Chapter 4

Monday morning I ran the leadership standup like nothing had happened. I gave clean numbers on the Q3 rollout, I fielded a hard question from Finance without blinking, and when Alessandro asked me to stay behind for our one-on-one, I sat across from him with my hands folded and my voice level.

"You're sharp today," he said. "Sharper than usual."

"I'm always sharp."

He studied me for a second longer than the comment warranted. Alessandro didn't miss things. He just chose, most of the time, not to say what he saw. "Your calendar's clear this week," he said instead. "I moved the Denver call to Thursday. Figured you could use the room."

"Thank you." I didn't ask him why he thought I'd need it. I filed it away the way I filed everything now — a fact, not a comfort.

Back at my desk, I opened the budget spreadsheet I kept for the department, the one everyone on my team had seen a hundred times, color-coded and clean. Then I opened the second file underneath it, the one with a password that wasn't my anniversary and wasn't Waffles' name and wasn't anything Dario could guess in a hundred years. Evidence Log. Columns for date, description, file path, legal notation — the last one straight from Maggie's texts, phrases like admissible, corroborating, chain of custody intact. I added a line for the credit card statement. I added a line for the photograph of my hand.

My jaw ached by lunchtime. I hadn't noticed I'd been clenching it.

Maggie called Wednesday at 2:14 p.m. I closed my office door before I picked up.

"I've got three things," she said, no hello, the way she always started when the news was heavy. "Idaho county marriage license, dated six years ago. Dario Weaver and Camryn Cruz. Birth certificate for Elyse Camryn Weaver, father listed as Dario Weaver, born five years ago. And pharmacy records."

"Pharmacy records for what."

"Contraceptive prescription. Filled monthly, three years running. Under Dario's name." A pause, the kind Maggie only took when she already knew what the words would do to me. "Milena, the pickup dates. I lined them up against what you told me about your morning routine. The smoothies. They match. Every single month."

I didn't say anything. Through my office window I could see the bullpen, people typing, someone laughing at something on a screen, the whole ordinary machine of my life running exactly the way it always had.

"Milena."

"I heard you."

"I'm sending the full report tonight. I'll leave it in your desk drawer myself, after everyone clears out. You don't read it here. You read it somewhere you can fall apart if you need to."

"I don't fall apart," I said, and we both knew it wasn't true, and neither of us said so.

The office emptied by seven. Maggie's envelope was in my locked drawer exactly where she said it would be, thick, unmarked, taped shut like evidence because it was. I sat at my desk under the one lamp still burning on the floor and opened it.

The marriage license first. Camryn Cruz, Dario Weaver, a chapel in a town I'd never heard of, six years ago — a year before he ever walked me to my car in the rain. The birth certificate next. Elyse Camryn Weaver. Father: Dario Weaver. Five years old. I did the math without wanting to. She'd been born the same spring Dario told me he wanted to "really build something" with me.

The insurance policy. Three million dollars, accidental death, my name as the insured, a signature at the bottom that was almost mine — almost, in the way a forgery always almost gets it right, the loop on the M just a fraction too careful.

I read the pharmacy record last.

I don't know why I saved it. Maybe because some part of me already understood it would be the one that broke something open in me that the marriage license hadn't.

I thought about the clinic on Fifth Avenue, the paper gown, the doctor's careful, kind voice telling me nothing was wrong that they could find. I thought about the bathroom stall at my own sister's baby shower, sitting on the closed lid crying into my hands while music thumped through the wall, and Dario's voice outside the door — just give it time, Mil, it'll happen — his hand flat against the wood like he was holding the whole thing together for me.

He'd been crushing pills into my smoothie that whole year. Every morning. While he held my hand in waiting rooms and signed insurance forms with someone else's future in mind.

I didn't cry. I want to be clear about that, even to myself. I sat very still until the lamp buzzed too loud in the silence, and then I closed the folder, squared the edges, and locked it back in the drawer.

I drove home the long way, past the water, past the lit-up ferry terminal, and by the time I pulled into the garage I already knew what I was going to make. Chicken, the way he liked it, with the rosemary from the little pot on the windowsill.

I walked in, hung up my coat, and called out, my voice warm, easy, exactly right.

"Dario? I'm making dinner."
