Chapter 3

Jolie Moreno arrived on a Tuesday.

I watched her step through the front door of our townhouse like she was stepping onto a stage. Every detail was perfect — the soft cashmere sweater in a shade of dusty rose, the slight tremor in her lower lip, the way her eyes swept the foyer with a practiced vulnerability that said *I don't belong here, but please, please let me stay.*

She was good. I had to give her that.

'Serena.' Hayes's voice was warm in a way it never was for me. 'This is Jolie.'

She turned to me, and for just a fraction of a second — so brief I almost missed it — something sharp flickered behind those soft brown eyes. Then it was gone, replaced by a trembling, grateful smile.

'It's so kind of you to have me,' she said. Her voice was barely above a whisper. 'I hope I'm not intruding.'

'Not at all.' I smiled back. 'We have plenty of room.'

Hayes's hand went to the small of her back. A guiding touch. Familiar. I kept my eyes on Jolie's face and watched the tiny, satisfied curve at the corner of her mouth.

She thought I didn't see it.

I saw everything.

We had tea in the sitting room. I poured. She accepted her cup with both hands, like something precious, and leaned slightly toward Hayes on the sofa. Their knees were almost touching. I sat across from them and asked about her flight, her plans, whether she preferred honey or sugar.

She chose honey. Of course she did.

'These earrings are beautiful,' I said, nodding toward the delicate gold drops at her ears. 'Antique?'

She touched one self-consciously. 'Oh — yes. A gift. From a long time ago.'

'They suit you perfectly.'

She smiled, pleased despite herself. People always lower their guard when you admire them. It's a reflex.

Then she reached out and touched Hayes's arm. Light. Lingering.

'I'm so sorry,' she said, her eyes drifting to me with that practiced, sorrowful softness. 'It must be difficult. Knowing he loved someone before you.'

The room went very quiet.

Hayes watched me. Waiting. I could feel the weight of his attention like a hand pressed flat against my chest.

I tilted my head and smiled at her — warm, unhurried, completely unbothered. 'Every love has a history,' I said. 'I've never been afraid of the past.'

Something flickered across her face. Not quite frustration. Not quite surprise. She had expected a flinch, a tightening of the jaw, a flash of wounded pride. She got nothing.

I refilled her tea.

'More honey?'

---

The Robinson Foundation charity luncheon was held three days later at a Midtown hotel with too many chandeliers and not enough windows. The kind of room where old money came to remind itself it still existed.

I spent the first hour being gracious. I smiled at the right people, laughed at the right moments, and kept my champagne glass mostly full so no one would think to top it off and slow me down.

I was waiting for Victoria.

I found her near the end of the first course, slipping away from the head table toward the powder room. I gave her thirty seconds, then followed.

The room was small and over-decorated — gilt mirrors, fresh lilies, the faint smell of someone else's perfume. Victoria was at the vanity, pressing a tissue beneath one eye. She saw my reflection and went very still.

I locked the door behind me.

'Serena.' Her voice was careful. Controlled. 'I didn't realize you'd be—'

'I need ten minutes,' I said. 'And I need you to listen.'

She straightened. The pearls at her throat caught the light. 'This is hardly the place—'

'It's exactly the place.' I kept my voice quiet. Even. The way you speak to someone when you want them to understand that you are not angry, you are simply done. 'You've been terrified since Jolie came back. I've watched you at dinner. The way your hand shakes when her name comes up. The way you look at Hayes like you're waiting for something to explode.'

Her jaw tightened.

'You paid her to leave,' I said. 'Years ago. And when you needed someone to blame, you used my family's name.'

The color drained from her face so completely that for a moment I thought she might actually faint. She gripped the edge of the vanity.

'I don't know what you think you—'

'Victoria.' I said her name gently, like a door closing. 'Don't.'

She was quiet.

'My father is in a cell right now because of a story you helped build,' I said. 'My mother can't remember what month it is because of what your son did to protect a lie you started. You sat in this city for three years and watched it happen.' I paused. 'You will help me fix it.'

'And if I refuse?' Her voice was barely a thread.

'Then Hayes finds out whose hands are actually bloody.' I held her gaze in the mirror. 'And I don't think you want that conversation.'

The lilies on the counter smelled too sweet. Somewhere beyond the door, a string quartet was playing something bright and cheerful.

Victoria's hand moved to her pearls. Slowly. Automatically. The gesture of a woman reaching for something solid when the ground shifts beneath her.

'What do you need?' she asked.

I told her.

She didn't argue. She just nodded, her reflection pale and diminished in the gilt mirror, and I thought — not with triumph, not with satisfaction, but with a cold, clear certainty — that the first wall had come down.

I unlocked the door and walked back into the luncheon.

My champagne was exactly where I'd left it.
