. Clean white pages. His lawyers' letterhead. My name printed in a font that had nothing to do with me.

I thought about the bathroom floor on the forty-second floor. The cold tile against my cheek. The way I'd pressed my hand against my stomach and whispered *I'm sorry* into empty air.

I thought about pale yellow booties on a closet shelf.

I picked up the pen.

I signed every page. Quickly. Cleanly. No hesitation.

Then I found the settlement figure—the number his lawyers had decided was the price of three years, a kidney, a child I never got to name—and I drew a single line through it.

One line. Steady. Unhurried.

I signed my name beneath it.

Rhodes's eyes dropped to the papers for the first time. Something moved across his face. Not guilt. Not grief. Something closer to confusion, the expression of a man whose script had just gone off-page.

I set the pen down.

'I don't want your money,' I said.

My voice came out level. Quiet. Like water that has been still for a long time.

I didn't say anything else. There was nothing else worth saying to him. Not anymore. Not ever again.

I walked out of the study. Down the hall. Through the foyer where my shopping bags had hit the marble floor three weeks ago and my whole world had cracked open.

I didn't look back.

The elevator came immediately. The doors opened and I stepped inside and watched the penthouse disappear behind polished steel.

Somewhere above me, Rhodes was still sitting at his desk, staring at the line I'd drawn through his settlement.

I pressed the button for the lobby.

I had a flight to catch.
