Chapter 4

I sat on the floor of Hadley's room until the sun came up. She'd fallen asleep in my lap around three. I carried her to bed. Tucked Bun beside her. Smoothed her hair back from her forehead.

Then I sat down with my back against the wall and watched her breathe.

Somewhere around five, my phone buzzed.

Griffin: *Where is Hadley? Lola says she lost track of her at the park. Is she home?*

I stared at the message. Lost track. Like Hadley was a set of keys.

I didn't answer.

Another buzz.

Griffin: *Sage, answer me.*

I turned the phone face down.

When the light turned gray through the curtains, I stood. My knees cracked. I walked downstairs and called my mother.

She answered on the first ring.

"Sage?"

"I need to know everything you haven't told me," I said.

Silence. Long enough that I heard her breathing change.

"About what?"

"About who we are. About where we came from. About why Griffin thought I was worth targeting." My voice was flat. Empty. "Everything, Mom."

Another silence. Then: "Okay. Yes. I'll tell you."

She started with Theodore Sanders.

My grandfather. A man I'd met exactly twice in my entire life—once when I was six, once at my wedding. Both times he'd been polite, distant, formal. I'd thought he was just another of those old-money relatives who showed up out of obligation.

I was wrong.

Celia told me about the empire he'd built. Wall Street. Silicon Valley. International finance. She told me about the fortune she'd walked away from to marry my father. She told me why she'd raised me in quiet comfort instead of dynastic wealth—because she'd wanted me to have a real life. A normal life.

"I thought I was protecting you," she said. Her voice cracked. "I thought if you didn't know, you'd be safe from people who—"

"People like Griffin," I said.

"Yes."

I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. The skin went white.

"Thank you," I said.

I hung up.

I sat at the kitchen table with my phone in my hand and stared at nothing.

Theodore Sanders.

I said the name out loud. It sounded foreign. Like a word from a language I'd never learned.

But it was mine.

And Griffin had never seen it coming.

---

I called Maren Cole at eight.

She was already awake. Maren was always already awake.

"I need a forensic accountant," I said. "The best one you know."

"Jesus, Sage." I heard her moving, probably already pulling files. "What did he do?"

"Everything," I said.

She didn't ask questions. That's why I'd called her.

Two hours later I was sitting in her office. The accountant's name was Richard Chen. He had gray hair and reading glasses on a chain and he looked like somebody's grandfather.

He was not somebody's grandfather.

He was a forensic accountant who'd taken down three hedge fund managers and a senator.

"I'll need access to everything," he said. "Bank statements. Tax returns. Business filings. If he bought a coffee with a credit card, I want to see it."

"You'll have it," I said.

Maren leaned forward. "Sage. Are you sure? Once we start this, there's no going back."

I looked at her. "I'm sure."

---

Two weeks later, Richard called me back to Maren's office.

He spread documents across the conference table. Printouts. Spreadsheets. Highlighted sections in yellow and pink.

"Shell companies," he said. He tapped one page. "Registered in Delaware. Three of them. All in the last eight months."

He pulled another sheet forward.

"Proprietary files from Palmer Corporation. Downloaded March eighteenth. That's four days after your miscarriage."

My hands went still in my lap.

"He used your credentials," Richard continued. "Logged in remotely. Forty-five minutes. He copied client databases, financial models, algorithms your father's team spent three years developing."

Maren's jaw was tight. "Where did it go?"

"The shell companies. Then out to offshore accounts. Some of it's been liquidated already. Funneled into joint accounts with Lola Mendoza." Richard looked at me over his glasses. "He didn't just cheat on you, Mrs. Burke. He robbed your family."

I stared at the papers.

Numbers. Dates. Transactions.

Evidence.

Proof.

"Good," I said quietly.

Maren blinked. "Good?"

I looked up at her. "Now I know exactly what I have."

---

That afternoon, a delivery arrived at the house.

Flowers. Bright yellow and orange. Sunflowers and daisies. Hadley's favorites.

The card said: *To the bravest girl I know. —C*

Hadley held the card up to the light. "Who's C?"

"A friend," I said.

She smiled and carried the flowers to her room.

My phone buzzed.

Cassius: *How is she?*

I stared at the message. Three words. No pressure. No expectation.

I typed: *Safe. Thank you.*

His reply came a minute later.

Cassius: *Good.*

That was all.

I sat down on the couch and looked at the screen until it went dark.

---

A week later, Maren called.

"I need you to come in. We're finalizing the filing strategy. I want you to meet with the corporate attorney handling the theft case."

"When?"

"Tomorrow. Ten a.m."

I hesitated. "Griffin knows your office. If he sees me there—"

"Bring someone," Maren said. "Someone he won't recognize. Someone who'll sit beside you and make him think twice."

I hung up.

I stared at my phone.

Then I opened my messages and typed.

Sage: *Are you free tomorrow morning?*

Cassius: *Yes.*

Sage: *I need a favor.*

Cassius: *Name it.*

---

He arrived at nine-fifty.

I was waiting in the parking garage. He pulled up in a black sedan. No flash. No performance.

He got out and walked over. Jeans. Dark jacket. Gray eyes that looked at me the way they had on my front step—like I'd just come out of a burning building.

"Thank you for this," I said.

"You don't have to thank me," he said quietly.

We walked into the building together.

In the elevator, he stood beside me and said nothing. I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. He noticed. I saw his eyes flick down, then away.

He didn't ask.

The meeting lasted an hour. I sat at a long table with Maren, Richard, and two corporate attorneys. Cassius sat beside me. He didn't speak. He just sat there, steady and still, while they walked me through timelines and evidence and filing strategies.

When it was over, he drove me home.

The car was silent. I stared out the window and pressed my thumbnail into my finger until the skin went red.

He pulled into my driveway and put the car in park.

"Sage," he said.

I looked at him.

"You're going to be okay," he said.

I wanted to believe him.

I nodded.

He waited until I was inside before he drove away.

I locked the door and leaned against it.

My phone buzzed.

Griffin: *We need to talk.*

I deleted the message.

Then I walked upstairs and checked on Hadley.

She was asleep. Bun tucked under her chin. The flowers from Cassius on her nightstand.

I sat down on the floor beside her bed.

And for the first time in weeks, I felt something other than empty.

I felt ready.
