Chapter 4

The suite was on the forty-second floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows. I stood in the center of the living room and stared at them. Light poured through the glass—afternoon sun, unfiltered, direct. My chest tightened. My hand moved to my throat.

"The blinds are automated," Dominic said from the doorway. "Voice-controlled. You can close them whenever you want."

I didn't answer. I walked toward the windows. One step. Two. Three. The warmth touched my face. I stopped six inches from the glass and pressed my fingertips against it. The city stretched out below—buildings, traffic, people moving through their ordinary lives in daylight.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

"That the diagnosis was fabricated? Three months. I had your medical records audited when the Bell family started filing preliminary patent transfers."

I turned. He stood with his hands in his pockets, watching me with that same calm, measured expression. No pity. No performance.

"You didn't tell me."

"I had no proof you'd believe. And I suspected that if you learned the truth before you were physically safe, your family would escalate." He paused. "I was right."

I looked back at the window. At the light. "I need to go outside."

"Now?"

"Now."

He nodded once. "There's a terrace. Private. Twentieth floor."

---

The terrace was small. Concrete floor, metal railing, a few planters with dead plants no one had watered. The sun was low, orange, cutting across the buildings to the west. I stepped through the door and stopped.

Warmth on my face. My arms. My closed eyelids.

I counted. One Mississippi. Two Mississippi. Three.

At sixty, I opened my eyes.

No blistering. No burning. No anaphylaxis. Just warmth and light and the sound of traffic far below.

I walked to the railing. My hands gripped the metal. It was warm from the sun. I stood there for eleven minutes. I counted every second.

Behind me, the door opened. I didn't turn.

"You're still here," Dominic said quietly.

"Yes."

"How does it feel?"

I pressed my fingertips harder against the railing. "Like I've been living in someone else's body for twenty-three years."

He didn't respond. I heard him move closer, stopping a few feet behind me.

"I want to see the genetic testing," I said. "The full sequencing. Not just the records. I want the lab results. I want to watch them draw my blood and run the tests myself."

"I'll arrange it."

"Tomorrow."

"Understood."

I turned. The sun was behind me now, and his face was shadowed. "Why are you helping me?"

"Because what they did to you is unconscionable."

"That's not an answer."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "I've been watching your work for a long time. Longer than you know. And I've seen what happens to brilliant people when they're surrounded by predators. I have resources. I'm using them."

I studied his face. No tells. No nervous habits. Just stillness.

"I'm not a charity case," I said.

"I know."

"And I'm not being rescued."

"I know that too."

I nodded slowly. Then I turned back to the railing and the light.

---

The medical team arrived the next morning. Three doctors, two lab technicians, portable equipment set up in the suite's second bedroom. They drew blood. Took skin samples. Ran UV exposure tests with calibrated lamps and timers. I sat in a chair and watched every procedure, asking questions, checking their methodology.

The lead doctor was a woman in her fifties. Calm. Precise. She explained each test as she performed it.

"Full genetic sequencing will take seventy-two hours," she said. "But the preliminary UV sensitivity markers are already clear. You don't carry the mutation."

I looked down at my arm. The small bandage where they'd drawn blood. "And my sister?"

"I can't speak to her records without her consent. But based on the files you provided, yes. The mutation is documented under her name in the original lab results."

I nodded. My hands were steady.

Sandra Okafor arrived that afternoon. She was tall, dark-skinned, with silver-framed glasses and a leather briefcase that looked like it cost more than my first car. She sat across from me at the dining table and opened a laptop.

"Let's start with the patents," she said. "How many are currently registered under your name?"

"Four. The Synapse Interface is the primary asset. The others are subsidiary technologies."

"And Chase Bell has access to these?"

"He was listed as a co-inventor on two of them. The marriage gave him legal standing."

Sandra's expression didn't change. "We'll challenge that. Do you have documentation of sole authorship?"

I pulled out my notebook. The battered one I'd kept for five years. I opened it to the technical diagrams, the dated entries, the meticulous record of every iteration and breakthrough.

Sandra studied the pages. Her eyes moved quickly, scanning. Then she looked up.

"This is admissible," she said. "This is very admissible."

"They're going to say I'm unstable," I said. "That I'm a scorned wife making accusations."

"Let them." Sandra closed the laptop. "We'll bury them in documentation. And when we're done, your name will be the only one on those patents."

I pressed my fingertips against the table's edge. "How long?"

"Depends on how hard they fight. But I'm very good at my job, Ms. Carlson. And I don't lose."

She left an hour later. I sat at the table with my notebook open, staring at the diagrams I'd drawn in the dark.

Dominic appeared in the doorway. "Sandra's optimistic."

"She's confident," I corrected. "That's different."

"Fair." He moved into the room and sat across from me. "The Bell family's PR team released a statement this morning. They're positioning Lennon as an emerging inventor. They're calling you a 'troubled individual' who's 'struggling with the end of her marriage.'"

I looked up. "Show me."

He slid his phone across the table. I read the statement twice. The language was careful. Sympathetic. Poison wrapped in concern.

"They're fast," I said.

"They're scared."

I handed the phone back. "Good."

His mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "You're going to win this."

"I know," I said.

And I meant it.
