Chapter 1

The plastic stick trembled between my fingers as I stared at the two pink lines that had appeared like a miracle. Dawn light filtered through the penthouse bathroom's floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long shadows across the marble floor. I was pregnant. After ten years of loving a man who treated me like beautiful furniture, I was carrying his child. For the first time in years, something warm and dangerous bloomed in my chest—hope.

I pressed my free hand against my still-flat stomach, imagining the life growing inside me. A baby. My baby. Our baby. The words felt foreign on my tongue, but they tasted like possibility.

"Collin," I whispered to my reflection, rehearsing the moment. "I have something to tell you." My voice cracked slightly. In the mirror, I barely recognized myself—thirty-two years old and still waiting for the man I loved to see me. But this would change everything. A child would give me a name in his world. A purpose. A future.

I tucked the test into my pocket and moved through the penthouse like a ghost, which was what I'd become after a decade of making myself smaller to fit into Collin's life. The morning passed in a haze of preparation. I selected a cream silk blouse—Collin had once said the color made my skin glow. I arranged fresh flowers in the dining room, their scent filling the space with something that felt like celebration. By evening, my heart hammered against my ribs as I heard his key in the door.

He didn't come to find me immediately. He never did. I gave him time to settle, to pour himself a scotch, to check his messages. Then I took a deep breath and headed toward the private dining room where we sometimes shared dinner when he had time for me.

The door was half-open. I slowed my steps, my hand instinctively moving to my stomach. Through the gap, I could see into the room—and then I saw him.

Collin was on one knee before a woman I recognized as Anastasia Long, a former socialite who had been circling his orbit for months. In his hand gleamed a Cartier ring, its diamond catching the light. I froze, my thumbnail digging into my palm.

"This is everything I've promised you," his voice carried clearly through the door. "A name, a future, my protection. You'll never want for anything again."

Anastasia's delicate hand trembled as she accepted the ring, her eyes wide with practiced vulnerability. "Collin, I don't know what to say. I never expected—"

"You deserve the world," he interrupted, his voice carrying that particular tenderness I'd never heard directed at me. "And I want to give it to you. Every part of it. Including a family."

My breath caught. A family.

"But I'm not ready to..." Anastasia's voice dropped to a whisper. "The thought of pregnancy terrifies me. My constitution is so delicate..."

"I've thought of that," Collin said, his tone shifting to something clinical, something I recognized from boardrooms and business deals. "Julissa is pregnant. She's been useful for that, at least. The child will be born, and then you'll raise it as your own. You'll never have to endure any of the unpleasantness."

The world tilted beneath my feet. I pressed my thumbnail deeper into my palm, feeling the skin break, the sharp sting grounding me as my entire world collapsed. Not once in ten years had he spoken about me with such cold calculation. Not once had he looked at me the way he was looking at Anastasia—like she was precious, worth protecting, worth building a life around.

I backed away from the door, silent as always, and returned to our bedroom. The test was still in my pocket, but the hope it had carried felt like ash in my mouth. I sank to the floor, my back against the bed, and something inside me—something that had been bending for years—finally, irrevocably broke.

I sat there in perfect silence as the truth crystallized in my mind: I would never be more than a vessel to him. Never a partner. Never a wife. Never even a person worth acknowledging.

When the penthouse fell quiet hours later, I slipped out. Three blocks away, I purchased a burner phone from a bodega with cash I'd been secretly saving. My hands shook as I dialed a number Indy had once mentioned in passing—a back channel to Jace Oliver, Collin's greatest rival.

"This is Julissa Arnold," I whispered when the line connected. "I need to disappear. I have nothing to offer in return. Just tell me if you can help."

The response came within the hour, simple and unhesitating: "Tell me where and when."

The next morning, I checked into a private clinic under a false name. The procedure was quick, clinical. In the recovery room, I wept silently, alone with the weight of my decision. No one held my hand. No one told me it would be okay. No one knew I was there at all.

Before leaving, I made one final request to the clinic staff: preserve the embryonic remains and deliver them to Collin Henderson's corporate office with a typed note—"This is what you would have given her. I'm returning it to you."

I returned to the penthouse before dawn. Collin was asleep, oblivious to the fact that I had been gone. Oblivious to what I had done. Oblivious to the fact that the woman he had used for a decade was already gone, even as she slipped back into the bed beside him.
