Chapter 5

The exam room was cold the way those rooms always are. Paper cover on the table. A chart on the wall showing fetal development by week. I had been looking at it for three minutes when Dr. Voss came in.

She was warm and unhurried. She always was. She asked how I was sleeping. I said fine, which was true. She asked about stress levels. I said manageable, which was also true, depending on your definition.

She confirmed what I had suspected for two weeks.

She said it gently, the way doctors do when they're not sure how the news will land. I sat very still and let her finish. Heart rate good. Early days, but everything looked right. She asked about my support system.

I was quiet for a moment.

Not because I didn't have an answer. Because I wanted the answer to be exact.

"The child will carry my surname," I said. "Ward."

Dr. Voss looked at me. Not with pity. With the particular attentiveness of someone recalibrating.

Then she nodded and wrote it in the file.

That was it. No follow-up questions. Just the soft scratch of her pen and the hum of the building around us.

I drove home alone. When I pulled into the parking garage, I turned off the engine and sat there. The concrete was gray. A pipe dripped somewhere in the ceiling. I counted the drips.

Four minutes.

Then I went upstairs.

I called Kayla from the kitchen. She picked up mid-laugh—she'd been in the middle of something—and then she heard my voice and went quiet.

"Talk to me," she said.

So I did. All of it. The appointment, the confirmation, the name I'd already decided. The gala. David. Marcus Webb. The dossier, now fifty-one pages and organized by exhibit. I talked for twelve minutes without stopping. My voice didn't waver once.

Kayla cried. I could hear her trying not to, and then giving up.

"You're the strongest person I've ever known," she said. "I need you to know that."

"I know," I said. "Get some sleep. I need you functional."

She laughed through it. "I love you."

"I know that too."

I hung up. The apartment was still. I put my hand flat on the kitchen counter for a moment, feeling the cool of the surface, and then I went to bed.

---

Two weeks before the gala, I made two calls.

The first was to David's assistant in London. I had worked with her exactly once before, years ago, and she remembered my voice without prompting. I gave her the specific language for the venue coordination: *distinguished guest, global headquarters*. No name. No title beyond that. She repeated it back to me without embellishment and said the arrangements would be handled.

I thanked her.

The second call was less formal.

Marcus Webb was twenty-six, moderately ambitious, and had nineteen thousand Instagram followers he had cultivated with the specific energy of someone who understood that visibility was its own currency. I had watched three of his Lives from previous company events. He was good. Quick instincts. He knew when something was worth capturing.

I ran into him in the elevator at the office. Deliberately.

We talked about nothing for four floors. Then, just before I stepped off, I glanced back.

"The gala's going to be interesting this year," I said. "Different kind of energy. You'll want your phone charged."

He looked at me.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," I said.

The doors closed.

I didn't look back.

---

The night before the gala, I laid out the red gown.

I hung it on the closet door and stood in front of it for a moment. I'd worn it four years ago, the night I gave my first solo board presentation. Twenty-two slides. Forty minutes. Not a single note card. I had stood in front of twelve executives and made the case for a market expansion that everyone else in the room had called premature, and I had been right, and six months later the numbers proved it.

I had come home that night and hung the dress up and thought: now I know.

I knew again now. Just differently.

I sat at the desk and ran through the evidence presentation one final time. Each slide sequenced for maximum impact. The affair messages first—establish the relationship, establish the betrayal. Then the performance reports—my numbers, her name, eight quarters of documented theft. Then the fellowship application timestamps. Then the wire transfers, clean and unambiguous, eight rows in a spreadsheet that told a complete story without requiring a single word of explanation. The ultrasound last.

Not because it was the most damning. Because it was the most human.

Let them sit with that one.

I closed the laptop at ten o'clock.

I brushed my teeth. I turned off the lights. I lay down in the quiet apartment with the city moving softly below the window and I thought about nothing in particular.

I was asleep by ten-fifteen.

I woke at 5:45 AM.

The red dress was still hanging on the door. The dossier was still on the desk. The morning was gray and cold and entirely ordinary.

I made coffee, black, and stood at the window.

Tonight.
