Chapter 5

I built the file on a Thursday night.

The apartment was quiet. Greyson was at a client dinner — or that's what he'd said. I didn't check anymore. I sat at the kitchen table with my phone propped against my water glass and worked through it the way Marcus had taught me to work through a financial report: clean, sequential, no backtracking.

Photographs first. The brownstone in Park Slope. The blue door. Azari's hand on his jaw. The boy with brown curls running across the grass. Greyson's face when he caught him — open, unguarded, nothing like the face he brought home to me.

Then the bank records. Marcus's clean columns. Four years. Every month. Five thousand dollars. Two hundred and thirty-eight thousand, give or take, flowing out of an account Greyson had called our future.

Then the screenshots.

I had organized them by thread, by date, by weight. The logistics first — the account numbers, the transfer instructions, the word extraction in a message from eighteen months ago. Then the planning threads. Then, last, the one I had saved in its own folder.

A Tuesday in March. Two years back.

*She really has no idea, does she? It's almost sad.*

And his reply: *She's a useful ATM with a famous last name. That's all she ever needed to be.*

I ran through the sequence twice. The timing was clean. The images were sharp. On a screen the size of the one I had seen in the Grand Ballroom, they would be visible from every table in the room.

I called Susan at ten-fifteen.

"File it tomorrow morning," I said. "Before noon."

"Everything is ready," she said. "It'll be filed by ten."

I thanked her and hung up.

I sat for a moment in the quiet kitchen. Then I closed the folder, set my phone face-down on the table, and went to bed.

---

In the morning, I made coffee and read the news. At nine-fifty, my phone buzzed with a message from Susan: *Filed. Confirmation attached.*

I looked at it once. Then I set the phone down and finished my coffee.

Across the bedroom, I could hear Greyson in the shower. He was humming something. He did that when he was in a good mood.

I went to get dressed.

---

He was at the mirror adjusting his tie when his phone lit up on the dresser. I caught the preview from across the room without trying.

*Are you sure tonight isn't the right time? I'm tired of waiting.*

Greyson picked up the phone, read it, and typed back quickly. I watched his reflection. His expression was careful, contained — the face of a man managing a situation he believed he had under control.

He set the phone down. *Not yet,* he had typed. I had seen the words before he turned the screen over.

He looked up and found me watching him in the mirror.

"You look beautiful," he said.

"Thank you," I said.

---

In the car, he was different.

Not different enough that anyone else would notice. But I had spent five years learning the specific vocabulary of Greyson Harrison's moods, and I could read it the way I could read a balance sheet — quickly, completely, without needing to be told what I was looking at.

He was attentive. He reached over and straightened my wrap where it had slipped off one shoulder. He told me the gown was perfect. He asked if I was warm enough. Each gesture landed with the practiced ease of a man who had decided, for this particular evening, to be the husband he was supposed to be.

I accepted each one with a smile.

He did not know I had filed for divorce that morning. He did not know that Susan Park had the papers in hand and was waiting for my word to serve them. He did not know that the presentation on my phone — photographs, bank records, four years of messages — was formatted for a screen I had already identified, with a cable I had already confirmed would connect.

He thought tonight was his mother's party.

I let him think that.

---

The Plaza was everything Patricia had intended it to be.

Crystal chandeliers. White roses banked along every surface. Manhattan's skyline pressing against the floor-to-ceiling windows like it had been invited specifically to impress. Three hundred guests moving through the room in their best clothes, holding champagne, performing the version of themselves they reserved for occasions like this.

I moved through it all with my hand light on Greyson's arm.

I spoke to the Wells Enterprises board members — warmly, briefly, with the specific ease of a woman who had grown up in rooms like this one. I greeted Patricia's social circle. I smiled at the Harrison cousins. I accepted a glass of champagne I had no intention of drinking.

Everyone saw exactly what they expected to see. Lily Wells Harrison, composed and gracious, the quiet half of a successful marriage, present and accounted for.

Not one person in that room suspected a thing.

That was exactly what I needed.

I found the AV panel with my eyes before I found my seat. It was where it had been on Wednesday morning — discrete, mounted in the column to the left of the podium.

USB-C.

I sat down. I unfolded my napkin. I placed it in my lap.

Around me, the room filled with light and noise and the careful performance of people who believed the evening was already written.

It was. Just not the version any of them had rehearsed.
