Chapter 4

Nathan’s text message had been brief. He wanted me at the Bennett family estate for dinner to discuss my questions about Harbor House.

I expected a private conversation. Maybe an argument in his father's old study.

Instead, the housekeeper led me straight into the formal dining room. The heavy oak doors were already open, revealing a scene that made my blood run cold.

It wasn't just Nathan waiting for me.

Margaret sat at the head of the long table, sipping sparkling water. Paige sat near the middle, aggressively avoiding my gaze. Across from her was Sienna, looking composed in a beige silk blouse. And at the very end of the table, my nine-year-old daughter was quietly drawing in a coloring book.

An ambush.

Nathan stood up from his chair as I walked in. He didn't look apologetic. He looked like a CEO ready to close a hostile negotiation.

He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out the redesigned diamond ring I had left at the restaurant. He placed it squarely in the center of my empty placemat.

"Have a seat, Claire," Nathan said, gesturing to the chair. "We need to clear the air."

I didn't sit. I kept my purse on my shoulder and stared at the ring.

"I'm willing to compromise," Nathan announced, his voice carrying easily across the quiet room. "I will remove Sienna from the school pickup list tomorrow morning. Going forward, my assistant will send you my full itinerary so you’re never surprised by a business trip again."

He paused, letting his generous offer hang in the air.

"In exchange," Nathan continued, his tone hardening, "you are going to stop this ridiculous consultation with Evan. And you will allow the Hale Shipping launch party to proceed at Harbor House this weekend."

I looked at the diamond sparkling under the chandelier.

The structure of his so-called truce was clear. I would get basic respect as a mother and a wife, but only if I paid for it by giving the family exactly what they wanted.

"You brought our daughter to a negotiation," I said, my voice dangerously low.

Sienna shifted in her seat, placing a manicured hand on the table. She looked at me with wide, sympathetic eyes.

"Claire, I can step back," Sienna offered softly. "I don't have to attend any more family events if my presence upsets you. But my father has already invited his international partners and the media to Harbor House. If you cancel the venue now, Nathan will look unstable to his investors. He’ll lose millions."

"This isn't about money," Margaret chimed in, setting her crystal glass down with a sharp clink. "This is about family. Lily is terrified of her home breaking apart. You know how much she fears being abandoned again, Claire. You of all people should understand that."

My stomach twisted. Margaret wasn't just crossing a line. She was erasing it completely.

Before I could respond, a small chair scraped loudly against the floorboards.

Lily dropped her crayons. She ran across the room and grabbed my hand, her small fingers wrapping tightly around mine. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears.

"Mom," Lily whispered, her voice trembling. "Are you leaving Dad because I like Aunt Sienna? I promise I won't talk to her anymore. Please don't go."

The room went dead silent.

Nathan looked away. Paige stared intently at her napkin.

A fierce, protective rage ignited in my chest, burning away the last traces of my hesitation. I squeezed Lily’s hand gently and knelt down so I was right at her eye level.

"Listen to me very carefully, Lily," I said, making sure my voice was steady and warm. "My choices have nothing to do with you. You are a wonderful daughter. You are allowed to like anyone you want."

I stood back up, keeping my grip on her small hand. I swept my gaze across the table, locking eyes with Margaret, then Sienna, and finally Nathan.

"Never do that again," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceiling. "Do not ever use my daughter as leverage. If any of you tells her again that my decisions are her fault, every conversation about Lily will happen with the counselor or our lawyers present."

Margaret’s mouth opened in shock, but I didn't give her a chance to speak.

"Sarah," I called out to the nanny waiting in the hallway. "Please take Lily to the media room. Put on a movie."

Sarah hurried in, looking terrified of the tension in the room. She gently guided a sniffling Lily out the door.

I waited until the heavy oak doors clicked shut. The moment the latch caught, the atmosphere in the dining room shattered.

"You are out of line," Margaret snapped, her face flushing red.

"No," I said, finally stepping up to the table. "I am finally drawing a line."

I looked directly at Nathan. He was staring at me, his jaw clenched tight.

"The weekend event at Harbor House is not approved," I told him, keeping my voice level. "The property will not be opened to the Bennett company, and it will certainly not be opened to the Hale family."

Nathan let out a harsh, dismissive laugh. He leaned his hands on the table.

"Is this what Evan told you to do?" Nathan asked, shaking his head. "Drive up the price? Fine. I'll pay you the commercial venue rate. Name your number, Claire. But taking back a house the family has used for five years just to spite me is childish."

"Two years ago, I asked you to sign a formal use agreement for that property," I reminded him. "I wanted the liability on paper."

Nathan frowned, clearly thrown by the pivot. "That was just paperwork. I told you we didn't need it."

"You told me we were family," I corrected. "You told me family didn't need boundaries. But you just proved that being your family doesn't protect me at all. So we are going to rely on my property rights instead."

Nathan stood up straight, his arrogant mask slipping to reveal genuine anger.

"You won't actually embarrass Lily's family in front of everyone," Nathan warned, his voice dropping into a threat. "You won't lock the gates on a multi-million dollar press event."

I didn't argue with him. I didn't try to convince him I was serious.

I pulled my phone from my purse and opened my text thread with Evan.

Draft the formal revocation of use for Harbor House, I typed. Send it to Nathan's legal department first thing tomorrow.

I hit send, dropped the phone back into my bag, and turned toward the door.

"Claire!" Nathan shouted as I walked out.

I ignored him, my heels sinking into the plush hallway runner as I headed for the front entrance. I just needed to get out of this house.

As I stepped into the grand foyer, I nearly collided with a staff member. He was carrying a large, clear archival box toward the front sitting room.

Inside the box, carefully pinned to a velvet display board, was my mother's white cashmere shawl.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

The staff member paused, looking nervous. "Ms. Hale requested it, ma'am. She said it needs to be prepped for the launch party this weekend. It's going to be displayed near the entrance as part of the Bennett family archive."

A Bennett family archive.

Sienna wasn't just wearing my mother's shawl on a yacht. She was turning my mother's legacy into a prop for her own grand entrance into the family.

I reached out and pulled the heavy box directly from the staff member's hands.

"Ma'am, wait—"

"This is my mother's private property," I said sharply, tucking the box under my arm. "It doesn't belong to the Bennetts."

Footsteps echoed on the marble floor behind me. Margaret had followed me out of the dining room. She stood near the archway, her arms crossed tight over her chest.

She looked at the box under my arm, her expression twisting into a mask of cold disgust.

"Are you really going to be this petty, Claire?" Margaret asked, her voice dripping with aristocratic judgment. "Are you really going to calculate every single thing down to a piece of old fabric?"

I adjusted my grip on the box, feeling the weight of the only thing I had left of my mother. I looked at the woman who had just tried to weaponize my child against me.

"Starting now," I said, "yes."

I walked out with my mother's shawl under my arm. The Hale launch was Saturday. By morning, Nathan's legal department would have my formal revocation of use. If he ignored it, he would do so knowing I was no longer willing to protect him from the consequences.
