Chapter 2

The gathering started at seven. I arrived at the Castillo estate exactly on time, wearing a dress that Lucy had once told me was too plain for important occasions. James was already in the main salon with his associates, a glass of scotch in his hand. Chelsea stood near the windows, her dress a deep red that caught the light every time she moved. She looked radiant. She looked like she belonged.

I took a seat near the back of the room. The conversations around me hummed with the particular energy of people who knew they mattered—mergers, acquisitions, vacation homes in the Hamptons. I folded my hands in my lap and waited for the evening to end.

Chelsea's voice cut through the noise. 'Dorothy, come sit with us.' She gestured to the cluster of women near the fireplace. 'We were just talking about wellness retreats. You could use one, couldn't you?'

I rose and crossed the room. The women smiled at me with the kind of politeness that required nothing in return. I sat on the edge of a chair, my posture straight, my hands still folded.

'You look tired,' Chelsea said, tilting her head. 'Are you sleeping?'

'I'm fine.'

'It's just that you've been through so much.' She placed her hand on her stomach, a gesture so subtle that only I would have noticed its deliberateness. 'All those treatments. I can't imagine how hard it must be, trying and trying and never…' She trailed off, her expression soft with manufactured sympathy.

One of the other women leaned forward. 'Are you still doing IVF?'

'We are,' I said quietly.

Chelsea sighed. 'I just wonder sometimes if it's a sign, you know? That some bodies simply aren't meant for motherhood. Not everyone is built for it. There's no shame in accepting that.'

The room didn't go silent. It went still. The difference was profound. Conversations continued at the edges, but the women around me stopped moving. They watched. They waited.

I looked at Chelsea. I saw the girl who had spent years in my shadow, who had wanted what I had even when I had never wanted it myself. I saw the woman who had built a hundred-page document of my humiliation and sent it into the world like a gift.

'Some people confuse wanting something with deserving it,' I said.

My voice was quiet. It did not rise. It simply landed.

Chelsea's smile did not change, but her hand moved to the back of her neck. Just for a second. Just long enough.

Then she gasped.

Her hand flew to her stomach. She doubled over, her face contorting in pain. 'Oh God,' she whispered. 'Oh God, no.'

The women around her surged forward. Someone called for James. Chelsea staggered, her legs buckling, and then she was on the floor. Blood spread beneath her—vivid, impossible, theatrical. She screamed.

'She pushed me!' Chelsea's voice tore through the room. 'Dorothy—she hit me—my baby—'

I stood exactly where I had been sitting. My hands were at my sides. I had not moved. I had not touched her. I had not done anything except speak.

The women turned toward me. Their faces shifted from shock to something harder. One of them—a woman I had met at three different charity events, whose name I could not remember—stepped between Chelsea and me, as if I were a threat that needed containing.

'Someone call an ambulance,' another voice said.

'James is on his way,' someone else replied.

I looked down at Chelsea. She was crying now, her hands clutching her stomach, her eyes squeezed shut. The blood pooled around her dress, soaking into the expensive rug. It looked real. It looked devastating.

I opened my mouth to speak. To say that I had not touched her. That I had been sitting in a chair. That this was a performance.

But the women were already moving, already forming a wall between Chelsea and me, already deciding what they had seen. I understood, with perfect clarity, that nothing I said would matter. Chelsea had spent months building this moment. She had cultivated allies, shaped impressions, prepared the ground. I had spent seven years making myself invisible.

The door opened. James strode in, his expression already hardening before he fully took in the scene. He saw Chelsea on the floor. He saw the blood. He saw the women gathered around her like a protective barrier. He saw me, standing alone, my hands empty.

He did not ask what happened. He did not look at my face.

'Victor,' he said, his voice cold and absolute. 'Remove her.'

Victor Thorne stepped forward from his position near the door. He was a large man, built for intimidation, and he moved with the efficiency of someone who had received this kind of instruction before.

I did not resist. I did not speak. I simply stood there as Victor's hand closed around my arm, his grip tight enough to leave marks I would see later in the mirror.

As he led me toward the door, I looked back once. Chelsea's eyes were open now, watching me leave. She was still crying. She was still holding her stomach.

But her mouth curved, just slightly, at the corners.

No one else saw it.

Only me.
