Chapter 2

The first lash landed with a sound like a wet branch striking stone. I didn't make a sound. I had learned, somewhere between the stolen research and the public humiliation, that my voice meant nothing in this house. The second lash came harder, and I felt something inside me settle into a strange, calm clarity. This was happening. There was no one coming to stop it.

Cole's face remained expressionless as he worked through the count. Nineteen. Twenty. The numbers became abstract, mathematical. I focused on the pattern of veins in the ceiling, the way the afternoon light filtered through the curtains in thin, golden lines. Thirty-seven. Thirty-eight. The pain was distant, almost academic.

By the seventieth lash, my legs had given out. I knelt on the carpet, my hands flat against the floor, but my back remained straight. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing me broken. Eighty-nine. Ninety. Cole's breathing had changed—shorter, more controlled. He was counting faster now, as if he could outrun what he was doing.

The ninety-ninth lash fell, and the room went silent. The only sound was my own heartbeat, steady and unbroken. Cole stepped back, the implement in his hand trembling slightly. He didn't look at me. He couldn't. He turned his back and walked to the door, his footsteps muffled by the thick carpet.

"It's done," he said, not to me, but to the door. The lock clicked, and he was gone.

I stayed there for a long time, counting my own breaths, one for each lash. When I finally stood, my legs shook, but I made it to the bathroom alone. I showered with the water as hot as I could bear, watching the blood swirl down the drain. I didn't cry. I had forgotten how.

The next morning, a delivery man brought flowers to the front door. Lilies—my grandmother's favorites. I signed for them mechanically, already knowing who they were from. The card was small, elegant, with a single line in flowing script: "Thinking of you. —V"

I read it twice, then set it down on the entryway table. I didn't throw it away. Instead, I walked to my study, opened my journal, and taped the card to the inside cover. Evidence. Documentation. I was becoming meticulous about these things.

Two weeks later, the call came at three in the morning. Valentina had been in an accident. A billboard had collapsed outside the Met Gala venue, striking her as she exited her car. She was at Mount Sinai, critical condition, possible permanent vision loss.

I dressed quickly and drove myself to the hospital. The emergency room was a blur of fluorescent lights and urgent voices. I found Cole in the surgical waiting area, his face ashen, his hands clasped so tightly his knuckles were white.

"What happened?" I asked, though I already knew the answer would be another performance.

"The structure wasn't secured properly," he said, not looking at me. "She was just walking to the entrance. It came down without warning. The doctors say... they say she might lose her sight in one eye."

I nodded, feeling that same cold clarity settling over me. "I'm sorry," I said, and meant it, though not for the reason he thought.

A doctor approached, clipboard in hand, his expression grave. "Mr. Reynolds, we need to discuss options. Your friend's condition is deteriorating. We believe a corneal transplant is her best chance, but we need a donor immediately."

Cole straightened, his jaw set. "Whatever she needs. Do it."

"We'll need consent forms, of course," the doctor said. "And the donor will need to be prepped for surgery. It's a relatively simple procedure, but—"

"I'll sign whatever you need," Cole interrupted. "Just save her vision."

I felt a chill run through me. "Cole, what are you saying?"

He finally looked at me, his eyes hard and certain. "You're a match, Eliza. We checked your medical records when you were admitted last month. It's a small sacrifice. You have two eyes. She has none."

Before I could respond, two nurses appeared at my sides. "Mrs. Reynolds? We need you to come with us for a pre-op evaluation. It's just a formality."

I tried to speak, to ask questions, but the words wouldn't come. They led me down a hallway, into a room where a nurse prepared a syringe. "Just something to help you relax," she said with a practiced smile.

The sedative worked quickly. As consciousness slipped away, I heard Cole's voice from the doorway: "Tell her it was for the best. Tell her I'm grateful."

When I woke, the world was half-dark. My left eye was bandaged, throbbing with a dull, persistent ache. A nurse was adjusting my IV, her movements efficient and impersonal.

"What happened?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

She avoided my gaze. "You're in recovery, Mrs. Reynolds. The procedure went well. You should be able to see normally in your right eye once the bandage comes off. The other... well, the donor was very fortunate."

"Donor?" The word felt foreign, wrong.

The nurse hesitated, then sighed. "I shouldn't be telling you this, but... your husband signed the consent forms. He said you agreed to the corneal transplant. It was for a friend of his—a woman named Valentina. She's in the VIP suite down the hall."

I closed my eye, the one that still worked, and felt nothing. No tears, no rage, no pain beyond the physical. "I'd like to see the paperwork," I said quietly.

The nurse looked surprised, then nodded. "I can get you a copy. It's hospital policy to provide documentation."

When she returned with the forms, I read them carefully, my vision blurring slightly from the strain. Cole's signature was bold, confident, at the bottom of the page. I took the pen the nurse offered and wrote in the margin, in my own neat handwriting: "He did not ask me."

I would remember that. I would document everything from now on. Because someday, someone would need to know the truth.
