Chapter 2

The first night, I screamed until my throat hurt.

No one opened the door.

The east wing had once been my favorite part of the Lancaster house. My bedroom faced the garden. A narrow sitting room connected it to the library where Damien and I had studied for exams. After we married, my parents moved to a smaller home downtown and let us keep the house.

I had never imagined the locks could be turned against me.

Breakfast arrived on a tray at eight. Mrs. Doyle, the housekeeper who had worked for my family for many years, pushed it through the door without meeting my eyes.

“Please call my mother,” I said.

“Mr. Hale says you need quiet.”

“My husband is keeping me here against my will.”

Her fingers tightened around the tray. “I am sorry, Miss Evelyn.”

“Then help me.”

A security guard appeared behind her. Mrs. Doyle stepped away. The door closed.

For three days, Damien visited every evening. He brought clean clothes, prenatal vitamins, and updates about the baby as if nothing had ever happened.

“Dr. Patel wants another scan next week,” he said on the third night.

“I want to speak to her myself.”

“You will.”

“When?”

“When you stop taking it out on Sienna.”

I stared at him from the window seat. I had once known every small change in his face. I had built a language out of his silences.

Now that language felt like something I had invented to comfort myself.

“Let me call my parents,” I said.

“I told them you need rest.”

“You told them without letting me speak.”

“They upset you. Every conversation with your father becomes an argument about the company.”

“My father has never locked me in a room.”

Damien set the vitamins on the table. “Take those after breakfast.”

He left without touching me.

On the fourth morning, Sienna brought the tray.

She wore cream trousers and one of Damien’s blue shirts. Her hair was pulled into a careless knot that had probably taken forty minutes to arrange.

“Where is Mrs. Doyle?” I asked.

“I gave her the day off.”

“You do not employ her.”

Sienna smiled. “Things are changing.”

She placed a glass of orange juice beside the vitamins. “Damien asked me to make sure you take these.”

I picked up the bottle.

“I would rather die.”

Her smile disappeared. “Do not say that. People might believe you.”

Cold moved through me.

She leaned against the table. “He stayed with me last night. In case you were wondering.”

“I wasn’t.”

“He could not sleep. He kept asking whether the baby would look like him.”

I looked past her at the open door. One guard stood at the end of the corridor.

Sienna followed my gaze. “You will not get far.”

“You were my best friend.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

For a moment, something unguarded crossed her face.

Then she laughed softly. “I was your project. The poor girl you dressed up and introduced to the right people. Do you know what everyone called me? Evelyn Lancaster’s little discovery.”

“I helped because I loved you.”

“You helped because being generous made you feel good.” She pushed the vitamins toward me. “Now you know what it feels like to be the one without choices.”

After she left, I poured the juice into a potted fern and hid the pills beneath the mattress.

The bleeding began that afternoon.

At first it was only a brown streak. Dr. Patel had warned me that light spotting could happen, so I forced myself to breathe. I drank water. I lay on my left side. I pressed the call button beside the bed.

No one came.

An hour later, the cramps started.

I reached the landline in the sitting room, but it had no signal. I hit the door with both fists.

“Call Dr. Patel!”

The guard answered from outside. “Mr. Hale has been informed.”

“Then call an ambulance.”

“He said to wait for the private doctor.”

Blood ran warm down my thigh.

I didn't remember how long I begged. I gripped the edge of the bathtub and saying, “Please,” to a child too small to hear me.

Then silence came after the worst pain passed.

Mrs. Doyle found me after dark. She screamed once, then called emergency services despite the guard trying to stop her.

At the hospital, Dr. Patel held my hand while the ultrasound nurse turned the screen away.

“I am so sorry,” she said.

I had imagined hearing the heartbeat the following week. I had imagined Damien hearing it too and becoming the man I had thought he was.

There was no heartbeat.

Damien arrived after midnight in a tuxedo. I remembered Sienna’s movie premiere had been tonight. A smear of foundation marked his collar.

He came toward the bed, but Dr. Patel blocked him.

“She needed medical attention hours ago,” she said. “Who made the decision to delay?”

“I was told the bleeding was minor.”

“By whom?”

His eyes shifted toward the door. Sienna waited outside in a black gown, surrounded by two assistants.

Dr. Patel looked at me. “Do you want him here?”

“No.”

It was the first decision anyone had allowed me to make in days.

Damien’s face changed. “Evelyn.”

“Get out.”

He obeyed because there were nurses watching.

The next morning, he returned with a folder.

He placed printed pages on my blanket. Search results for miscarriage medication. A receipt from an online pharmacy. Messages sent from an account bearing my name.

Sienna stood behind him, dressed in gray and looking appropriately devastated.

“She found this on the tablet in your room,” Damien said.

I looked at the pharmacy order. The delivery address was the house. The account used an email I had abandoned two years earlier.

“This is fake.”

“You said you would rather die than have my child,” Sienna whispered.

“I said that to you because you brought me an opened bottle of pills.”

Damien’s eyes snapped to her.

For half a second, she looked frightened. Then she began crying.

“I was trying to help.”

I looked at Damien. He stared at the forged receipt until his anger became easier than doubt.

“You killed our child to punish me.”

Something inside me went quiet.

I removed my wedding ring. My fingers had swollen, and it hurt to pull over the knuckle. When it came free, I placed it on top of the folder.

“I begged you for help,” I said. “You left me bleeding on a bathroom floor while you stood beside her on a red carpet.”

His face went pale.

“You do not get to call that baby yours.”

I was discharged two days later. Damien took me back to the same locked room, claiming the house was safer than a hotel.

That night, feverish and unable to sleep, I remembered the old service door behind the library shelves. Damien and I had used it as children to sneak into the kitchen.

The latch still worked.

I moved slowly through the narrow passage, one hand against the wall. At the end, I entered my father’s old study.

The room smelled of leather and dust. Damien had converted most of it into storage, but my father’s steel safe remained behind a framed map. The combination was my birthday.

Inside were company deeds, old passports, and a sealed envelope marked VICTOR HALE—ACCIDENT FILE.

I sat on the floor and opened it.

The police report listed Victor as the driver. His blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. Witness statements said my father had tried to take the keys. The mechanical inspection found no defect, no sabotage, no evidence of a struggle caused by Henry.

There was also a letter from my father to the family attorney.

Victor made a terrible decision, but Damien has already lost both parents. I will not let one night define what the boy believes about his father. Margaret and I will bring him home. If he ever asks, I will tell him when he is old enough to survive the truth.

My hands shook.

My father had not killed Victor. He had protected Victor’s name and raised Victor’s son.

A floorboard creaked behind me.

Sienna stood in the doorway.

Her gaze dropped to the report in my hands.

Then she quietly closed the door.
