Chapter 3

Victor's hand stayed on my arm as we left the salon. His grip was professional. Measured. The kind of hold that looked polite from a distance but left bruises beneath the surface. James walked ahead of us, his phone already pressed to his ear, his voice clipped and businesslike as he spoke to someone about the ambulance, the hospital, the arrangements for Chelsea.

No one followed us into the hallway.

The first blow came before we reached the front door. Victor's fist connected with my ribs—a sharp, calculated strike that drove the air from my lungs and sent me stumbling against the wall. I tried to speak. To say his name. To ask why. But Victor didn't pause. He pulled me upright and hit me again, this time across the face. My vision blurred. Blood filled my mouth.

'Mr. Castillo's orders,' Victor said quietly. His voice was calm. Almost apologetic. 'You understand.'

I didn't understand. I couldn't understand. But understanding wasn't required.

He dragged me through the front door and into the waiting car. The driver didn't look back. Victor shoved me into the back seat and climbed in beside me. The car pulled away from the estate, the lights of the house fading behind us as we drove into the dark.

I pressed my hand to my ribs. Each breath felt like glass. 'Where are we going?'

'To see your mother,' Victor replied.

The words didn't make sense. Then they did. And the fear that flooded through me was worse than the pain.

The private care facility was quiet when we arrived. The night staff recognized Victor—he had accompanied James here before, during the rare visits when James needed to appear concerned about my mother's condition for the sake of appearances. They opened the doors without question. They did not ask why I was bleeding. They did not ask why Victor's hand was on my arm.

We walked down the sterile hallway to my mother's room. The door was already open. Inside, Amelie lay exactly as she always did—small and still beneath the white sheets, her face peaceful in the way that comatose faces are peaceful. The machines hummed softly. Her chest rose and fell in the mechanical rhythm I had memorized over years of sitting beside her bed.

Victor pushed me inside and closed the door behind us.

'Please,' I whispered. My voice cracked. 'Please don't do this here.'

He didn't answer. He hit me again, and I fell to my knees beside my mother's bed. I reached for the edge of the mattress, trying to pull myself up, but Victor's boot connected with my back and I collapsed onto the cold tile floor.

I curled into myself. I tried to make myself smaller. I tried to disappear.

But Victor was methodical. Professional. He took his time.

I don't know how long it lasted. Time stopped meaning anything. There was only pain, and the sound of my mother's ventilator, and the knowledge that she was three feet away and could not help me and could not even know I was there.

When Victor finally stopped, I lay on the floor and tasted blood. My ribs screamed with every breath. My face felt swollen and wrong. I heard Victor's phone buzz. He answered it, his voice still calm and businesslike.

'It's done,' he said. Then he listened. 'Understood. I'll stay with her.'

He ended the call and looked down at me. 'Mr. Castillo will be here soon. Don't move.'

I didn't move. I couldn't move.

Twenty minutes later, the door opened again. But it wasn't James. It was Dr. Harrison Vance, the facility's medical director, flanked by two nurses. He looked at me on the floor, his expression tight and uncomfortable, and then he looked at my mother.

'We need to proceed immediately,' Dr. Vance said to the nurses. 'Mr. Castillo has authorized the transfusion.'

'Transfusion?' I pushed myself up onto my elbows. Pain lanced through my ribs. 'What transfusion?'

Dr. Vance didn't look at me. 'Miss Mendez requires an emergency blood transfusion. Your mother is the only compatible match available.'

'No.' I tried to stand. My legs wouldn't hold me. 'No, you can't—she's in a coma—she can't—'

'Mr. Castillo has given his authorization,' Dr. Vance repeated. His voice was flat. Rehearsed. 'We have no choice.'

'She'll die!' I screamed. 'You'll kill her!'

The nurses moved to my mother's bedside. They began preparing the equipment—needles, tubes, bags. I crawled toward them, my hands slipping on the tile, my vision swimming.

'Please,' I begged. 'Please don't do this. Take mine. Take my blood. Leave her alone. Please.'

Victor's hand closed around my arm. He hauled me back, pinning me against the wall. I fought him. I clawed at his hands. I screamed until my throat tore.

But the nurses didn't stop.

I watched them insert the needle into my mother's arm. I watched the blood begin to flow through the clear tubing, dark and thick and too much. I watched the monitors. Her heart rate dropped. Her oxygen levels fell. The machines began to alarm—soft beeps that grew louder, more insistent, more desperate.

'Stop,' I sobbed. 'Please stop. She's dying. You're killing her. Please.'

Dr. Vance stood at the foot of the bed, his face pale, his hands clasped behind his back. He watched the monitors. He did not call for the transfusion to stop.

My mother's chest rose once more. Then it stopped.

The alarms shrieked. The flatline tone filled the room—steady, endless, absolute.

And I understood, kneeling on the floor of the only room that had ever felt safe, that James Castillo had not just taken my mother from me.

He had made me watch.
