Chapter 1

The Daniels house sat at the end of a long driveway lined with hedges trimmed into perfect right angles. Every window glowed warm yellow against the December dark. I pulled up in the secondhand Honda my mother had given me two years ago, the one she'd claimed they were selling anyway. Haisley sat strapped in the back seat, her hands folded in her lap the way she always did when we came here.

"Ready, baby?" I asked.

She nodded without speaking. She knew how to be quiet here.

I grabbed the canvas bag from the passenger seat and slung it over my shoulder. It was heavier than it looked. Inside were three manila folders, a laptop, and six years of my life reduced to spreadsheets and photographs. I'd printed everything twice. Once for Bradley. Once for his lawyer, if it came to that.

The front door opened before I knocked. Josephine Rogers stood framed in the light, her hair sprayed into a helmet, her silk blouse buttoned to the throat. She looked me over the way she always did, like she was checking produce for bruises.

"You're late," she said.

"Traffic on the Hutchinson," I replied.

She stepped aside without warmth. Haisley slipped past her grandmother without waiting for a hug. There wouldn't be one.

Inside, the dining room table was set like a magazine spread. White linen. Silver candlesticks. The good china Josephine only brought out when she wanted to remind everyone what the Daniels family was supposed to represent. At the head of the table sat Bradley, phone in one hand, wine glass in the other. He didn't look up when I walked in.

His younger sister Carol was there with her husband, both of them already seated and looking uncomfortable. And at Bradley's right hand, directly across from where I always sat, was Jasmine Fernandez.

She wore a soft pink sweater and pearl earrings. Her hair fell in perfect waves. When she saw me, she smiled like we were old friends.

"Roselyn! It's so good to see you," she said warmly.

I didn't return the smile. I set the canvas bag down beside my chair and pulled Haisley onto my lap. Bradley finally glanced up from his phone.

"You're holding up dinner," he said.

I didn't apologize.

Josephine took her seat at the opposite end of the table and rang a small silver bell. A catering server I didn't recognize appeared with the first course. Butternut squash soup in white bowls. Josephine lifted her spoon and everyone followed.

The conversation started safe. Carol's husband talked about his firm's holiday bonus. Josephine asked Jasmine about her new apartment in Tribeca, the one Bradley's Venmo transfers had been funding for eighteen months. Jasmine described the exposed brick and the skyline view with the enthusiasm of someone who believed she'd earned it.

"It must be so nice," Josephine said, "to have your own space. Independence is so important for young women."

I stirred my soup and said nothing.

Bradley checked his email twice during the first course. Jasmine touched his arm once, leaning close to whisper something that made him smile. It was a small smile, private, the kind he used to give me.

The server cleared the bowls and brought out the main course. Roasted duck. Rosemary potatoes. Green beans almondine. Josephine carved the duck herself, a ritual she insisted on every year. She served Bradley first, then Jasmine, then Carol and her husband. Haisley and I came last.

"Haisley, sit up straight," Josephine said without looking at her.

My daughter straightened in her chair.

Jasmine speared a green bean and glanced at me across the table. "How have you been, Roselyn? You look tired."

I met her eyes. "I've been busy."

"Oh?" She tilted her head, all concern. "Anything I can help with?"

I thought about the photograph in the manila folder. The one taken outside the Crosby Street Hotel last April. Bradley's hand on the small of her back. Her head tipped against his shoulder.

"No," I said. "I've got it covered."

The table fell into polite chewing. Forks on china. The clink of wine glasses. Bradley finished his duck and poured himself another glass of red. Josephine launched into a story about a charity gala she was chairing in the spring, the kind of event where appearances mattered more than the cause.

I waited until the server cleared the main course.

Then I set down my fork and stood.

The sound of my chair scraping back cut through the room like a knife. Everyone looked up. Bradley's wine glass paused halfway to his mouth.

I looked at him across the candlelight and said, "I want a divorce."

The words came out flat and steady, like I was reading a grocery list. No tremor. No hesitation.

Josephine's serving spoon froze above the dessert she'd been about to plate. Carol's mouth opened slightly. Her husband looked down at his lap.

Bradley set his wine glass down with slow, deliberate control.

"Excuse me?" he said.

I didn't repeat myself. I reached for the canvas bag.
