Chapter 3

"My brother?" Nathan’s voice cracked, the sound echoing sharply against the bedroom walls.

All the arrogant ease vanished from his posture. He stared at me as if I had just struck him across the face.

"Evan is a vulture, Claire," he snapped, closing the distance between us. "He doesn't care about you. He's taking your case to get back at this family. I will not let him drag my name through the mud because you're throwing a tantrum over a dinner."

"It's not a tantrum," I said, adjusting the strap of my duffel bag. "And Evan is the only person who actually listened to me tonight."

"I will pay for a better lawyer," Nathan insisted, his jaw tight. "I’ll hire the best legal team in the state for you. Anyone but him."

"I don't want your money, Nathan. And I don't want your team."

He studied my face, searching for a crack in my resolve. When he didn't find one, his expression hardened into something cold and unfamiliar.

"Fine. Play games," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "But leave Lily out of this. She doesn't need to be dragged into your petty war."

I didn't answer him. I just walked out the front door.

The next morning, the silence of my city apartment was deafening.

I sat at the small kitchen island with a lukewarm cup of coffee, my laptop open. I needed to update my residential address in Lily's school system. I wanted everything documented properly.

I logged into the Oakridge Academy parent portal and clicked on Lily's profile.

I scrolled past her medical forms and lunch account, heading straight for the emergency contact list. I intended to change my primary phone number.

Instead, my hand froze on the mouse.

There were three names listed under authorized pickups and emergency contacts.

1. Nathan Bennett (Father)

2. Sienna Hale (Aunt/Family Friend)

3. Claire Bennett (Mother)

My chest tightened. I stared at the screen, reading the names over and over until the letters blurred.

Sienna was listed second. I had been bumped to third.

I moved the cursor to the modification history. The system logged every change made to a student's file.

Updated: Yesterday, 9:15 AM.

The morning of our anniversary.

Hours before Nathan slipped that redesigned diamond ring onto my finger and promised me a fresh start, he had already logged into our daughter's school portal. He had already handed Sienna the keys to our family. The yacht trip wasn't a last-minute business development. Sienna’s integration into our lives had been planned.

I didn't call him. I slammed the laptop shut, grabbed my keys, and drove straight back to the house.

Nathan’s car was in the driveway. I unlocked the front door and found him in the kitchen, casually typing on his phone while drinking an espresso.

"You gave her pickup authorization," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet morning.

Nathan looked up, unfazed. He set his phone on the marble counter. "I see you've been checking the school portal."

"You put her before me," I said, stepping into the kitchen. "You gave another woman authorized access to my daughter without asking me."

"I'm busy, Claire," he fired back, his tone laced with irritation. "Sienna's office is five minutes from Oakridge. It makes sense for her to grab Lily if I'm stuck in a meeting."

"I am her mother. I am always available for her."

"You moved out," Nathan reminded me cruelly, crossing his arms. "You decided to pack a bag and leave this house. You don't get to abandon your responsibilities and then complain when someone else steps up to help."

"I left you, Nathan. Not Lily."

"Mom?"

The small, trembling voice came from the hallway.

I whipped around. Lily stood in the doorway, clutching her backpack straps with white knuckles. Her wide eyes darted nervously between Nathan and me.

"I'm sorry," Lily whispered, her lower lip quivering. "I know I went on the boat with Aunt Sienna. I'm sorry if you're mad that I like her."

My heart shattered.

I dropped to my knees right there on the hardwood floor, ignoring Nathan completely. I reached out and pulled Lily into a tight hug.

"Oh, baby, no," I said softly, smoothing her hair back. "I am not mad at you. You haven't done anything wrong."

Lily sniffled, pulling back slightly to look at my face. "But you're fighting about Aunt Sienna picking me up."

"You are allowed to like anyone you want," I told her, making sure my voice was steady and clear of anger. "It is fine to have fun with Aunt Sienna. The problem is that adults have rules they need to follow. When important things change, Mommy and Daddy are supposed to talk to each other first. That didn't happen, and that's what we were discussing. It has nothing to do with you."

Lily’s shoulders instantly dropped. The heavy burden of guilt vanished from her small face. "So you aren't mad at me?"

"Never," I promised, kissing her forehead.

I stood up and looked at Nathan.

Nathan stared at us, his jaw slack. Whatever argument he had been preparing died on his face. His convenient arrangement had just forced our nine-year-old daughter to apologize for loving someone.

I didn't say another word to him. I grabbed the rest of my winter coats from the hall closet and left.

By eight o'clock that evening, the buzzer to my city apartment echoed through the small living room.

I opened the door to find Paige standing in the hallway. She held a bottle of expensive red wine and a hesitant smile.

"Hey," she said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "I figured you could use some company."

I closed the door slowly. "Why are you here, Paige?"

She set the wine on the counter and sighed, adopting her usual peacemaker tone. "Look, Nathan is a mess. He's under a enormous pressure right now. Seven years of marriage shouldn't be thrown away over a dinner reservation. Sienna is just better equipped to help him with this shipping contract."

I crossed my arms, feeling a cold detachment settle over me. "You knew I was sitting at that restaurant waiting for him."

Paige shifted uncomfortably, avoiding my eyes.

"You knew I bought a new dress," I continued. "You helped me pick it out. So why did you get on the yacht?"

"Margaret called me," Paige said quickly, her voice rising in defense. "She said it was a family event and they needed someone to watch Lily while the adults talked business. I didn't want to get caught in the middle of a fight between you and your husband."

"But you did get in the middle," I pointed out.

"I was just trying to help!"

"No, Paige. You made a choice." I looked at the woman I had called my best friend for nearly a decade. "You chose to get on that boat with them. And now you're coming here to tell the person you left behind to keep quiet so things don't get ugly."

Paige’s face flushed red. She grabbed her purse from the counter, her sympathetic act dropping entirely.

"You're being unreasonable," she snapped. "Everyone is just trying to keep the family business afloat. Speaking of which, have you even confirmed the catering menu for this weekend?"

I frowned. "What menu?"

"The launch party," Paige said, rolling her eyes. "For Sienna's father. Margaret is hosting it at Harbor House on Saturday. Don't tell me you forgot to approve the vendors."

The room seemed to tilt.

Harbor House.

My mother’s property. The only thing I actually owned in my own name.

"Right," I managed to say, keeping my face blank. "I'll handle it."

Paige huffed, turning toward the door. "Just think about what you're throwing away, Claire."

She walked out, letting the door click shut behind her.

I immediately pulled out my phone and opened the Bennett company portal. I navigated to the internal events calendar.

There it was. Scheduled for this Saturday.

Hale Shipping Partnership Launch.

Location: Harbor House (Family Venue).

Event Coordinator: Margaret Bennett.

They hadn't asked me. They hadn't even sent me an email. Margaret had simply claimed my mother's home to host a party for the woman destroying my marriage.

My fingers flew across the screen. I took a screenshot of the event details and opened my text messages.

I pasted the image into a new message to Evan.

Can they do this without me? I typed, hitting send.

The three gray dots appeared almost instantly. I watched them dance across the screen, my heart pounding against my ribs.

A moment later, Evan's reply popped up.

The better question is whether you want to keep letting them.
