I found it on page forty-seven of the screenshots.

I had been moving through them methodically, folder by folder, the way you move through a spreadsheet — line by line, no skipping, no rushing. The kitchen was quiet. My coffee had gone cold an hour ago.

Azari had sent the message on a Tuesday afternoon in March, two years back. I knew it was a Tuesday because the timestamp said so, and I had learned to trust timestamps over everything else.

*She really has no idea, does she? It's almost sad.*

I read it once. Then I read Greyson's reply.

*She's a useful ATM with a famous last name. That's all she ever needed to be.*

I set the phone down on the table.

I looked at the window. The city was doing what the city always does — moving, indifferent, loud. A cab honked somewhere below. A siren rose and faded.

I picked the phone back up and read it again.

Not because I needed to. I already had it. I just wanted to make sure I felt exactly what I felt, and nothing more.

I felt clear. The way a room feels after you open all the windows.

I saved both messages to a separate folder. I labeled it cleanly, the way Marcus had labeled his tabs. Then I closed the app, set the phone down, and poured my cold coffee into the sink.

I made a fresh cup. I drank it standing at the window.

That was all.

Friday evening, Greyson came home with his overnight bag already half-packed.

"Boston," he said, dropping his keys on the counter. "Client dinner Saturday, brunch Sunday. Back by four."

"I'll help you pack," I said.

I folded his shirts the way he liked them. I tucked his charger into the front pocket. I zipped the bag and handed it to him at the door.

He kissed me on the cheek. "Don't wait up."

"I never do," I said.

I watched the elevator doors close. I stood there for a moment in the quiet of the foyer.

Then I went back inside, sat down on the couch, and counted to forty-five minutes on the clock above the stove.

At the forty-fifth minute, I picked up my phone and called Claire.

She was there in twenty minutes. She let herself in with the key I'd given her years ago and didn't say anything when she saw my face — just set a paper bag on the counter, pulled out two containers of soup she'd clearly grabbed on the way, and sat down across from me at the kitchen table.

I told her everything.

All of it. The receipt in the jacket pocket. The text at two in the morning. The brownstone in Park Slope, the blue door, the woman in the cardigan, the boy with brown curls launching himself into Greyson's arms. The thirty-seven photographs. Marcus Hale and his clean, terrible columns. Two hundred and thirty-eight thousand dollars. The hollowed-out book on the third shelf. The burner phone. Four years of messages.

I told her about the transition plan. The word *extraction*. The photo of me outside our building.

I told her about the laughing emoji.

Claire did not interrupt once. She sat with both hands wrapped around her soup container and she listened the way very few people actually listen — like every word mattered, like she was filing each one away somewhere safe.

When I finished, the soup was cold and the kitchen had gone dark. Neither of us had turned on a light.

Claire was quiet for a moment.

Then she said: "Tell me what you need."

That was it. No *I'm so sorry.* No *I can't believe him.* No *how are you feeling.* Just those five words, steady as a hand on your arm.

I told her.

Monday morning, the three of us sat in a conference room on the forty-second floor of a building in Midtown that had no signage in the lobby.

"Not yet." I folded my hands on the table. "Prepare everything. Have it ready. But hold it until I tell you."

Susan looked at me for a moment. Then she nodded once, the way professionals nod when they understand that the client has a plan they don't need to explain.

She set the papers to the side of her desk.

Claire and I rode the elevator down in silence. On the street, she linked her arm through mine. The city moved around us.

"When?" Claire asked.
