Chapter 4

The call from Darren's attorney comes on a Thursday.

I'm at work. The gallery is quiet. I'm standing in front of a painting I've looked at a hundred times — a woman with her back turned, walking into a field of red — when my phone buzzes.

Unknown number.

I almost don't answer.

"Ms. Hart?" A man's voice. Professional. Clipped. "This is Richard Brennan from Whitmore & Associates. I represent Darren Clark."

My stomach drops.

"Yes?"

"I'm calling to inform you that Mr. Clark has instructed us to terminate all medical payments previously allocated to Mount Sinai Hospital, effective immediately."

The painting blurs.

"What?"

"The payments for your mother's care. They've been discontinued as of this morning."

I grip the edge of the reception desk. "You can't do that. It's in the settlement. We signed—"

"Mr. Clark is prepared to address any breach-of-contract claims through litigation. Given the circumstances surrounding Ms. Morrison's miscarriage, he feels—"

"I didn't touch her." My voice is too loud. A visitor near the entrance turns to look. "I didn't push her. There were no cameras. There's no proof—"

"That's not my concern, Ms. Hart. I'm simply informing you of Mr. Clark's decision. Any further questions should be directed through legal channels."

The line goes dead.

I stand there, phone pressed to my ear, listening to silence.

Then I run.

I call Mount Sinai from the street.

A woman in billing picks up. Her voice is kind. Tired.

"I need to talk about my mother," I say. I'm walking fast. People are staring. "Caroline Hart. She's in the ICU. Life support. I need to know—"

"Let me pull up the account." Keys clicking. A pause. "Ms. Hart, I'm showing that the primary payer terminated coverage this morning. Without those payments, we can't—"

"How long?" My voice cracks. "How long can she stay on support?"

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Seventy-two hours," she says quietly. "After that, we'll need to discuss next steps."

Next steps.

I stop walking. I'm on Fifth Avenue. Tourists everywhere. Someone bumps into me. Keeps going.

"How much?" I ask. "How much do I need?"

She tells me.

The number is impossible.

"I'll get it," I say. "I'll find it. Just please don't — please don't do anything yet."

"Ms. Hart—"

"Please."

She's quiet for a moment. Then: "Seventy-two hours. I'm sorry."

I hang up.

I stand on the corner of Fifth and 53rd and I try to breathe.

Seventy-two hours.

Three days.

I pull up my bank account. The number is small. Pathetic. I sold my car last month. My apartment is a sublet. I have nothing worth selling except my mother's wedding ring, and I can't — I won't—

I call Darren.

The number I've had for eight years doesn't work anymore. The automated voice tells me it's been disconnected.

I try his attorney again. Voicemail.

I try the loft. No answer.

I call Angela.

She picks up on the third ring.

"Caroline." Her voice is cool. Measured. "This isn't a good time."

"Please," I say. "Please, I just need to talk to Darren. It's about my mother. The payments — he can't just stop them. It's in the settlement. We agreed—"

"Darren made his decision."

"She's dying. She's on life support. Without the money—"

"Perhaps," Angela says, and her voice is so calm it makes my skin crawl, "this is an opportunity for you to learn to stand on your own."

I stop breathing.

"What?"

"You've relied on my son for too long. It's time you took responsibility for your own life."

"She's my mother."

"And these are the consequences of your actions." A pause. "Zayla lost her baby, Caroline. Did you think there wouldn't be repercussions?"

"I didn't push her."

"That's not what she says."

"Then she's lying!"

Angela sighs. Like I'm a child throwing a tantrum.

"I think it's best if you don't contact this family again," she says. "For everyone's sake."

The line goes dead.

I stand there, phone in hand, and something inside me starts to break.

Not the quick snap from the staircase. Not the clean break of signing divorce papers.

This is slower. Deeper. The kind of breaking that doesn't make a sound.

I empty my savings account that afternoon. Every dollar.

I borrow from my coworker, Jenna, who has two kids and a car payment. She gives me three hundred dollars and hugs me and tells me she's sorry.

I call my old college roommate. She sends two hundred.

I go to a pawn shop on 47th Street and sell my laptop, my watch, and the gold bracelet my mother gave me when I graduated.

The man behind the counter counts out bills. His hands are careful. He doesn't ask questions.

I add it all up on my phone.

It's not enough.

It's not even close.

I sit on the steps outside the pawn shop and I do the math again. And again. Like the numbers might change if I just check one more time.

They don't change.

My phone buzzes. A text from Mount Sinai. A reminder. Forty-eight hours remaining.

I close my eyes.

The city is loud around me. Sirens. Horns. Someone shouting.

I think about my mother in that hospital bed. Machines breathing for her. Monitors beeping. Alone.

I think about Darren in his loft with Zayla curled against him, her face buried in his chest, her lies wrapped around them both like a blanket.

I think about Judah, who doesn't need me anymore.

I think about the number in my bank account and the number the hospital needs and the impossible distance between them.

Then I stand up.

I walk to the subway.

I go home.

I have forty-eight hours to save my mother's life.

And I already know I'm going to fail.
