Chapter 3

I didn't sleep that night. I worked instead.

Diana called me back at 6 a.m. Her voice was brisk, no small talk. "Send me everything you have. I'll have papers drafted by noon."

"I want the accounts frozen first," I said. "Before he wakes up."

"Joint accounts freeze the second we file for divorce. But if you want to move faster than that—" she paused. "There's a way. Not pretty, but legal."

"Do it."

By nine, I'd signed a form putting a hold on every joint account we shared. By ten, I was sitting at my kitchen table with Ethan's laptop open, listing his suits on a consignment app. The gray Tom Ford. The navy Brioni he wore to his cousin's wedding. Eleven pairs of shoes. I priced them fair. I wasn't trying to cheat him. I just wanted it gone.

I called the insurance company next. Cancelled the supplemental plan we'd added two years ago, the one that covered private rooms and out-of-network specialists. Base coverage only now. Let the hospital bill him like anyone else.

Then I called our landlord, a soft-spoken man named Mr. Alvarez who liked to talk about his grandkids. "I need to renew early," I told him. "Just my name this time."

"Everything all right, Mrs. Thomas?"

"It will be," I said.

By the time I drove back to Harborview, the sky had cleared into that flat gray Seattle does so well, like the world couldn't decide whether to cry or not. I carried a manila envelope instead of flowers.

Ethan was awake when I walked in. Sitting up a little, IV in his arm, color back in his face. He smiled when he saw me — that warm, practiced smile I used to love.

"Grace." His voice cracked with relief. "God, I was so scared. Did they tell you what happened? The other car—"

I sat down. Set the envelope on my lap. Didn't open it yet.

"I know about Nylah," I said. "I know about the tribute payments. Eighty-five thousand dollars, Ethan. I know about the collar."

His face didn't move for a second. Then it did everything at once.

"Grace, whatever you think you saw—"

"I saw all of it. Every video. Every transfer." I kept my voice even. "I've already frozen our accounts. I cancelled your supplemental insurance this morning, so I hope you like the food here, because you're paying for the room now. I'm also the only name on our lease as of eleven a.m."

He stared at me. "You did what?"

"You heard me."

"You can't just—" He struggled to sit up straighter, wincing. "That's our money. Our home."

"It was."

His face crumpled into something almost convincing. "Grace, please. I love you. Whatever happened with Nylah, it wasn't— it didn't mean anything. It was stress, it was—"

"Save it," I said quietly. "I'm not here for an apology."

His eyes hardened, fast, like a door slamming. "You think you can just destroy me? I'll tell everyone you're unstable. I'll tell them the IVF broke something in you. People will believe me, Grace. Everyone loves me."

I almost laughed. Almost.

"Try it," I said.

I opened the envelope and slid the papers onto the blanket over his legs. Divorce petition, already filed. Then I reached into my coat pocket and placed a single printed photo on top of the stack. Him. On his knees. Collar around his throat. The caption he'd typed himself, still visible in the corner of the screenshot: *Yes. I'm your dog.*

He went white.

"Your threats have been noted," I said, standing. "I hope your recovery goes well."

I walked out without looking back. Behind me, I heard him say my name once, then again, louder, but I didn't stop. The elevator doors closed on the sound of it.

He called me four times that afternoon. I watched the screen light up each time and let it ring out. Then the texts started.

*Grace please. I'm your husband. We can fix this.*

Twenty minutes later: *You're being cruel. I almost died and this is what you do.*

An hour after that: *You'll regret this. I still have friends. People who know the real you.*

I didn't answer any of them. I made coffee instead, my hands steady, the kitchen quiet except for the kettle.

Later, Diana texted me a small victory: Ethan's assistant had called the bank trying to unfreeze a line of credit. Denied. He'd tried again through a different branch. Denied again. Every door I'd shut, he found already shut when he reached for it.

I heard, secondhand, that he called three mutual friends that evening, spinning a story about my "breakdown," my "paranoia." One of them, a woman named Priya from our old book club, texted me instead of believing him. *He sounds unhinged, are you okay?*

I was more than okay.

I heard he tried Nylah too. Called her six times. Straight to voicemail every time, the automated voice cheerful and indifferent.

He was alone in that hospital bed, in a room he could no longer afford, with a phone full of unanswered calls and a wife who wasn't coming back.

Outside my window, the rain started again, soft against the glass. I sat with my coffee and let myself feel, for just a moment, something almost like peace.
