Chapter 5

The hospital smells like bleach and something else. Something underneath. Decay pretending to be clean.

I've been sitting in this chair for eleven hours.

My mother's hand is cold in mine. It's always cold now. The machines breathe for her. In and out. In and out. A rhythm I've memorized.

The monitors beep. Steady. Reliable. Proof that she's still here.

I read to her earlier. More Jane Eyre. My voice was hoarse but I kept going. I told her about the gallery. About a painting I saw last week. About nothing and everything because I needed her to hear me. To know I was here.

I told her I tried.

The door opens.

Dr. Holt steps in. I know her face now. I've seen it every day for the past month. Kind eyes. Tired smile. The kind of doctor who still cares but has learned not to show it too much.

She's not smiling now.

"Caroline." She says my name like an apology.

I stand up. My legs are stiff. I don't let go of my mother's hand.

"We need to talk," Dr. Holt says.

I already know. I've known since the phone call three days ago. But knowing and hearing are different things.

"The seventy-two hours are up," she continues. Her voice is gentle. Professional. "Without payment, we've been instructed to begin discontinuing life support."

The words land but they don't make sense. They're in the wrong order. They belong to someone else's life.

"No," I say.

Dr. Holt looks at me. Steady. Sad.

"I'm sorry."

"No." Louder this time. "You can't. I just need more time. I'm getting the money. I just need—"

"Caroline—"

"Please." My voice cracks. "Please, just a few more days. A week. I'll get it. I swear I'll—"

"There's nothing I can do." She takes a step toward me. "I'm so sorry. But the decision has been made."

"Then unmake it!" I'm shouting now. A nurse outside glances through the window. "She's a person. She's my mother. You can't just—"

"I know." Dr. Holt's voice is quiet. Firm. "I know she is. But without payment, the hospital can't continue treatment. I wish it were different."

She turns toward the door.

I follow her.

Out into the corridor. The fluorescent lights are too bright. Everything is too bright.

"Dr. Holt, please—"

She stops. Turns back.

I drop to my knees.

Right there on the hospital floor. Cold linoleum. Shiny. Clean. I can see my reflection in it.

"Please," I say again. My hands are pressed together. I don't care. I don't care who sees. "Please don't do this. I'll get the money. I'll figure it out. Just give me more time. Please. I'm begging you."

Dr. Holt looks down at me. Her eyes are wet.

"I can't," she whispers. "I'm so sorry."

She walks away.

I stay on my knees. A nurse approaches. Tries to help me up. I shake her off.

I don't know how long I stay there.

Eventually, someone pulls me to my feet. Guides me back to the room.

My mother is still there. Still breathing. The machines still beeping.

For now.

I sit back down. I take her hand again.

"I'm here, Mom," I say. My voice is raw. Broken. "I'm not leaving."

The machines breathe for her.

In and out.

In and out.

I talk to her through the night.

I tell her about our apartment when I was little. The one with the yellow kitchen and the window that stuck. How she used to make pancakes on Sunday mornings and burn them every time but we ate them anyway.

I tell her about the time I fell off my bike and scraped my knee and she carried me six blocks home even though I was too big to carry.

I tell her about college. About meeting Darren. About the wedding she cried at because she was so happy.

I tell her I'm sorry.

I tell her I tried.

I tell her I love her.

Her hand is still cold in mine.

The monitors beep. Steady. Steady. Steady.

Until they're not.

The sound changes first. A different rhythm. Wrong.

Then the line on the screen starts to flatten.

I stand up. My chair scrapes back.

"Mom?"

The line flattens more.

"Mom. No. No no no—"

The monitor goes flat.

One long, endless tone.

I'm screaming.

I don't remember starting. But I'm screaming and I can't stop.

The door bursts open. Dr. Holt. Two nurses. An orderly.

They're talking to me but I can't hear them. I can only hear the monitor. That single, terrible note.

Someone tries to pull me away from the bed. I fight them.

"Mom!" I'm still screaming. "Mom, please, wake up, please—"

Hands on my arms. Gentle but firm. Pulling me back.

"Caroline." Dr. Holt's voice. Close. "Caroline, she's gone."

"No."

"I'm so sorry."

"No!" I'm thrashing now. Fighting. "Let me go. Let me—"

They pull me out into the corridor. Sit me in a chair. Someone's hands are on my shoulders, holding me down.

I scream until my throat closes. Until no sound comes out. Until there's nothing left.

Then I go silent.

I sit in that chair and I stare at the wall and I feel every piece of myself that was still holding on finally let go.

My mother is dead.

Darren killed her.

And I have nothing left to lose.
