Chapter 2

Bradley set his wine glass down and leaned back in his chair. He looked at me the way he looked at junior analysts who'd missed a deadline — patient, almost pitying.

"Roselyn," he said, his voice controlled and reasonable, the one he used in conference rooms. "I think you're being emotional right now. Maybe we should talk about this privately."

I didn't sit down.

"I'm not emotional," I said. "I'm done."

Jasmine shifted in her seat, her hand moving to rest on the table near Bradley's. She didn't touch him, not with everyone watching, but the gesture was there. A claim.

Bradley's jaw tightened. He glanced at his mother, then back at me. When he spoke again, the patience was gone.

"Fine," he said. "You want to do this here? Let's do it." He gestured at the table, at the half-eaten duck, at Haisley sitting frozen beside me. "You want to walk away from this family? From everything I've given you? Go ahead. But you're not walking away with a dime."

He leaned forward, his voice dropping into something colder.

"You're going to repay me, Roselyn. Every cent I spent keeping a roof over your head for six years. Every grocery bill. Every doctor's visit. Every single thing I paid for while you sat at home doing nothing."

Carol's husband stared at his plate. Carol's face had gone white.

"Bradley," she said quietly.

He ignored her.

"You think you can just throw this back in my face?" he continued. "I supported you. I took care of you. I gave you a life. And this is how you repay me? By trying to destroy this family on Christmas Eve?"

Josephine set down her fork with a sharp clink. She looked at me like I was something she'd scraped off her shoe.

"Roselyn," she said, her voice cold and clipped. "I don't know what's gotten into you, but you need to think very carefully about what you're doing."

She gestured at Haisley, who sat rigid in her chair, her hands folded tight in her lap.

"Think about your daughter. Think about what you're doing to her. You want to rip this family apart over some holiday tantrum? You want her to grow up remembering the night her mother destroyed everything?"

Jasmine leaned forward, her expression soft with concern. Her hand finally closed over Bradley's.

"Roselyn, honey," she said gently. "Maybe you just need some time to calm down. This is a big decision. You don't want to say something you'll regret."

I looked at her. At the pearl earrings. At the soft pink sweater. At the hand resting on my husband's like it belonged there.

Then I reached for the canvas bag beside my chair.

The bag everyone had ignored because I always carried Haisley's things — crayons, snacks, a change of clothes in case she spilled something. No one questioned it. No one ever did.

I pulled out the spreadsheet.

It was thick. Printed on standard copy paper, three-hole-punched, held together with metal brads. The tabs along the right edge were color-coded. Green for household expenses. Blue for medical. Red for transfers I wasn't supposed to notice.

I set it on the table between the wine glasses and the candlesticks. The pages made a soft thud against the linen.

Bradley stared at it.

"What is that?" he said.

I slid it toward him across the table. It stopped just short of his plate.

"Six years," I said. "Every dollar in. Every dollar out."

His hand didn't move to touch it.

I flipped open the cover page. The first tab was labeled "Household Budget." Rows and columns. Dates. Amounts. Every grocery receipt. Every gas station fill-up. Every piece of clothing I bought for Haisley at Target because the department stores Josephine shopped at were never in the budget Bradley gave me.

"You want to talk about what you spent on me?" I said. "Let's talk about it."

I turned to the second tab. "Medical Expenses." My finger traced down the column to a date three years ago. November fourteenth.

"This is the night Haisley spiked a fever of 104," I said. My voice stayed flat. "I called you at eleven pm and asked for money to take her to the emergency room. You told me to give her Tylenol and stop being dramatic."

Bradley's face went still.

"My mother wired me three hundred dollars at midnight," I continued. "It's right here. The transfer cleared at 12:47 am. I have the hospital bill. I have the discharge papers. I have everything."

Josephine's mouth opened slightly.

I turned to the third tab. The red one.

"And this," I said, "is every Venmo payment you made to Jasmine Fernandez over the last eighteen months. Rent. Utilities. Furniture. Dinners."

I looked up at Jasmine. Her face had drained of color.

"You said you wanted to know what I've been busy with," I said. "I've been busy keeping receipts."

The table went silent. No forks. No wine glasses. Just the faint hiss of the candles burning down.

Bradley reached for the spreadsheet. His hand was shaking.
