Chapter 4

The morgue was cold in a way that had nothing to do with temperature. Steel tables. A drain in the floor. A smell like bleach trying to cover something it couldn't cover. I sat on a plastic chair against the wall because my legs didn't want to hold me anymore, and I waited for someone to tell me I could see her.

I didn't hear the door. I heard her heels.

Chelsea stood in the doorway, and she looked wrong there — too clean, too pressed, her hair falling in the same soft waves it always did. No hospital gown. No IV line. No blood on her dress. Three hours ago she'd been screaming on a floor, clutching a stomach that had never carried anything.

"You look terrible," she said.

I didn't answer. My hands were folded in my lap. I watched her the way you watch weather coming in — not afraid exactly, just aware that something was about to happen and there was nothing to do but let it.

"I almost feel bad," she said, stepping inside. She let the door swing shut behind her. "Almost."

"Feel bad about what."

She smiled. It was the smile she used at parties, the one that made people trust her. "The blood was corn syrup and food coloring. My assistant mixed it in the bathroom that morning. The ultrasound picture — I bought that online, Dorothy. Twelve dollars. There's a whole industry for it. Fake baby pictures for girls like me."

Something in my chest went very still, the way a room goes still right before a storm hits it.

"There was never a baby," I said. Not a question. I already knew. I just needed to hear it out loud, once, so it would be real.

"There was never a baby," she agreed. "And even if I'd wanted one — really wanted one, with James — it wouldn't have been his." She tilted her head, studying me like I was something she'd already won. "Did he ever tell you why the IVF kept failing?"

I said nothing.

"Zero percent," she said softly. "His sperm viability. Zero. The doctors told him years ago. He never told you." She laughed, a small breathy sound, almost fond. "Every round, Dorothy. Every needle. Every time you cried in that clinic bathroom — I know you did, don't look at me like that — none of it was ever going to work. Not once. Not ever."

The fluorescent light hummed above us. Somewhere down the hall, a gurney wheel squeaked.

"You were never in the way," Chelsea said, almost gently, like she was doing me a kindness. "You were just a placeholder. Something to keep his name clean until I was ready."

I looked at her. I looked at the door behind her, and the hallway beyond it, and the room down that hallway where my mother's body lay under a sheet because James Castillo had decided her blood belonged to someone else.

I didn't cry. I didn't feel the urge to. Whatever had been holding on inside me — some last thread, thin and frayed, tied all the way back to a fifteen-year-old girl in a bad dress watching a boy step between her mother and a room full of laughing strangers — that thread went quiet. Not snapped. Quiet. Like a phone line going dead mid-sentence.

Chelsea waited for something. Tears, maybe. A scream. When neither came, her smile flickered, just slightly, and she left.

I stayed for a long time in the plastic chair. Then I stood up and went home.

For four days I moved through the Castillo estate like something that had already died and hadn't been informed yet. I answered condolence calls in a flat, even voice. I signed the paperwork for my mother's cremation. I ate what was put in front of me and didn't taste it. James didn't come near me, and I understood that this, too, was a kind of mercy, though he didn't intend it as one.

On the fifth day, I drove to the parking structure on Sixth, level three, the way Marcus's message had told me to. He was leaning against a concrete pillar in a gray coat, checking his watch like he always did, though I wasn't late.

"I've been putting pieces together for longer than you know," he said, without preamble. No condolences. I was grateful for that.

"How long."

"Eight months." He handed me a slim folder. "New identity. A place in New York, already leased under a name that doesn't trace back to you. And a way to make what happens next look permanent enough that no one keeps looking."

I opened the folder. A driver's license with a stranger's name and my face. I studied it under the flickering garage light.

"Why are you helping me."

"Because I watched for years and did nothing," he said. "I'm done doing nothing."

"Will it hold up? If they investigate."

"Long enough. After that, it won't matter, because you'll already be someone they're not looking for."

I closed the folder. My hands were steady, which surprised me.

"One more question," I said. "After the cliff. Will you tell him I'm alive?"

Marcus looked at me for a long moment. "Not unless you ask me to."

"I won't."

He nodded once, like a man closing a file. "Then we start tomorrow."

I walked back to my car and drove home under a sky gone the color of ash, and for the first time in seven years, I felt something that wasn't grief and wasn't love. It felt almost like breathing.
