Chapter 3

I turned the page. The paper whispered against the silence.

"January," I said. "Haisley needed winter boots. She was wearing sneakers in the snow because she'd outgrown last year's pair."

My finger traced the line.

"I asked you for eighty dollars. You said we were tight that month. You told me to check the clearance racks."

I looked up at Bradley. His hand rested on the edge of the spreadsheet but he didn't open it.

"That same week," I continued, "you transferred twenty-eight hundred dollars to Jasmine Fernandez. The memo said 'weekend trip.'"

Jasmine's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I flipped ahead. Another red tab.

"March. My car broke down on the Merritt Parkway. I called you from the shoulder. You told me to figure it out because you had a meeting."

Bradley's jaw tightened.

"I borrowed money from my mother to get it towed. Two hundred dollars. It's right here."

I turned the page.

"That same day, you paid Jasmine's rent. Thirty-two hundred dollars. Tribeca studio. Exposed brick."

Josephine's hand moved to her throat. Carol stared at her plate like she could disappear into it.

"May," I said. "Haisley's preschool sent a notice. We owed for two months. You said you'd handle it. They called me three weeks later threatening to unenroll her."

I met Bradley's eyes across the table.

"I paid it with birthday money my father sent me. Seven hundred dollars. I have the check stub."

My finger moved down the column.

"Same month. You sent Jasmine fifteen hundred dollars. The memo said 'just because.'"

Bradley pushed back from the table slightly. His chair scraped the hardwood.

"Roselyn—"

"I'm not done."

I turned to the page I'd marked with a yellow sticky note. The one I'd looked at so many times the corner had started to crease.

My voice stayed flat. I didn't trust it to do anything else.

"November fourteenth. Three years ago."

Haisley shifted beside me. I felt her hand find mine under the table.

"Haisley spiked a fever of 104.3 at nine pm. I gave her Tylenol. I gave her a lukewarm bath. By eleven pm she was shaking so hard I couldn't hold her still."

The room was so quiet I could hear the candles burning.

"I called you. You were in White Plains at a work dinner. I told you I needed money for the emergency room. You said—"

I stopped. Swallowed.

"You said to give her another Tylenol and stop being dramatic."

Bradley's face had gone blank. The way it did when a compliance audit went bad and he needed to control the room.

"My mother wired me three hundred dollars at 12:47 am. I have the bank record. I have the hospital discharge papers. Viral infection. They gave her fluids and monitored her for four hours. She was fine."

I turned the page.

"That same night, at 10:16 pm, you transferred fifteen hundred dollars to Jasmine Fernandez. The memo said 'you deserve it.'"

I looked up at Jasmine. Her hand had slipped off Bradley's. It rested on her lap now, fingers curled tight.

"She bought a handbag," I said. "Celine. She posted it on Instagram three days later."

No one moved.

Bradley reached for his wine glass. His hand was shaking. He took a long drink and set it down with too much force. The stem nearly cracked.

When he spoke, his voice had that boardroom control again. Measured. Calm. Over-explained.

"Those were loans," he said. "Jasmine was going through a hard time. A rough breakup. She needed help getting back on her feet. I was helping an old friend. That's what friends do."

He gestured at the spreadsheet like it was evidence of something reasonable.

"I documented everything," he continued. "Every transfer has a memo. It's all accounted for. She was going to pay me back. It was temporary. She just needed—"

He stopped himself. Too many words. He was giving me too many words.

Jasmine's voice cut in, soft and careful.

"It's true," she said. Her hand moved to the table, fingers spread like she was steadying herself. "I was in a really bad place. Bradley was just being kind. He's always been kind. It wasn't—"

She paused. Swallowed.

"It wasn't anything inappropriate."

The sweetness in her voice had cracked at the edges. Just slightly. Just enough.

I looked at her across the candlelight. At the pearl earrings. At the cashmere sweater that cost more than my grocery budget for two months.

"A loan," I said.

"Yes."

"For eighteen months."

Jasmine's fingers curled against the linen.

"I—yes. I needed time."

Bradley cleared his throat. His hand moved to hers. This time he didn't care who saw.

"She's paying me back," he said. "In installments. It's all—"

"Documented?" I finished.

He nodded.

"Good," I said.

I reached into the canvas bag and pulled out the second folder.
