Chapter 5

The bleeding stopped after two weeks, but my head stayed clear.

For five years, my mind had been full of thick fog. Every time Lawson stayed out late, every time he brought Kairi around, he had an explanation. *You don't understand how business works, Ember. I have to protect our standing. I do this so you don't have to worry.*

I had believed him because I wanted to. I had believed him because my brother’s heart was beating inside his ribs.

Now, the fog was gone.

I requested my complete medical file from the hospital. The file arrived as a thick PDF in my inbox.

Back when Rafael was alive, I spent hours reading telemetry data from our test laps. I knew how to look at throttle inputs, tire wear, and fuel pressure. You don't argue with data. Numbers don't have feelings. They just tell you where the car broke down.

I read my charts the same way.

The doctor had noted a sudden, violent drop in progesterone. The uterine contractions had been sharp and abnormal for ten weeks. Something had triggered the bleed.

I sat at my desk and looked around the penthouse. I saw the cage clearly for the first time.

Every crisis had been manufactured. Every time Lawson cut me down, he told me it was for my own good. He made me feel small so I would stay quiet. He made me feel crazy so I wouldn't trust my own eyes. My endurance wasn't saving the marriage. My endurance was just giving him permission to hurt me more.

I created a new folder on an encrypted drive. I named it *Hughes.*

Then I began saving every bank transfer, every Scrapyard receipt, and every medical note.

At two in the morning, three days later, my laptop chimed.

A new email appeared in my personal inbox. The sender address was a random string of numbers from a burner account.

The subject line was short: *Prenatal Protocol.*

I clicked it open.

There were four scanned attachments. I opened the first one. It was a prescription log on heavy clinic stationery, signed by Dr. Martin Osei.

The second page was worse.

It was a handwritten directive on Douglas Hughes’s personal memo paper.

*Adjust the daily compound,* Douglas had written in his clean, slanting cursive. *We cannot allow complications to reach term. Ensure it leaves no trace in routine panels.*

Beneath it was the chemical formula for the pills in the amber glass bottle. The pills that were delivered to my nightstand every single morning. The pills I swallowed with tap water while Lawson slept beside me.

My chest went cold.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw my laptop. I just sat in the dark and read the pages again.

Then I read them a third time.

Douglas had poisoned my child before it ever had a chance to breathe. And Dr. Osei had helped him do it.

I pressed my fingers against my sternum. The bone felt hard and dry under my skin. I didn't cry. There was no grief left in me, only cold iron.

I dragged all four files into the *Hughes* folder. I backed them up to three separate cloud drives. Then I closed my laptop.

Lawson noticed the change by the end of the week.

I wasn't crying anymore. I didn't ask when he was coming home. When he walked into a room, I didn't look at his chest. I didn't look for Rafael in him.

He didn't like it. He was used to my hurt. My hurt meant he still owned me.

On Thursday, he canceled his flight to Chicago.

He came home at five in the afternoon carrying a large bunch of white calla lilies. He hadn't bought me flowers since our second anniversary.

"I thought these would look good on the counter," he said. His voice was soft and warm.

He set the flowers in a glass vase and walked into the kitchen. He took off his jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeves. He had the same easy, boyish smile he wore the summer we met.

"You've been quiet lately, Ember," he said. He sat on the barstool across from me. "I don't like seeing you like this. Let's get away for a few days. We can drive up to Vermont. Just the two of us. No phones."

He reached across the marble and tried to take my hand.

I pulled my hand back smoothly to reach for the coffee pot.

"Vermont is cold this time of year," I said.

His eyes narrowed for a fraction of a second. Then the charming smile slid back into place.

"We'll stay by the fire," he said. "Like we used to. I know things have been hard with the clinic. But we're going to get through it. I promised you I'd take care of you, didn't I?"

I looked right into his eyes.

I saw the neat line of his jaw. I saw the expensive watch on his wrist. And behind his ribs, my brother’s heart kept beating, keeping a coward alive.

It was all an act. Every single word was a script he used to pull the leash tight again.

"Yes," I said. My voice was completely flat. "You did."

I poured black coffee into a white ceramic mug. I set it down in front of him without spilling a drop.

"Thank you for the lilies, Lawson," I added with a tiny, polite smile.

He relaxed. His shoulders dropped. He thought the trick had worked. He thought I was still his broken, obedient wife.

"Drink your coffee," I said. "I'm going to bed early."

I turned around and walked down the hallway, leaving him alone under the bright kitchen lights.
