Chapter 2

The wall between us was thin.

I heard his voice before I was fully awake. Low, even, the way he sounded when he was running a department meeting. No urgency. No grief. Just Kellan on the phone, doing what Kellan did—managing things.

'The kidneys are non-viable,' he said. 'We've confirmed that. But the heart is a strong match. If we move forward tonight, the window holds.'

I lay still.

'Leila's boy is stable enough for the procedure. Dr. Wren has reviewed the imaging. We're aligned.'

I stopped breathing.

Leila's boy.

I stared at the ceiling. The same ceiling I had been staring at since I woke up. The same dim light. The same cold antiseptic smell. My daughter was somewhere in this building, in a room I had not been allowed to see, and my husband was on the other side of a wall talking about her heart like it was a spare part.

Leila's boy.

His boy.

I knew. I knew the way you know something your body understood before your mind caught up. The affair I had never let myself fully believe in. The child I had never known existed. The math was simple and it was monstrous and it was already done.

I pulled the IV line out of my arm.

It hurt less than I expected. Or maybe I couldn't feel it. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and the floor came up to meet me wrong—too far, too cold—and I grabbed the rail and stood anyway. The gown was soaked through on one side. I didn't look down.

I walked out of the room.

The corridor was bright after the dimness. I had to stop for a moment, one hand flat on the wall, while the light stabilized. A passing orderly stared. I kept moving.

I found him outside the NICU.

He was standing exactly as I had imagined him—composed, phone lowered now, already finished with whatever came next on his list. He looked up when he heard me coming. His expression didn't change.

That was the thing I will never forget. His expression didn't change.

'Aviana.' Just my name. Flat.

'Tell me I heard it wrong.' My voice didn't sound like mine. 'Tell me that wasn't you. Tell me you weren't just—'

'You need to go back to your room.'

'She's your daughter.' The words tore coming out. 'She's your daughter and you're going to take her heart and give it to—'

'Keep your voice down.'

'She's alive.' I was screaming. I didn't care. 'She is alive right now and you are standing here like you're scheduling a board meeting—'

He looked at me. That was the worst part. He actually looked at me, the way you look at something that has become inconvenient. A spill. A delay. He looked at me bleeding through my sutures in the corridor outside the room where our daughter was dying, and I watched him make a calculation.

He took my arm.

His grip was the same grip. Firm. Warm. The same hand that had held mine this morning when I was still a woman who trusted him.

He didn't speak. He just walked, and I was too weak to do anything but be moved. Down a side corridor. Away from the light and the nurses and the sound of monitors. The walls changed—utility gray, no windows. A service hall.

He stopped at a door. Metal handle, no sign. He opened it.

Cold air hit me like a wall. The room was dark and smelled of industrial plastic and something chemical underneath. Shelving units. Supply boxes stacked to the ceiling.

He put me inside.

I turned around. He was already pulling the door closed. I could see his face in the narrowing gap—still calm, still that particular calm I had spent four years trusting—and I reached out, but the door was already shut.

The lock clicked.

I stood in the dark for a moment. Just stood there. Then my legs stopped working and I went down, and the concrete came up hard against my knees and I didn't get up again.

The cold was immediate and total. It moved through the wet gown like it had been waiting.

I don't know how long I stayed there. Long enough for the shaking to start. Long enough for the edges of things to go soft.

I put my hand in my pocket.

The phone screen was cracked. A long diagonal fracture across the glass. Seven percent battery, the corner said. Seven percent.

I opened my contacts.

The name sat there. I hadn't opened it in three years. I had told myself I never would again. I had been so certain.

My hands were shaking too badly to type properly. I deleted four attempts. The screen blurred.

I steadied my hands against my knee and typed it again.

*Dad. Help me. Snyder Memorial. I'm dying.*

I pressed send.

The screen went black.

The cold kept coming.

I pressed my back against the shelving and pulled my knees to my chest and I thought about her. Whatever she looked like. Whatever small, furious, alive thing she had been in the moment before I lost consciousness. I thought about her, and I stayed awake, and I waited.
