Chapter 4

The invitation arrived on a Tuesday.

Not by email. By hand — cream cardstock, embossed lettering, delivered by a courier in a dark coat who waited at the door while I signed for it. Patricia Harrison did not do anything halfway when the occasion involved an audience.

I set it on the kitchen counter and read it once. Then I propped it against the fruit bowl and went back to my coffee.

She called that evening.

"Lily, darling." Her voice had that particular warmth she deployed when she wanted something. "Did you receive the invitation?"

"It's beautiful, Patricia. The venue is a wonderful choice."

"The Plaza was the only option, really." A small pause — the kind that wasn't actually a pause. "I need you and Greyson there. The whole family, presenting a united front. You understand."

"Of course," I said. "We wouldn't miss it."

After I hung up, I opened my notebook and wrote the date at the top of a fresh page. Then I underlined it once.

Three hundred guests. Wells Enterprises board members. The extended Harrison family. Every person whose opinion Greyson had spent five years carefully managing.

I closed the notebook and went to make dinner.

---

The Sunday dinners at Patricia's were their own kind of performance.

The table was always set the same way — the good china, the low centerpiece, the seating arrangement that put Patricia at the head and Lily at the far end, close enough to be present, far enough to be peripheral. Greyson sat at his mother's right hand. He had been sitting there since he was twelve years old.

This particular Sunday, Patricia waited until the main course was cleared.

She set down her wine glass and looked around the table with the expression she used when she was about to say something she had rehearsed.

"I've been thinking," she said, "about what this family means. What it requires." Her eyes moved slowly around the table — Greyson's aunt, his cousin, his uncle who never said much — and then settled, with the precision of a laser, on me. "A family name only carries as far as the generation that carries it forward. The Harrisons have always understood that. Bloodline isn't sentiment. It's responsibility."

No one spoke. The cousin studied his water glass.

I reached for the wine.

"More Bordeaux, anyone?" I asked.

Greyson's aunt passed her glass. I poured. I smiled at the cousin. I asked Patricia's brother about his golf game in Connecticut, and he answered for six minutes, and by the time he finished, the moment had passed.

Patricia's jaw was tight for the rest of the evening.

In the car on the way home, Greyson stared out the window and said nothing. I watched the city slide past the glass on my side and thought about the date underlined in my notebook.

Three weeks.

---

I went to The Plaza on a Wednesday morning.

The event coordinator was a young woman named Margot, efficient and eager, with a tablet and a clipboard she carried simultaneously. I had called ahead — a routine confirmation, I said, regarding the Wells Enterprises table placement. She met me in the lobby with a handshake and a smile.

The Grand Ballroom was being dressed for a corporate luncheon. Workers moved between tables, adjusting linens. The chandeliers were on at half-power, warm and low.

I walked the room slowly, the way I walked any room I intended to understand completely.

The AV setup was at the head of the room — a projection screen built into the wall above the main table, retractable and clean. The input panel was mounted in a discrete column to the left of the podium. I paused there, asked Margot a question about the table arrangement that required her to check her tablet, and used the twelve seconds to read the input labels.

HDMI. USB-C. Auxiliary.

I looked at the connector on my phone.

USB-C.

I thanked Margot for her time. I told her the table placement was perfect. I said Patricia would be thrilled, which was true in ways Margot did not need to understand.

I was back on the street in nineteen minutes.

I stood on the sidewalk for a moment in the cold morning air. Taxis moved. A woman walked a dog. Somewhere above me, a window opened and closed.

I pulled out my phone and sent Susan Park a single message.

*File it Friday. Hold service until I give the word.*

Her reply came in under two minutes.

*Understood. Everything is ready.*

I put the phone in my coat pocket and started walking.

The gala was in three days.

I had everything I needed. The photographs. The bank records. The screenshots from the burner phone — four years of plans and contempt, clean and timestamped and formatted for a screen.

Patricia wanted the whole family presenting a united front.

I intended to give her exactly that.
