Chapter 2

The courthouse doors opened and the July heat hit me like a slap. I stopped at the top of the steps with the envelope in my hand. Eight pages inside. Five years inside. My name printed under his, and a line drawn through it by a notary's stamp.

My thumb pressed into the middle of my palm until the nail left a dent. It's a habit. Something I do when I need to keep my face still.

Inside, at window three, Desmond was still signing. I'd watched him walk from our window to the next one. Thirty feet. Thirty seconds. He never looked back.

"Lillian."

Her voice. High and bright, like birthday candles.

I turned. Kaliyah was coming up the steps in a cream dress, tight through the waist, sleeveless. Her hair was lighter than last month, halved and dyed pale. She looked like a stranger wearing my sister's face.

She held something up. A paper. State seal in the corner.

"Look," she said. "It's real. It went through in twenty minutes."

I said nothing.

"Come on." She tilted her head. "Aren't you going to congratulate me?"

My baby turned over, slow and heavy, like he knew something I didn't.

"Kaliyah. Move."

She didn't move. She stepped closer. Close enough that I smelled her perfume, the one Desmond buys me every Christmas. Close enough that her voice dropped into something I'd never heard from her before.

"You were never enough for him." She said it soft, almost gentle, the way you'd tell a child the dog died. "He told me that. He said loving you was like watering a plant that never grew. He said he'd wake up next to you and feel like he was already dead."

I looked at her. Really looked. Under the makeup, under the cream dress, her jaw was tight and her eyes were wet. She was shaking a little, like she'd run here.

And that's when I understood something I should have understood years ago. She wasn't happy. She was terrified. She needed me broken so she could stop being scared.

I turned to walk down.

Her hand closed on my arm. Nails in skin.

Then her other hand came open-palmed across my belly.

The sound was small. Wet. Like a watermelon dropped on tile. It didn't hurt at first. It just moved me. The blow turned my hips and my heel caught the lip of the step, and then there was no step under me at all.

I fell.

Elbow, then hip, then concrete. My hands went out but they went to my stomach, not my head. The world went white at the edges and then narrow. Someone screamed. It took me a second to know it was me.

I lay at the bottom of the courthouse steps with my back against the stone, and something warm spread under my dress, under my thighs, across the concrete, and I thought, no. No, no, no.

"Help." It came out thin. "Someone help me. I'm seven months. Please."

"Desmond!" Kaliyah's voice, from the top of the steps. Loud. For the crowd. "Desmond, I'm cramping. Oh God, I'm cramping. Something's wrong with the baby-"

Then his shoes. Gunmetal grey. Right by my face.

I reached up. I got his pant leg in my hand.

"Desmond-"

He looked down at me. One second. Maybe less. His face didn't do anything. Then he stepped over my arm. My hand came loose and fell back on the concrete.

He lifted her. Carried her down past me, past the blood, tucking her head against his shoulder like a child. The car door shut. The Tesla pulled out and merged into traffic. I watched the plate until I couldn't.

I lay there and pressed my thumb into the middle of my palm.

A woman with a grocery bag knelt next to me. Her hands shook so hard she couldn't dial. I remember thinking, how strange, mine are the steady ones now. I took her wrist. I said nine-one-one. I said it twice, because she wasn't hearing me.

She said the address. She said, "She's pregnant. She's bleeding bad."

The heat came off the pavement in sheets. Above the courthouse door, a small black camera turned slowly. Left to right. Left to right.

The siren started far away and got closer.

In the ambulance somebody held my hand and somebody else cut my dress off. A woman kept saying stay with me, stay with me, and I tried, but the ceiling light kept folding in and out like a fan.

Then a cold room. A mask. Voices reading numbers off a board.

Then nothing.

Then a room that beeped.

The nurse's name was Cora. She came in every twenty minutes to check the pad beneath me and write on a chart. She didn't say congratulations. She didn't say anything at all.

That was how I knew.

I lay there and counted the ceiling tiles. Twenty-eight of them. I counted three times.

My son was seven months and one week. Four pounds, one ounce. He had fingers.

I never got to hold him. They said I was under too far. They said it was better that way.

I didn't cry.

My thumb found the middle of my palm.
