My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter Novel Cover

My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter

Arabella walks in at 4:15 like always, but tonight she's shaking. Dark spots stain her uniform jumper, and she clutches Clover, her stuffed rabbit, until her knuckles go white. She doesn't run to me. She just stands in the hallway and sobs, "Mama, please don't make me go back." I kneel and take her arms before my mind can catch up to what I'm seeing. My husband allowed his mistress to destroy our daughter, and now the truth seeps through every mark on her skin. To protect Arabella, I must face the horror hiding inside my own home.

Chapter 4

I heard the engines before I saw them. Three black Escalades, moving in formation, tires crunching gravel like they owned the driveway. The mob around me loosened its grip. Someone's knee lifted off my back. I stayed curled on the ground, the file pressed to my ribs, and I watched boots step backward to make room.

Mateo got out first.

Charcoal suit, no tie, the top button undone like he'd rushed but still remembered to look good doing it. Three executives fell into step behind him — I recognized Conrad Ellis's silver hair, his careful, unreadable face. Mateo's eyes swept the courtyard once, quick, like a man counting a room before he starts talking.

Thalia was already moving. She crossed the pavers at a near-run, arms out, tears arriving right on cue. "Mateo, baby, she attacked me! She's crazy, she came here screaming, look what she did to the car—"

"He's going to destroy her," Angie whispered to Ainsley, loud enough that I heard it from the ground. Ainsley's phone was still up, still recording, her mouth curved in a small, satisfied smile.

Judith pressed her hands together like she was praying. "Thank God," she said, to no one.

Everyone was smiling. Everyone was waiting for the same thing — for the powerful man to arrive and finish what the mob had started.

Mateo's gaze moved past Thalia's outstretched hand. Past the smashed windshield of my Phantom. Past the shredded silk scattered across the asphalt like dead leaves, eight hundred years of history ground under sneakers. His eyes kept moving, searching, and then they landed on me.

I watched the color leave his face in real time. Not slowly. All at once, like someone had reached inside him and pulled a plug.

His knees just went.

There was no grace in it, no theater, nothing like the man who used to walk into rooms like he owned the air in them. He hit the pavement hard, both knees at once, and a sound came out of him that didn't belong to a CEO or a husband or anyone I recognized. High and broken, almost a child's sound.

"Evangeline." My name, cracked in half. "Oh God. Oh my God, what did you do to her—"

Thalia's hand was still in the air, reaching for him. It just — stopped there. Frozen.

"Mateo?" Her voice had lost its polish. "What are you—"

"She's my wife." He said it to the ground first, like he couldn't lift his head all the way. Then he did lift it, and he said it again, louder, to everyone. "She's my wife. She's the real one. She's the owner — she owns Pinnacle Group. All of it. She's the heiress. I'm nobody. I married into her family, I'm nothing, I never — everything I have is hers. The company. The money. The house. All of it. It's all hers. I'm nothing without her."

The courtyard went silent in a way I've never heard silence before. Not quiet. Absolute. Like the whole world had been muted mid-breath.

Angie made a sound low in her throat, something between a word and a gag. Ainsley's phone was still pointed at me, still recording, and I watched — actually watched, because for one strange second I could see everything with terrible clarity — her expression fold in on itself, smug curiosity collapsing into something white and sick.

Thalia's hand was still out there in the air. Nobody was looking at her anymore.

I got up.

I didn't hurry. My knee screamed when I put weight on it and I let it scream. I planted one hand flat on the pavement, pushed, and stood, slow, like gravity itself had agreed to give me a minute. The file stayed against my chest the whole time. I wasn't putting it down for anyone.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. Blood came away on my knuckles, dark and thin. I looked at it for a second, then wiped it on my ruined skirt like it was nothing. I straightened my collar. It didn't help — the fabric was torn at the seam — but my hands needed something to do besides shake, and this kept them steady.

I stood there in the middle of the courtyard, bruised, bleeding, holding a folder that documented my daughter's missing toe, and I looked at every single face turned toward me.

Conrad Ellis wasn't smiling. None of the executives were. They stood rigid, hands at their sides, eyes down or eyes fixed somewhere just past my shoulder — the particular stillness of men who have always known exactly who signs their bonuses, who has simply never had to say her name out loud in a school parking lot.

They'd always known.

Every single one of them had always known.

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Somewhere behind me, a car alarm was still chirping weakly from the damage, and Thalia's arm finally, slowly, dropped to her side.
