Chapter 3

Griffin came to the hospital on the second day.

He brought flowers. White roses. The kind they sell in the gift shop downstairs.

"Sage." He sat on the edge of the bed. His hand covered mine. "I'm so sorry. I should have been here."

I looked at the flowers. The plastic wrap crinkled when he set them on the table.

"Work emergency," he said. "I had my phone off. I didn't see your calls until this morning."

His thumb moved across my knuckles. Gentle. Steady.

"You need to rest," he said. "Don't think about anything. I'll take care of everything."

I nodded.

He kissed my forehead and left.

I watched the door close. Then I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger until the skin went white.

---

They discharged me on Thursday.

Griffin drove me home. He carried my bag. He'd cleaned the kitchen. There was soup on the stove.

"Hadley's at my mother's," he said. "I thought you'd want quiet."

"Thank you," I said.

He made tea. He brought me a blanket. He sat beside me on the couch and put his arm around my shoulders.

"We'll get through this," he said. "Together."

I leaned against him because it was easier than pulling away.

What I didn't know—what I wouldn't know for another six days—was that while I was sitting in that hospital bathroom with my back against the door, Griffin was in his office at Palmer Corporation with a thumb drive and forty-five minutes before security logged the late access.

He'd copied my credentials in February. Just the login. Just in case, he'd told himself. A safety net.

Client databases. Proprietary algorithms. Financial models that had taken my father's team three years to build.

He downloaded it all.

The shell companies were already set up. Lola had done that part. She was good with paperwork. Meticulous. She'd registered them in Delaware under names that sounded like consulting firms.

By the time I came home to soup and tea and Griffin's arm around my shoulders, the data was already moving. The profits were already being funneled.

And I sat there under a blanket and said thank you.

---

On Saturday, Griffin suggested an outing.

"Lola offered to take Hadley to Coney Island," he said. He was making coffee. His back was to me. "Give you a break. Let you rest."

I looked up from my tea. "Lola."

"She feels terrible about everything." He turned, leaned against the counter. Casual. "She wants to help. And Hadley loves her."

I thought about my daughter counting on her fingers. *A lot of times.*

"I don't think—"

"Sage." His voice softened. "You need rest. Real rest. Let me handle this."

I should have said no.

I didn't.

Hadley came downstairs in her yellow sundress with Bun under one arm. She looked at me with those dark eyes—Griffin's eyes—and said, "Can I get a hot dog?"

"You can get a hot dog," I said.

Lola picked her up at ten.

I watched from the window. Lola crouched down to Hadley's level. She adjusted the bow in Hadley's hair. She smiled.

They drove away.

I went back to the couch and pulled the blanket over my knees.

I fell asleep.

---

The call came at 11:47.

Not from Lola. From a number I didn't recognize.

"Mrs. Burke?" A man's voice. Calm. Steady. "This is Cassius Lane. I have Hadley. She's safe."

I was on my feet before I understood I'd stood.

"What—"

"I'm bringing her home now," he said. "She's okay. She's right here with me."

I heard her voice in the background. Small. Tired.

"Mommy?"

"Baby, I'm here," I said. "I'm right here."

Cassius said something I didn't catch. Then: "We'll be there in ten minutes."

I stood in the entryway and waited.

Nine minutes later, headlights swept across the driveway.

I opened the door.

Cassius Lane stood on my front step holding my daughter's hand.

I hadn't seen him in years. Not since before the wedding. He looked the same. Taller than I remembered. Dark hair. Gray eyes. He wore jeans and a jacket and he was looking at me the way you look at someone who's just come out of a burning building.

Hadley's face was streaked with tears. Her sundress had a smear of something dark across the hem. Bun's ear was torn.

I dropped to my knees and she ran into my arms.

I held her. I didn't say anything. I just held her and felt her breathing against my shoulder and smelled the salt air in her hair.

Over her head, I looked at Cassius.

The question in my eyes wasn't *why are you here.*

It was *how long.*

How long have you been watching. How long have you known.

"She's safe," Cassius said quietly.

Then he turned and walked back to his car.

I watched the taillights disappear.

Hadley pulled back and looked at me. Her lip was trembling.

"She left me, Mommy," she whispered. "She said wait here and then she walked away and I couldn't find her and there were so many people and I called her name but she didn't come back."

I cupped her face in my hands.

"You're home now," I said. "You're home and you're safe and I'm never letting that happen again."

She nodded. She buried her face against my shoulder.

I carried her inside and locked the door.

I didn't call Griffin.

I didn't call Lola.

I sat on the couch with Hadley in my lap and Bun between us and I stared at the wall until the sun came up.

And somewhere in those hours, in the dark, the last thread holding me to Griffin Burke snapped clean.
