My Husband Planned My Hysterectomy for His Mistress
Chapter 5
The call came from a number I didn't recognize.
I answered anyway. These days I answered everything.
"Ms. Spencer, this is David Chen from Apex Forensics." His voice was professional. Careful. "We've confirmed the source of the prosthetic belly. Theatrical supplier in Newark. They keep records. We have receipts, dates, everything. The ultrasound images trace back to a radiologist who lost his license two years ago. He's willing to testify in exchange for immunity."
I sat down at my kitchen table. Looked at the folder already sitting there. The one Dr. Webb had given me yesterday. Chain of custody forms. Lab analysis of the IV bag. Security footage timestamps.
"Send everything to my attorney," I said.
"Already done. There's one more thing. We found communications between Raina Mendoza and her brother discussing the ritual. Text messages. Very explicit about the intent to cause harm. I'm emailing those now."
"Thank you."
I hung up. Stared at the folder.
Five years of my life, reduced to evidence.
I opened it one more time. Reviewed each document. The forged medical records. The theatrical receipts. The text messages where Raina called me "the obstacle" and Julius called the lashing "performance art."
I closed the folder. Put it in my bag.
Then I drove to the hospital.
---
My mother looked the same. Peaceful. Still.
I sat in the chair beside her bed. The one I'd sat in every night for weeks. The vinyl was cracked. Comfortable in a worn-out way.
I pulled out the novel. *Rebecca*. We were on the last chapter.
I opened it. Found my place. Started reading.
My voice filled the quiet room. The machines beeped softly. A nurse passed in the hallway. The world kept moving.
I finished the chapter. Closed the book. Set it on the table.
"That's the end," I said. "We made it through."
I looked at her face. The lines around her eyes. Her hands resting on the blanket.
"I need to tell you something," I said quietly. "Tomorrow night is the gala. The thirtieth anniversary. You and Dad were supposed to be there. You were supposed to give the speech."
I took her hand. It was warm. Alive.
"I'm going instead. I'm taking back the company. All of it. I have the Founder's Seal. I have the evidence. I have people who are ready to stand with me."
My throat tightened.
"I should have done this years ago. I should have stopped enduring and started fighting. I'm sorry it took me this long. I'm sorry I let him hurt me. I'm sorry I let them hurt you."
The heart monitor beeped. Steady. Constant.
"But I'm finished now. With all of it. Tomorrow, I'm going to stand on that stage and I'm going to take back everything he stole. And then I'm going to come back here and tell you all about it."
I leaned forward. Kissed her hand.
"I love you, Mom."
I stood. Straightened my back. The scars pulled. I didn't flinch.
I walked out.
---
Holden called me that night.
I stared at the screen. Let it ring three times. Then answered.
"What."
"We need to talk about the gala," he said. His voice was tight. Irritated. "Some of the board members aren't responding. Serena Chow canceled on me. The overseas partner I was supposed to meet with went silent. What's going on?"
"I don't know," I said. "Maybe they're busy."
"Don't play games with me, Lillie. If you're trying to—"
"I'm not trying anything. The divorce finalizes in six days. After that, you'll never have to think about me again."
Silence.
"Fine," he said finally. "I'll handle it myself."
He hung up.
I set the phone down. Looked out the window at the city lights.
He had no idea.
None of them did.
---
Vance met me in the hotel lobby the next morning.
He was wearing a dark suit. Perfectly tailored. He looked like he'd stepped out of a boardroom. Calm. Steady. Unshakable.
He handed me a garment bag.
"The gown," he said.
I took it. Felt the weight of the fabric through the bag.
"The AV team is confirmed," he said. "They'll have the screens ready. The forensic accountants will be in the back room if anyone has technical questions. Serena has the four board members. Security knows the plan."
I nodded.
"And you," I said quietly. "Where will you be?"
"Wherever you need me."
I looked at him. Really looked. The way he stood. The way he watched me without demanding anything.
"Did you keep them?" I asked. "The boarding passes."
He went still. Surprised.
"Yes," he said finally.
"All of them?"
"All of them."
I held his gaze. Something passed between us. Something I didn't have words for yet.
"Thank you," I said.
He nodded once.
I picked up the garment bag. Turned toward the elevator.
"Lillie."
I looked back.
"You're going to be extraordinary tonight," he said quietly.
I didn't answer. Just smiled. Small. Real.
Then I went upstairs to get ready.
