Chapter 3

The ceiling had forty-two tiles. I counted them three times. The third time, the number changed. I blinked, started over. Still forty-two.

The nurse came in. Cora. She checked the pad beneath me and wrote something on a clipboard. She didn't look at my face.

"Someone's been calling," she said. "Every hour. Says he's your husband."

I said nothing.

"He's outside now. Wants to know if he can come in."

I turned my head toward the window. The light was grey. Morning or evening. I couldn't tell.

"Ma'am?"

"Let him in."

She hesitated. Then she left.

I heard his shoes before I saw him. Gunmetal grey. Same ones. He stopped in the doorway holding roses. Red ones. The expensive kind from the shop on Fifth that stays open until midnight.

Kaliyah stood behind him. Her dress was different. Blue this time. Her hand rested on her belly.

Desmond came closer. He set the roses on the table by the bed. They smelled like funerals.

"Lillian." His voice was soft. Careful. Like I was made of glass. "I know you're angry. I know this has been—"

"Hard?" I said.

He stopped.

"Were you going to say hard?"

"I was going to say we can start over. After everything settles. After Kaliyah has the baby. We can—"

"You told me she was assaulted," I said. "At a bar downtown. You said some stranger took advantage of her. That's the story you fed me to justify this circus."

His face went still.

"But we both know the truth, don't we, Desmond?" I looked at him. Really looked. "That baby she's carrying is yours."

The color drained from his face. Started at his forehead and worked down, like someone pulled a plug.

Kaliyah shoved past him. "You don't know what you're talking about. You're on drugs. They have you on—"

"How long?" I asked. My voice was quiet. Steady. "How long were you sleeping with my husband?"

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

"A year," Desmond said. He wasn't looking at either of us. "It's been a year."

The machines beeped. One of them faster now. I pressed my thumb into my palm.

"You lied to me," I said. "You looked me in the eye, seven months pregnant, and you lied."

"Lillian—"

"You left me on the highway. You locked me in the car and drove away."

"I was trying to—"

"You stepped over me." My voice cracked. Just once. "I was bleeding on the courthouse steps, and you stepped over me to carry her."

Kaliyah's face twisted. "He loves me. He chose me. You were never enough for him, Lillian. You were never—"

I ripped the IV out of my arm.

Blood came with it. Bright red. It ran down my wrist and dripped on the sheets. I didn't feel it. I crossed the room. Three steps. Maybe four.

I slapped her.

The sound was enormous. It filled the whole room, the whole hallway, the whole building. Her head snapped to the side. She stumbled back into the doorframe.

Desmond grabbed my shoulders. "Lillian, stop—"

I shoved him off. He hit the wall.

Kaliyah's hand was on her face. Her eyes were wide. Wet. She looked at me like she'd never seen me before.

"You killed my baby," I said.

The words came out flat. Simple. True.

"I didn't—" Her voice was high. Shaking. "I didn't mean—"

"You put your hands on my stomach and you shoved me down the steps."

"It was an accident—"

"The camera saw you."

She stopped. Her mouth hung open.

"The courthouse has cameras," I said. "On every door. Every step. They saw everything."

Desmond's face went grey.

Footsteps in the hallway. Fast ones. Two security guards appeared in the doorway. One of them looked at my arm, at the blood dripping on the floor.

"Ma'am, you need to sit down—"

"They need to leave," I said. I pointed at Desmond. At Kaliyah. "Both of them. Now."

"Lillian, please—" Desmond stepped forward.

"Get out."

The guards moved between us. One of them put a hand on Desmond's chest.

"Sir, I think you should go."

Desmond looked at me. His eyes were red. Wet. He opened his mouth.

"Don't," I said.

He closed it.

Kaliyah was crying now. Loud, messy crying. The kind she used to do when we were kids and she didn't get what she wanted. The guards walked them both out. Their voices faded down the hall.

Cora came back in. She didn't say anything. She just wrapped my arm and helped me back into bed. She replaced the IV. She adjusted the machines.

"You want me to call someone?" she asked.

I thought about my parents. About the apartment in Manhattan. About Kaliyah's bedroom with the big windows and the piano.

"No," I said.

She nodded. She turned off the overhead light on her way out.

I lay there in the dark and pressed my thumb into my palm.

My phone buzzed on the table. Then again. Then again. I reached for it.

Forty-seven missed calls. All from Desmond.

I blocked the number.

The phone went quiet.

I closed my eyes and counted the tiles again. Forty-two. Still forty-two.

Somewhere in the building, my son was in a drawer. Four pounds, one ounce. He had fingers. He had a face.

I would never hold him.

But I would remember. I would remember everything.

And I would make sure they did too.
