Chapter 3

Sienna held out her hand.

“Give me the file.”

I folded the police report against my chest. “Did Damien know?”

Her eyes flicked away.

That was enough.

“When did he see it?” I asked.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“You are a better actress on television.”

She stepped closer. “You are sick, Evelyn. You lost a baby two days ago. If anyone finds you here, they will send you somewhere you cannot embarrass Damien again.”

I reached for the desk phone.

Sienna knocked it from my hand. The receiver hit the floor. I tried to move past her, but my knees weakened. She caught my arm, and pain tore through my abdomen.

“Do not touch me.”

“Then stop making everything difficult.”

She twisted the papers from my hands. I grabbed the envelope and pulled. It ripped down the middle, scattering photographs across the carpet.

One showed the crushed front of Victor’s car. Another showed the empty bottle found beneath the driver’s seat.

Sienna stared at them.

“He knew,” I said. “That is why you are afraid.”

She slapped me.

The blow sent me into the edge of the desk. I tasted blood.

“You had everything,” she hissed. “You never even had to ask. Men loved you. Your parents worshiped you. Every room opened before you reached the door.”

“And you think sleeping with my husband made you equal to me?”

Her face tightened.

I hated how weak my body felt, but weakness was not surrender. While she gathered the reports, I slid my father’s letter beneath my sweater.

Sienna called the guard. “Mrs. Hale is confused again.”

The guard carried me back to the east wing.

That afternoon, a private doctor I had never met examined me for less than five minutes. Sienna stood in the room the entire time.

“She has a fever,” he said.

“She was treated at the hospital,” Sienna replied.

“She needs blood work and probably imaging.”

Damien entered as he packed his bag. “Can it wait until tomorrow?”

The doctor hesitated. “I would not recommend waiting.”

“Arrange a private admission in the morning,” Damien said.

I tried to sit up. “Call Dr. Patel.”

His gaze met mine. For one moment, I saw fear in it.

Then Sienna touched his arm. “She will tell the police we locked her up.”

The doctor looked sharply between us.

Damien lowered his voice. “You will be paid for tonight. Leave the medication and go.”

The doctor left without looking at me.

Damien waited until the door closed. “Why were you in the study?”

“Why did you lie about your father?”

“I did not.”

“You saw the report.”

His expression did not change quickly enough.

I laughed, and the sound turned into a cough. “You knew.”

“I saw documents your father controlled. That is not the same as the truth.”

“The police controlled the blood test.”

“My father is dead. Henry wrote the story.”

“You need him to be guilty.” I pressed a hand to my burning forehead. “Otherwise you have to admit you destroyed me for nothing.”

Damien came close to the bed. “You should rest.”

“Let me go.”

“You are not well enough.”

“Then take me to a hospital.”

Silence stretched between us.

He turned away first.

Near sunset, voices rose downstairs. My mother’s voice cut through the house with the force I remembered from boardrooms.

“I am not leaving without seeing my daughter.”

I forced myself out of bed. The room swayed.

Sienna entered carrying a glass of water and two white tablets. “Your parents are here.”

“I heard.”

“Damien told them you are sleeping.”

I moved toward the door. She blocked it.

“Get out of my way.”

“You can barely stand.”

“Then they should see me.”

She set the glass down. “Take these first.”

“No.”

Her hand closed around my jaw. I struck her wrist. The tablets flew beneath the dresser.

Sienna’s voice changed. All sweetness vanished. “If you walk downstairs looking like this, they will ask questions. If they ask questions, Damien loses the company. I lose my career. You think either of us will allow that?”

“Either of you?”

She glanced toward the hallway, then spoke quickly. “Your fever gets worse. You return to the hospital too late. The doctors say it was a complication after the miscarriage. Damien tells everyone you refused treatment because you were distraught. It is tragic, but it is believable.”

The calmness in her voice frightened me more than shouting would have.

“You are planning to let me die.”

“I am planning for every possibility.”

From downstairs, a man said, “If Mrs. Hale is too ill to come down, call an ambulance.”

I did not recognize the voice.

Sienna did.

“Julian Cross,” she muttered.

The name pulled at an old memory. Julian had been a young associate at my father’s law firm years ago. He had left to work as a prosecutor, then opened his own corporate litigation practice. My father trusted him because Julian had never learned how to flatter anyone.

I grabbed the water glass and threw it at the wall.

It shattered with a crack loud enough to carry through the house.

I screamed.

Sienna lunged for me. I backed away and pulled the bedside table over between us. She slipped, hit her knee, and cursed.

Footsteps thundered down the corridor.

The guard shouted that no one was permitted inside. My mother shouted back. Then Julian’s voice came, controlled and very near.

“Move away from that door. Emergency services are on the line, and I am documenting your refusal to provide access.”

The lock clicked.

Damien entered first. He looked from Sienna on the floor to the blood on my lip.

“What happened?”

“She attacked me,” Sienna said.

I tried to speak, but the room tilted.

Damien took one step toward me.

A tall man in a dark coat pushed past him. Julian’s hair was damp from the rain. His face had sharpened since I last saw him, but his eyes were exactly as I remembered—gray, steady, and impossible to distract.

He did not touch me immediately.

“Evelyn,” he said. “Can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to leave this house?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone prevent you from seeking medical care?”

“Yes.”

Damien seized his shoulder. “She is confused.”

Julian removed Damien’s hand. “Then a doctor will determine that.”

Paramedics came through the doorway behind him. My mother cried when she saw me. My father gripped the frame as if his injured leg could no longer hold him.

Sienna began explaining too loudly. Damien ordered everyone out. No one listened.

As the paramedics lifted me onto a stretcher, I caught Julian’s sleeve.

“The study,” I whispered. “Accident file. She took it.”

“I’ll handle it.”

“No.” My fingers tightened. “Do not handle me. Help me do it.”

Something shifted in his face—not pity, not surprise. Respect.

“All right,” he said. “We do it your way.”

At the hospital, Dr. Patel found signs of an untreated complication from the miscarriage and sedatives in my system that she had not prescribed. She said another twelve hours without treatment could have become dangerous.

A police officer took my statement. Damien’s attorney arrived before I finished and tried to describe the locked door as a private family safety measure.

Julian asked him to leave.

The officer could not arrest Damien that night. The house belonged to both of us. Damien claimed I had been medically unstable and that security had acted on advice from a doctor. Sienna denied touching my medicine. The private doctor stopped answering calls.

But for the first time, their version was not the only one in the room.

Near dawn, my parents went home to change. Julian remained in the chair beside the window, reading every page the nurse brought him.

“You should sleep,” I said.

“So should you.”

“I keep seeing the locked door.”

He closed the file. “Then keep your eyes open until you feel safe enough to close them.”

He stayed.

I watched morning spread across the hospital wall.

Damien had wanted me silent, frightened, and dependent.

I was frightened.

But I was no longer silent.

And I would never depend on him again.
