My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter Novel Cover

My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter

Arabella walks in at 4:15 like always, but tonight she's shaking. Dark spots stain her uniform jumper, and she clutches Clover, her stuffed rabbit, until her knuckles go white. She doesn't run to me. She just stands in the hallway and sobs, "Mama, please don't make me go back." I kneel and take her arms before my mind can catch up to what I'm seeing. My husband allowed his mistress to destroy our daughter, and now the truth seeps through every mark on her skin. To protect Arabella, I must face the horror hiding inside my own home.

Chapter 3

I made it maybe ten feet before I heard the first crunch of metal.

I turned around. A man I didn't recognize — someone's husband, blue polo, gold watch — had a key in his hand and was dragging it down the driver's side door of the Phantom. A long silver scream of a scratch, hood to trunk.

"Yes!" Angie clapped like she was at a tailgate. "Do the other side!"

Someone else kicked the front panel. The dent stayed. A woman I'd seen at pickup a hundred times, always smiling, always saying *have a good one*, picked up a rock from the flower bed and threw it at the windshield. The glass spidered but held.

Thalia stood at the edge of it all, coffee cup still in her hand, watching like she was at a parade. "Careful," she called out, not to stop them. To direct them. "Get the taillights too."

I didn't move. I felt strangely far away from my own body, like I was watching this happen to someone else's car, someone else's life. Then a teenager — somebody's older kid, maybe fifteen — popped the trunk latch, and my stomach dropped through the pavement.

"What is *this*?" Thalia was already there, already lifting it out. The scroll. Eight hundred years old. Silk the color of old tea, ink strokes so fine they looked breathed onto the page rather than painted. Three hundred million dollars, and she held it up over her head like a beach towel.

"Ugly," she said, and tore it in half.

The sound it made was worse than the metal. A soft, final rip, like something breathing its last breath. The crowd cheered. Ainsley had her phone up, narrating in a bright singsong voice — *you guys will not believe this, okay, backstory, this woman just tried to attack my friend* — while parents stomped the pieces into the asphalt, grinding silk into the ground with the heels of their sneakers.

I turned away from it. I had to, or I was going to be sick.

The administrative office door was unlocked. Everyone was outside, watching the show. I walked in, and the quiet hit me like a wall — fluorescent lights humming, a fax machine blinking, a coffee maker half full and going cold. I found the filing cabinet behind the front desk. F for Franklin. My hands were steady. I don't know how they were steady.

The file was thick. Attendance notes. A behavioral report from Judith calling Arabella "withdrawn and difficult to engage." A permission slip for a field trip I'd signed in September. And then, near the back, a single sheet, stapled crooked, stamped in red: CONFIDENTIAL — DO NOT FORWARD TO PARENT.

I read it twice.

*Incident date: three weeks prior. Student C. Hernandez accessed classroom scissors during unsupervised free play. Injury to student A. Franklin, left foot, smallest toe, resulting in full severance. Wound cleaned and dressed on-site by school nurse. Student informed injury was accidental. Parent not contacted per administrative discretion. Digit not recoverable for reattachment.*

I read the last line a third time. *Digit not recoverable for reattachment.*

They'd cut off my daughter's toe with classroom scissors. They'd bandaged it themselves. They'd told a five-year-old it was an accident and told no one else anything at all.

I don't remember deciding to fold the file and hold it against my ribs. I just found myself doing it, my arm wrapped around it like it was the only solid thing left in the building. My face didn't move. I checked, in the dark window glass — nothing moved. Not my mouth, not my eyes. I looked like a woman reading a grocery list.

I walked back out into the courtyard.

The mob had moved from the car to me. I saw it happen in pieces — Angie's face turning, Ainsley lowering her phone an inch, someone saying, low, "She's not even crying." And then Thalia's voice, flat and pleased: "Get her."

Hands. So many hands. Someone grabbed my shoulder and yanked, and the ground came up fast, gravel biting into my palms, my knee, my hip. A sneaker caught my ribs. Another connected with my back. I curled around the file the way you'd curl around a child, knees to chest, and I did not scream.

Above me, through the tangle of legs and fists, I saw Thalia's phone, tilted down, red light blinking. Recording. Smiling while she recorded.

I thought about Arabella's face in the hallway that morning. *Mama, please don't make me go back.* I thought about a stuffed rabbit gripped so hard the seams strained. I thought about a toe that would never grow back, and a nurse who cleaned the wound and said nothing, and I held the file tighter against my ribs and let them hit me, because the truth was already in my arms, and nothing they did to my body was going to take it back out.
