Chapter 3

The alley smelled like garbage and motor oil. I lay on the asphalt with my cheek pressed against the pavement, staring at the strip of sky between buildings. The sun was there. Bright. Visible. I had been outside for six minutes now. My skin was warm but not burning. My throat was open. My lungs worked.

I heard footsteps. A man's voice, urgent. "Hey. Hey, can you hear me?"

I turned my head. A delivery driver in a brown uniform crouched beside me, phone already at his ear. "Yeah, I need an ambulance. Woman collapsed in the alley behind—" He rattled off an address I didn't recognize.

I tried to sit up. My abdomen cramped, and I gasped.

"Don't move," he said. "They're coming."

I looked down. Blood had soaked through my jeans. The medical records I'd printed were still clutched in my hand, the pages crumpled and damp. I smoothed them against my thigh with shaking fingers. Lennon's name. Lennon's diagnosis. Twenty-three years of my life, stolen with a single administrative switch.

The ambulance arrived. Paramedics lifted me onto a stretcher. Someone asked my name. I told them. Someone asked if I was on any medications. I said no. Someone asked if there was anyone they should call.

I said nothing.

---

The ER was bright. Too bright. I lay in a curtained bay with an IV in my arm and a monitor beeping beside me. A nurse had taken the medical records from my hand, scanned them into the system, and returned them without comment. I folded them carefully and tucked them under my pillow.

A doctor came in. Young. Tired. She explained what I already knew: incomplete miscarriage, significant blood loss, they'd need to monitor me overnight. She asked if I wanted them to contact my husband.

"No," I said.

"Family?"

"No."

She nodded and left.

I closed my eyes and counted. One Mississippi. Two Mississippi. Three.

At forty-seven, the curtain moved.

The man who stepped through was tall, dark-haired, wearing a charcoal suit that looked expensive even under fluorescent lighting. He moved with the kind of quiet authority that didn't need announcement. He stopped at the foot of my bed and looked at me for a long moment.

"Callie Carlson," he said. Not a question.

"Who are you?"

"Dominic Vasquez." He pulled a card from his pocket and set it on the rolling tray beside me. "I was an early investor in your research. Silent partner. I've been monitoring the Bell family's interest in your patents for the past six months."

I stared at him. My hand moved to the IV line, pressing my fingertips against the plastic.

"I suspected escalation was coming," he continued. "I didn't expect this." His gaze moved briefly to the monitor, the IV, the blood pressure cuff on my arm. "I'm sorry I wasn't faster."

"What do you want?"

"To offer you resources." His voice was calm. Measured. "Medical team. Therapist. A secure suite in my building. Legal counsel if you want to fight for your patents. A place to recover where no one can reach you."

I studied his face. No performative concern. No false warmth. Just information, delivered plainly.

"What's your leverage?" I asked.

"Your work. I invested because it's brilliant. I'm offering help because what they did to you is unconscionable, and because I have the resources to make sure they can't do it again."

"What do you expect to collect?"

"Nothing you don't freely choose to give." He adjusted his cufflinks once—a simple, precise motion—and I felt my chest tighten. Then he added: "If you want to walk away from all of it, I'll help you disappear. If you want to fight, I'll help you win. Your choice."

I looked down at my hands. The IV line. The bruises on my wrists where my mother had grabbed me. The faint tremor in my fingers.

"I need twenty-four hours," I said.

He picked up his card from the tray and held it out. I took it. The paper was thick. Expensive.

"Take as long as you need," he said.

He left without another word.

I spent the night alone in that curtained bay. The nurse checked on me twice. I asked for my phone. They'd bagged it with my belongings. I pulled up every document Dominic had mentioned—corporate filings, investment records, his early stake in my research. I cross-referenced them against the observations in my notebook, the one I'd kept for years, cataloging inconsistencies and behavioral patterns.

Everything he'd said was true. Every detail checked out.

At dawn, I called the number on his card.

He answered on the second ring.

"I'm not being rescued," I said. "I'm acquiring resources."

There was a pause. Then: "Understood."

"I'll take the suite. The legal counsel. And I want full access to whatever intelligence you have on the Bell family's corporate structure."

"Done."

I pressed my fingertips against the edge of the phone. "When can I move in?"

"I'll have a car outside in two hours."

I hung up. I folded the medical records and tucked them into my notebook. Then I lay back against the pillow and stared at the ceiling.

For the first time in five years, I felt my hands stop shaking.
