Chapter 3

I don't remember the door opening.

I remember the cold. I remember the concrete under my cheek. I remember thinking, distantly, that the floor was wet, and that the wet was mine, and that I should probably care about that more than I did.

Then light. Voices. Hands—not Kellan's hands, different hands, purposeful and quick. Someone said my name. Someone pressed something to my neck. Someone said *she's losing too much* and someone else said *I know, move.*

I tried to open my eyes. I managed it for a second. A man I didn't recognize was crouched over me in a dark coat, sleeves pushed to his elbows, working with the focused calm of someone who does this for a living. Behind him, in the doorway, two men in black stood with their shoulders squared and their eyes on the corridor.

And behind them—

He looked older. That was the first thing I registered. The temples had gone fully gray. The lines around his mouth were deeper. He was standing very still in the way that powerful men stand still when they are feeling something they will not show—spine straight, jaw set, hands at his sides.

Royce Medina. My father.

He was looking at me like I was the only thing in the room.

I closed my eyes again. I heard rotors somewhere above the building. I felt myself lifted. I let it happen.

---

The private facility smelled different from Snyder Memorial. Warmer. Quieter. No institutional hum, no distant PA system. Just clean air and the soft rhythm of monitors that someone had turned down to a considerate volume.

I woke to gray light through tall windows. My father was in the chair beside the bed. He wasn't asleep. He was just sitting there, one hand resting near mine on the blanket, watching me with an expression I had never seen on him before. It took me a moment to name it.

Guilt. Grief. Both.

'Dad,' I said. My voice came out like something scraped off the floor.

He leaned forward. His hand covered mine.

'She's gone.' He said it quietly. Directly. The way he always delivered things he knew I needed to hear without softening. 'They removed life support before we reached her. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Aviana.'

I looked at the ceiling.

The monitors kept their soft rhythm. The gray light didn't change.

Then something in my chest cracked open, and I cried. Not the quiet kind. The kind that comes from somewhere below language, below thought—the kind that takes your whole body and doesn't ask permission. I cried until I couldn't breathe and then I kept going, and my father held my hand and did not move and did not look away, and he didn't say anything else, because there was nothing else to say.

It was the only time. I made sure of that.

---

The days that followed were very quiet.

I slept. I healed. I let the doctors do what they needed to do.

Royce stayed. He worked from the room sometimes—calls, documents, the low murmur of empire maintenance—but he was always there when I opened my eyes. We didn't talk about the years between us. Not yet. Some things require more ground than a hospital room can hold.

On the fourth day, a man in a dark suit came in and set a folder on the table beside my bed. He nodded to my father and left without speaking.

I looked at it.

'You don't have to read it now,' Royce said.

'Yes I do.'

He didn't argue.

I read every page.

The affair had started before our wedding. Before the ring, before the proposal, before the first dinner where I had sat across from Leila Castillo and felt nothing but the ordinary discomfort of meeting a grieving woman I didn't know how to reach. It had been running the entire length of my marriage like a second current beneath the surface—hidden, steady, sustaining something else entirely.

Scott Snyder had grown suspicious. He had started asking questions. The brake lines on his car had been tampered with using a method that required specific technical knowledge. Kellan had the knowledge. Leila had the motive. The investigation had been brief.

Leila's son was Kellan's biological child.

I set the last page down.

Outside the window, the city moved. Cabs and pedestrians and the ordinary machinery of a world that did not know or care what had happened in a freezing storage room four days ago.

I thought about her. Whatever she had looked like. Whatever small, furious thing she had been.

I thought about Kellan's face in the narrowing gap of the door. That calm. That particular, practiced calm.

The grief didn't leave. I didn't expect it to. It had taken up permanent residence somewhere behind my sternum and I understood, clearly and without drama, that it would live there for the rest of my life.

But something else had arrived alongside it now. Something cold and exact and very, very patient.

I picked up the folder again.

'I need a pen,' I said.

My father reached into his jacket and held one out without a word.

I uncapped it.

I began.
